Summary: Diagnosing pulmonary embolism (PE) during pregnancy is a true challenge due to the similarity of symptoms with normal physiological changes. Recent studies have shown that combining clinical prediction models and D-dimer measurement can safely exclude PE in pregnant women without the need for imaging tests. However, further improvements in diagnostic strategies and technological advancements are still needed for accuracy and safety.

Summary: This study evaluated the pregnancy outcomes in women with congenital heart disease (CHD) with and without pulmonary hypertension (PH). The results showed that women with CHD-associated mild PH had better pregnancy outcomes compared to those with moderate-to-severe PH, with similar outcomes to women with CHD and no PH.

Summary: The study identified increased systemic monocyte prevalence and expression of cell surface markers suggesting a Mon 1 profile in CHF patients during episodes of APO. Future studies should define the role of systemic monocyte prevalence and activation in decompensated CHF.

Summary: In this study, the use of prehospital non-invasive ventilation (phNIV) to treat patients with acute respiratory insufficiency caused by severe acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and acute cardiopulmonary oedema (ACPE) was tested. The results showed that phNIV significantly improved oxygenation and reduced the duration of mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit stay compared to endotracheal intubation. This suggests that prehospital implementation of NIV may provide benefits for in-hospital course in these patients.

Summary: In the study of treating ACPE patients, there was no significant difference in reducing mortality between midazolam and morphine, but the midazolam group had a significantly lower rate of serious adverse events.

Summary: The study characterized the circulating small extracellular vesicles (EVs) profile of pregnant and non-pregnant women after moderate-intensity exercise, showing that pregnant women had higher levels of small EVs at baseline and a significant increase post-exercise compared to non-pregnant women. Further research is needed to explore the functional roles of exercise-induced small EVs in pregnancy.

Summary: The MRI appendicitis scale is a significant independent predictor of acute appendicitis in pregnant women. The addition of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to MRI examinations can improve the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in this population.

Summary: This study examined the serologic response in pregnant women to SARS-CoV-2 and explored its correlation with maternal clinical presentation as well as the passive immunity received by neonates. The results showed that maternal serologies were correlated with symptomatic maternal infection, and higher levels of maternal antibodies were associated with passive neonatal immunity.

Summary: Neurogenic pulmonary oedema (NPE) is a life-threatening complication that develops rapidly after injury to the central nervous system (CNS). Autonomic system imbalance, characterized by sympathetic hyperactivity and vagus nerve inhibition, plays an important role in the development of NPE.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, cost, feasibility, and acceptability of tuberculosis (TB) screening among pregnant women in Cotonou, Benin. The results showed that screening for TB among pregnant women is feasible, acceptable, and cost-effective per woman screened, but the yield in this setting is suboptimal.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in ophthalmic artery Doppler indices and their association with blood pressure in pregnant women following acute antihypertensive treatment. The results showed that antihypertensive treatment led to a reduction in blood pressure and ophthalmic artery PSV ratio. There was a significant association between PSV ratio and MAP, SBP, and DBP in hypertensive pregnant women, which disappeared after blood pressure was reduced.

Summary: Evaluation of fetal lung development in pregnant women recovered from COVID-19 using pulmonary artery Doppler showed higher peak systolic velocity and lower pulsatility indices compared to healthy pregnant women. The study suggests that detailed Doppler evaluations of the pulmonary artery may help in assessing fetal adverse effects of COVID-19.
