Summary: Honey is highly valued for its beneficial properties, but it is also susceptible to counterfeiting. Analytical methods are being developed to verify its origin and authenticity using trace- and ultra-trace elements. Lanthanides have been found to be particularly useful for tracing the link between honey and the soil it originates from. The study used ICP-MS and ICP-OES analysis to investigate the traceability of 17 different honey chains, and found that while the soil fingerprint remains unchanged, there is slight fractionation of heavier lanthanides from flowers to honey.

Summary: The elemental composition of organic, conventional, and homemade Romanian wines varies across regions and wine types. Conventional wines have higher levels of Ca, K, Fe, and Al, while homemade wines have higher levels of Na, Mg, V, Ba, and Rb. Trace elements and heavy metals in rose wine samples are below the admissible limit. Daily intake of wine provides less than 0.5% of the tolerable daily intake of analyzed elements, posing no health concerns. All wine samples are safe for consumption, regardless of the production system.

Summary: A method using ICP-MS was developed and validated to analyze the elemental composition of urucum seeds. It was found that elements such as Ca, Mg, and K were present in higher levels, while elements like Al, Ba, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Zn were present in lower concentrations. Statistical analysis revealed correlations between certain elements and the uneven distribution of Mo in the samples, potentially caused by soil treatment. This study provides useful information for future research on nutritional composition and farming procedures.

Summary: Rare earth elements (REEs) have diverse applications in energy, medicine, and technology. The economic viability of extracting REEs from domestic feedstock, such as coal, is being explored due to increasing global demand and limited supplies. This study investigated the release of water-soluble REEs and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from subbituminous coal through photodissolution under simulated sunlight exposures. The findings indicate that photodissolution is a significant process influenced by solar intensity and exposure time, which may have positive or negative implications for the environmental impact of REEs.

Summary: Drying rice in a silo-dryer-aerator using single-layer loading at low temperatures resulted in uniform drying. This study evaluated the physical, physicochemical, and morphological quality of rice grain cultivars in the lower and upper layers of the silo-dryer-aerator. The results showed that drying rice in silo-dryer-aerator attenuated the moisture diffusivity in the grains and preserved the physicochemical constituents and morphology of starch, especially in the lower layers throughout the 2-month drying. The Guri INTA and BRS Pampeira cultivars exhibited the highest resistance to drying and had the most uniform final quality.

Summary: In this work, a portable analytical system based on point discharge chemical vapor generation atomic emission spectrometry (PD-CVG-AES) coupling with gold filament enrichment was designed. The highly sensitive analysis of Hg2+ indirectly realized the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The measurement is based on the fact that Ag+ can decrease the concentration of Hg2+ by forming Ag-Hg amalgam in the presence of the reductant SnCl2, while AA can pre-reduce Ag+ to Ag0, leading to the generation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The developed novel analytical strategy broadens the application of microplasma-based AES and offers a higher level of sensitivity compared to current AA detection techniques.
