Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been increasingly used in routine clinical laboratories during the last two decades. The high specificity, sensitivity, and multi-analyte potential make it an ideal alternative to immunoassays or conventional high-performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC). It also provides higher throughput than gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). LC-MS/MS also offers higher flexibility than immunoassays because LC-MS/MS assays are typically developed in-house. In addition, abundant information can be obtained from a single LC-MS/MS run which can produce a large amount of quantitative or qualitative data. In this review, typical LC-MS/MS clinical applications are presented, personal experiences are shared, and strengths and weakness are discussed. It is foreseeable that LC-MS/MS will become a key instrument in routine clinical laboratories.

Degradation of acesulfame in UV/monochloramine process: Kinetics, transformation pathways and toxicity assessment

Chi-Hang Chow, Japhet Cheuk-Fung Law, Kelvin Sze-Yin Leung

Summary: UV/NH2Cl is an emerging advanced oxidation process for micropollutant removal, generating reactive chlorine species (RCS) and hydroxyl radicals. Transformation products of ACE treated with UV/NH2Cl were found to be more toxic, attributed to the chlorinated transformation products and specifically halo-alcohols. The study provides insight into the role of reactive species and potential risks in using UV/NH2Cl for micropollutant removal in water treatment.

The crucial role of heavy metals on the interaction of engineered nanoparticles with polystyrene microplastics

Wai-Kit Ho, Kelvin Sze-Yin Leung

Summary: This study investigated the uptake and release of nanoceria by various polystyrene MPs, showing that in the presence of heavy metals, the sorption affinity of PSMPs for CeNPs was substantially enhanced. The formation of PSMP-HM-CeNP complexes was responsible for this enhanced affinity, highlighting the crucial role of MPs in the transfer of engineered nanoparticles in aquatic environments.

Summary: An integrated analytical approach using ICP-MS and ultrafiltration was developed to successfully separate and characterize ionic Ce and CeO2 NPs, with enzymatic pretreatment found to be more efficient than alkaline pretreatment. The properties/states of all Ce species were well preserved, and the recovery rates of both species were over 85%.

Sorption Behavior, Speciation, and Toxicity of Microplastic-Bound Chromium in Multisolute Systems

Wai-Kit Ho, Japhet Cheuk-Fung Law, Jason Cho-Wai Lo, Isaac Kai-Xin Chng, Catherine Hong-Huan Hor, Kelvin Sze-Yin Leung

Summary: The high affinity of microplastics (MPs) for heavy metals has attracted attention. This study investigated the role of benzophenone-type UV filters on the sorption, oxidation state, and toxicity of chromium (Cr) by polystyrene MPs (PSMPs). Results showed that Cr uptake by PSMPs increased significantly with the presence of UV filters, leading to altered oxidation state and increased toxicity. This study provides evidence on the effects of coexisting constituents on the oxidation states and toxicities of MP-bound heavy metals.

Interactions between cerium dioxide nanoparticles and arsenite change their biological fate in the gastrointestinal tract of mice

Yingyan Huang, Judy Tsz-Shan Lum, Wai-Kit Ho, Kelvin Sze-Yin Leung

Summary: This study investigated the impact of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and heavy metals on human health using in vitro and mouse models. The results showed that ENPs decreased the bioaccessibility of heavy metals during the digestive process and increased their bioaccumulation in organs. The size of the nanoparticles and redox reactions on their surface could enhance the toxic effects. This study provides the first step in understanding the effects of ENPs and heavy metals on mammalian health in the environment.
