Summary: This study identified 10 differentially expressed piRNAs in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), among which piR-hsa-211106 was downregulated in LUAD tissues and cell lines. Functional analyses demonstrated that piR-hsa-211106 inhibited LUAD cell proliferation, tumor growth, and migration, while promoting apoptosis, by targeting pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and enhancing chemotherapy sensitivity. These findings suggest that piR-hsa-211106 could serve as a novel diagnostic and therapeutic target for LUAD.

Summary: We investigated the effects of different lipids on the activity of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R). The results showed that cells preincubated with Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) exhibited reduced calcium release triggered by angiotensin II, but further analysis revealed that this observation might be an artifact. Incubation with VLDL also decreased intracellular fura-2 levels and the maximal obtainable ratio of calcium ions in cells. These findings questioned the initial results and emphasized the importance of careful interpretation in fura-2 measurements.

Summary: Mitochondria are crucial for cellular physiology as they generate energy and regulate biological functions. Dysregulation of mitochondrial function is associated with various pathologies, including cancer. The mitochondrial glucocorticoid receptor (mtGR) plays a role in regulating mitochondrial transcription, metabolism, energy production, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. The interaction between mtGR and pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), a key player in cancer metabolism, suggests the involvement of mtGR in cancer development. In this study, using a xenograft mouse model, overexpression of mtGR in hepatocarcinoma cells was found to promote tumor growth, reduce OXPHOS biosynthesis and PDH activity, and alter glucose metabolism, similar to the Warburg effect. Autophagy activation in mtGR-associated tumors further supports tumor progression. Increased mitochondrial localization of mtGR is suggested to contribute to tumor progression via mtGR/PDH interaction, suppressing PDH activity and modulating mtGR-induced mitochondrial transcription, favoring glycolytic energy production in cancer cells.

Summary: This study investigated the potential therapeutic interventions of DIM in TNBC and its metabolic reprogramming in enhancing the efficacy of CC. The results showed that DIM induced metabolic catastrophe in TNBC cells by regulating aerobic glycolysis and intermediate metabolism. The combination of DIM and CC significantly inhibited TNBC tumor growth and downregulated key aerobic glycolysis mediators. These findings suggest that DIM can be developed as an adjuvant therapy for treating metabolically dysregulated TNBC.

Summary: Green-stained amniotic fluid, also known as meconium-stained amniotic fluid, is a common obstetric hazard. It can be caused by the passage of fetal colonic content or intraamniotic bleeding. Birth with green-stained amniotic fluid is associated with fetal acidemia and potential complications like respiratory distress and seizures. Infection/inflammation inside the amniotic fluid plays a role in the development of meconium-stained amniotic fluid and can lead to clinical chorioamnionitis and neonatal sepsis.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of vaginal progesterone for preventing preterm birth and adverse perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies. The results showed that vaginal progesterone did not prevent preterm birth or improve perinatal outcomes in unselected twin pregnancies. However, it appeared to reduce the risk of preterm birth and neonatal morbidity and mortality in twin pregnancies with a sonographic short cervix.

Summary: The existence of a microbiota in the human placenta is still debated. Recent DNA sequencing investigations reported the presence of a microbiota in typical human term placentas, but it could be background DNA or contamination. Re-analysis of publicly available 16S rRNA gene datasets showed that Lactobacillus, a vaginal bacterium, was highly abundant in placentas but disappeared after applying DNA contaminant removal. Furthermore, bacterial profiles of placental samples clustered primarily by study origin and mode of delivery, suggesting that placentas delivered at term are unlikely to be the original source of observed bacterial DNA signals.

Summary: In this study, the plasma proteome of pregnant and non-pregnant COVID-19 patients and controls was characterized. The findings revealed shared and pregnancy-specific proteomic changes in COVID-19 patients compared to controls, and the plasma proteome accurately identifies COVID-19 patients, even when they are asymptomatic. This study provides insight into the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and explains the more severe outcomes observed in pregnant women.
