The goal of this study was to determine the symptoms and microscopic damage caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis, a fluoride-sensitive species. The plants were exposed to simulated fog with fluoride (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1) for 20 min daily during four consecutive days. Samples from leaflets without any apparent fluoride injury were collected to microscopic analysis. The percentage of necrosed leaf area was measured, and the level of pollutant in the dry matter from the basal and apical portions of the plant was determined. The necroses began 24 h after the first simulation mainly from the base of the leaflets. A higher level of necrosis was observed at the apical portion of the plants, a region of higher fluoride accumulation. The damage on the surface of the leaflets was characterized as plasmolysis, erosion of the epicuticular waxes and epidermal rupture. Structurally, the noticeable accumulation of granules and droplets green stained by toluidine blue in the spongy parenchima and the boundaries of ending veinlets was observed. The limb thickness reduction occurred due to plasmolysis in the mesophyll, showing an apparent correlation with the damage observed on the surface. The parameters observed in the laboratory are promising for field biomonitoring studies.

Why is Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. a common species in the mining tailings of the Fundao dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil?

Daniel Rodrigues da Silva, Carlos Ernesto Goncalves Reynaud Schaefer, Kacilda Naomi Kuki, Michel Filiphy Silva Santos, Gustavo Heringer, Luzimar Campos da Silva

Summary: This study investigated the reasons for Brachiaria decumbens becoming the main grass in pasturelands affected by mining tailings in Mariana, Brazil. It also examined the ecophysiological effects of mining tailings on B. decumbens and tested the potential of mixing the tailings with unaffected local soil to improve the affected soil properties. The results showed that the tailings compromised the normal ecophysiological state of B. decumbens, but the species was able to survive by efficiently acquiring essential elements. The soil management tested in this study could mitigate the stress caused by the tailings and serve as an alternative for environmental recovery.

Morpho-anatomical novelties of a dwarf Syagrus (Arecaceae) of canga: implications for ecology, conservation, and taxonomy

Bruno Francisco Sant'Anna-Santos, Islaine Franciely Pinheiro de Azevedo, Rafael Micheli, Patricia Soffiatti

Summary: Canga is a harsh environment with high biodiversity and endemism, but it is threatened by human activities. The Serra do Cabral mountain in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is the habitat of a micro-endemic species called canga-Syagrus graminifolia subsp. cabraliensis. This species has unique features and is affected by fires and road traffic. The absence of other populations in nearby areas is explained by predation of its seeds by beetle larvae. Due to geographical isolation and morpho-anatomical novelties, this taxon is proposed as a new species called Syagrus cabraliensis. Given the risk of extinction, it is urgent to include the population area of S. cabraliensis in Serra do Cabral State Park and divert the road.
