Summary: Depressive symptoms are common in kidney failure patients even without a clinical diagnosis of depression, and they may hinder the completion of kidney transplant evaluation. The severity of depressive symptoms is associated with age, with older candidates being less likely to report such symptoms. Regardless of age, candidates who report depressive symptoms have a lower chance of being listed for kidney transplant.

Summary: This study developed a scalable metric to evaluate the performance of kidney transplant centers in providing equitable access to kidney transplant for minority patients. The results showed significant variations among transplant centers, with high KTEI centers performing more kidney transplants for minority and low socioeconomic status patients and having improved patient survival.

Summary: While media reports have highlighted cases of profit-driven hospices providing poor-quality care, there is evidence supporting the efficacy of hospice in relieving suffering and improving end-of-life care. This commentary provides a brief history of hospice and suggests potential solutions to address the current challenges in accessing high-quality hospice care.

Summary: This study investigated the kidney transplantation knowledge of KT candidates and recipients, and explored the related influencing factors. The results showed that the knowledge level was moderate and significantly associated with education level and health education. Age and fertility status were only significantly associated with the knowledge level in recipients. Therefore, healthcare providers should pay more attention to the health education of this population, considering factors such as education level, age, and fertility status.

Summary: Access to kidney transplantation in Mexico is limited to more than half of the population, primarily due to factors such as fragmented health system, gender disparities, and sociocultural issues. Efforts to increase deceased-organ donation rates and implement comprehensive kidney care programs could help address these inequalities in access to kidney transplantation.

Summary: Informing end-stage kidney disease patients about kidney transplantation options can increase the likelihood of kidney transplant waiting list enrollment and live donor kidney transplant receipt. However, the impact of informing patients on transplantation status is less pronounced at for-profit dialysis centers. Information provided by for-profit centers may be less effective compared to nonprofit centers.

Summary: Individualized education plans can enhance patients' readiness and knowledge about living and deceased donor kidney transplants, and promote their proactive pursuit of transplantation. The study indicates that a focused and coordinated educational effort can improve transplant-seeking behaviors and waitlisting rates among patients.

Summary: The epidemiology of HIV has changed, with Black individuals having a higher incidence of HIV diagnoses. Black individuals with HIV also have a higher prevalence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and face disparities in kidney transplant waitlisting. The interaction between HIV and race exacerbates these disparities.

Summary: The pass rate for the ABIM nephrology certifying exam has decreased, with factors such as lower IM certifying exam scores, older age, female sex, IMG status, and training at smaller nephrology fellowship programs being associated with poorer performance. Despite comparable IM certifying exam scores, IMGs performed less well than USMGs on the nephrology certifying exam. In 2019, only 57% of nephrology fellowship programs had aggregate 3-year certifying exam pass rates ?80% among their graduates.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic value of cardiac biomarkers and echocardiographic variables in predicting heart failure (HF) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results showed that NT-proBNP and hsTnT had better discrimination than the current HF prediction model. HF clinical prediction models tailored to CKD patients are needed.

Summary: Based on a national survey, this study provides a comprehensive description of the work experiences of US dialysis care providers. The results show that although most respondents reported job satisfaction, many do not meet criteria for professional fulfillment and experience burnout. High workloads, lack of respect, lack of autonomy, and suboptimal patient environments are commonly reported issues among dialysis care providers.

Summary: Among hemodialysis patients without diabetes mellitus, chenodeoxycholic, deoxycholic, and glycolithocholic acids may be potential biomarkers for coronary artery calcification, and arginine/proline metabolism is a plausible mechanism to study for CAC. These findings need to be confirmed in future studies.
