Burkholderia pseudomallei causes melioidosis, the third most common cause of death from infectious diseases in northeast Thailand. Four physicochemical factors were set so that their values covered the range of the northeast, which is an endemic area. The soil pH was set at pH 4-10, soil salinity was 0.0-5.0% NaCl, total iron was 50-150 mg/kg soil, and carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) was 10:1 to 40:1. The experiments were carried out at 37 degrees C, and soil moisture was maintained for 7 days. The number of viable bacterial cells was counted daily. Soil pH, salinity, Fe, and C/N ratio affected the bacterial growth. The bacterial colony was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced at soil pH > 8, soil salinity > 1% NaCl, and C/N ratio > 40:1. However, the growth of B. pseudomallei was enhanced by increasing the concentrations of iron significantly (P < 0.05). We propose using these findings to control B. pseudomallei in situ.

Growth and biosorption of Purple guinea and Ruzi grasses in arsenic contaminated soils

Summary: Increasing mining and industrial discharge of untreated wastewater, excessive use of fertilizers, and heavy metal contamination in soil are serious environmental problems worldwide. This study evaluated the influence of arsenic contamination and other factors on the growth of local forage grasses. The results showed that these grasses have high tolerance to arsenic contamination and can be used for sustainable management of ecological health in mining areas.

Chitosan biological molecule improves bactericidal competence of ceftazidime against Burkholderia pseudomallei biofilms

Summary: This study evaluates the ability of deacetylated chitosan (dCS) to disrupt biofilms of Burkholderia pseudomallei, enabling ceftazidime (CAZ) to kill the embedded bacteria. The combination of dCS and CAZ acts synergistically to kill biofilm cells more effectively than either compound alone.

Summary: The study showed that CoronaVac mainly activated antibody and certain T cell responses in the short term, but lacked long-lasting memory T cell responses, providing only short-lived protection, suggesting that a third booster dose of vaccine may improve protection.

DNase I and chitosan enhance efficacy of ceftazidime to eradicate Burkholderia pseudomallei biofilm cells

Rattiyaphorn Pakkulnan, Nuttaya Thonglao, Sorujsiri Chareonsudjai

Summary: Biofilm-associated Burkholderia pseudomallei infection contributes to antibiotic resistance and relapse of melioidosis. DNase I with ceftazidime (CAZ) inhibits biofilm formation and reduces the number of viable biofilm cells. DNase I supplemented with chitosan (CS) and CAZ eradicates both shedding planktonic and embedded biofilm cells.

Vitamin D (1α,25(OH)2D3) supplementation minimized multinucleated giant cells formation and inflammatory response during Burkholderia pseudomallei infection in human lung epithelial cells

Pohnratchada Mattrasongkram, Saharut Wongkaewkhiaw, Suwimol Taweechaisupapong, Sorujsiri Chareonsudjai, Teerasit Techawiwattanaboon, Thararin Ngamsiri, Sakawrat Kanthawong

Summary: The study found that pretreatment with 1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3 can reduce the internalization of B. pseudomallei and decrease the formation of MNGCs in A549 cells. In addition, 1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3 can enhance the expression of specific genes and reduce inflammation. Therefore, this study suggests that supplementation with 1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D-3 may be an effective supportive treatment for melioidosis patients.

Summary: Burkholderia pseudomallei is a facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes melioidosis, a severe invasive disease of humans. The stress-related catecholamine hormone epinephrine enhances motility of B. pseudomallei, transcription of flagellar genes and the production of flagellin.

Summary: In this study, genomic analysis of S. suis CC94 serotype 4 strains was performed, revealing their potential pathogenicity and virulence. These strains clustered within minimum core genome group 3 and had a high number of virulence-associated genes similar to serotype 2 strains. Cytotoxicity tests showed significant toxicity of these strains towards human and pig cells. Additionally, common antimicrobial resistance genes were found in these strains. Monitoring of these potentially pathogenic strains is recommended.
