Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether ultrasonographic measurements of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) could serve as a noninvasive marker for intracranial hypotension (IH). The results showed a strong correlation between ONSD and ICP, suggesting that ultrasonographic ONSD may be a valuable technology for evaluating IH.

Summary: Measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) by point-of-care ultrasound is associated with increased disease severity, brain imaging abnormalities, and increased death by 3 months in tuberculous meningitis (TBM) patients. Higher baseline ONSD values are correlated with more severe disease and abnormal brain imaging.ONSD ultrasound has a potential role as a noninvasive, affordable bedside tool for predicting brain pathology and death in TBM.

Summary: ONDS ultrasound is increasingly popular for estimating raised ICP, with high diagnostic accuracy compared to invasive methods. However, it is not yet a complete replacement for invasive techniques.

Summary: Ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) demonstrates high diagnostic accuracy for increased intracranial pressure (IICP), with both high sensitivity and specificity. Larger cut-off values significantly increase specificity without compromising sensitivity. Ultrasonographic ONSD can serve as a screening tool for IICP, providing an estimate of when invasive methods are needed.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of suspension direct laryngoscopy on intracranial pressure by measuring optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) using ultrasound. The results showed a significant increase in ONSD during the insertion and removal of the laryngeal blade. This is the first study to suggest that measuring ONSD during suspension direct laryngoscopy raises intracranial pressure.

Summary: This study explored the predictive value of ultrasound measurement of the diameter of the optic nerve sheath for intracranial hypertension after craniotomy using 108 patients with intracranial pressure monitoring catheters. The results showed that the optic nerve sheath diameter was significantly higher in the severely elevated intracranial pressure group compared to other groups. The ultrasound examination of the optic nerve sheath diameter is a noninvasive, reliable, simple, and easy to master technology worthy of clinical application and promotion.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of dexmedetomidine on intracranial pressure in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery in a Trendelenburg position. The results showed that dexmedetomidine effectively decreased intracranial pressure, improved brain oxygen metabolism, and reduced the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions.

Summary: Ultrasonographic optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement is an accurate and portable method for detecting raised intracranial pressure. This study found that the mean ONSD in healthy Black South African adults was significantly higher than that in a Canadian adult population. Age, gender, and co-morbidities were not found to significantly correlate with ONSD.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of ultrasonic optic disc height (ODH) and optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) for elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). The results showed a positive correlation between ODH and ICP. Combining ODH and ONSD provided a more accurate assessment of ICP.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the optic nerve's elastic properties and optic nerve sheath diameter in patients with IIH compared to healthy individuals using shear-wave elastography. The results showed that patients with IIH had higher optic nerve stiffness and larger optic nerve sheath diameter than healthy volunteers. However, there was no correlation between disease duration and SWE-based stiffness measurement of the optic nerve.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between ultrasound parameters and intracranial pressure (ICP) and determine the best noninvasive estimator of ICP in patients after hemicraniectomy. The results showed that optic nerve sheath diameter including the dura mater (ONSDI), ONSDI-OND (the difference between ONSDI and optic nerve diameter), and ONSDI/ETD (the ratio of ONSDI to eyeball transverse diameter) were positively associated with ICP, while width of the crural cistern (WCC) was negatively associated with ICP. WCC had the highest predictive power for increased ICP, and the combination of ONSDI-OND and WCC was a satisfactory predictor of increased ICP.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the use of optic nerve ultrasound evaluation to detect intracranial pressure changes during surgical procedures, and discusses the limitations of the B-scan technique. The results show that ocular ultrasonography is a valuable diagnostic tool in the surgical setting for indirectly assessing intracranial pressure.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) can be used for dynamic monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP). The results showed a strong correlation between ONSD and ICP values in the supine position, with both decreasing when patients changed to a head-up position. However, the change in ICP was not strongly correlated with the change in ONSD. In the dynamic test, only a small percentage of patients showed agreement between ICP and ONSD, while others had different profiles.

Summary: During transoral robot-assisted thyroidectomy, the post-CO2 inflation mean optic nerve sheath diameter was higher than the pre-induction diameter, but returned to baseline after CO2 deflation in most cases. Only one participant showed sustained increased optic nerve sheath diameter associated with severe new-onset postoperative headache. The transient elevation in intracranial pressure during low-pressure CO2 neck insufflation did not appear to adversely affect patients.
