Summary: By designing and synthesizing endo-functionalized macrocyclic hosts with buried salt bridges, selective recognition of specific compounds can be achieved in water, which can be used for optical chirality sensing and fluorescent sensing. This demonstrates the effective use of buried salt bridges in molecular recognition in water.

Summary: Cleft type receptors with the oxyanion hole motif were synthesized straightforwardly from commercial starting materials. These receptors showed the ability to adjust to different guests by combining hydrogen bonds and charge-transfer interactions, leading to further stabilization of the complexes. Modeling studies and bidimensional NMR experiments were conducted to provide additional information on these complexes.

Summary: Here, we present a decarboxylative Minisci hetero-arylation study at the bridge positions. Through a simple and photocatalyst-free process, free bridge carboxylic acids are directly coupled with nonprefunctionalized heteroarenes to yield polysubstituted BCP and oBCH derivatives in high yields. Furthermore, the impact of the BCP core on the physicochemical properties of a representative example compared to its all-aromatic ortho- and meta-substituted analogues is evaluated.

Summary: Novel cinchona alkaloid derived iodide catalysts were developed for the enantioselective oxidative alpha-amination of 2-oxindoles, providing various functionalized spiropyrrolidine oxindoles in high yields and with good enantioselectivities. This iodide/ROOH catalytic system features a one-step synthesis of a catalyst with multiple functionalities, ease of operation, and good scalability, thereby enriching the repertoire of iodide catalysis for enantioselective oxidative coupling reactions.

Summary: A series of platinum(II) calix[4]arene-based molecular tweezers were synthesized, and their host-guest association with a charge-neutral cyclometalated platinum(II) complex was studied. The experiments showed that changing the solvent composition could control the assembly process, resulting in the formation of high-ordered host-guest oligomers. The change in assembly behaviors could be detected through drastic color changes.

Summary: The development of polymer-dendrimer composite membranes with different generations of dendrimers showed promising results for efficient separation of CO2 gas. The third generation dendrimer-based composite membrane demonstrated optimal CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity, approaching the Robeson trade boundary curve. Experimental studies confirmed the superior performance and long-term stability of the membrane.

Summary: A dynamic spacer installation (DSI) strategy was used to construct a series of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for ethane/ethylene separation, with increased ethane adsorption capacity and enhanced ethane/ethylene selectivity. The DSI approach showed promising results for the rational design of multifunctional MOFs in challenging tasks.

Summary: This study evaluates the production of medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCA) from wasted wine lees. Factors such as pH, feeding mode, organic loading rate, and in-line extraction of acids were analyzed. The results showed that the continuous operation with gradually increasing organic loading rate yielded the highest MCCA production rate.

Summary: A dual C-F bond cleavage of alpha-CF3-ortho-hydroxystyrenes triggered by alkyl radicals was developed for the synthesis of 2-fluorobenzo-furans. The visible-light-induced defluorinative cross-coupling reactions of alpha-CF3-ortho-hydroxystyrenes with various carboxylic acids produced gem-difluoroalkenes, which underwent SNV-type 5-endo-trig cyclization to give 2-fluorobenzo-furans. Mechanistic studies revealed that electron transfer between phenoxyl radicals and carboxylates was the main pathway for alkyl radical generation.

Summary: Equipping DNA with hydrophobic anchors enables targeted interaction with lipid bilayers for various applications. Through experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, the study reveals the complex structure and energetics of hydrophobically tagged DNA within lipid membranes. Fundamental insight gained on DNA-bilayer interactions will guide the rational design of membrane-targeting nanostructures.

Summary: A method for preparing alpha-chiral carboxylic acid derivatives, including those with all-carbon quaternary centers, was reported through an enantioselective CuH-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of allenes with a commercially available fluoroformate. Various heterocycles and functional groups on the allenes were tolerated, resulting in enantioenriched alpha-quaternary and tertiary carboxylic acid derivatives with good yields and exclusive branched regioselectivity. The synthetic utility of this approach was further demonstrated by derivatization of the products to obtain biologically important compounds, such as the antiplatelet drug indobufen.

Summary: Enantiospecific biorecognition interactions play a key role in biological events, with bio-affinity values often higher than predicted. This study presents the first direct measurement of interaction forces between chiral peptides, showing a force difference of 70 pN between same and opposite enantiomer interactions. Spin dependency and fast decay of the interaction term suggest the importance of spin and exchange interactions in biological processes.
