Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between postoperative complications and VI in ALSS, finding a 2.7% incidence of complications in the VI group but no significant difference compared to the non-VI group. However, the VI group had significantly higher intraoperative blood loss and blood transfusion compared to the non-VI group.

Summary: This study compares adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes between pregnant physicians and nonphysicians, as well as between physicians of different specialties. The findings suggest that female physicians may have a slightly higher risk of severe maternal morbidity, which may be mediated by their tendency to delay childbirth compared with nonphysicians. Newborns of physicians, however, appear to experience less morbidity. No significant differences were observed between physician specialty groups.

Summary: The primary aim of this study was to quantify early morbidity after cranial neurosurgery using the Postoperative Morbidity Survey (POMS). The results showed that POMS-defined morbidity was associated with longer postoperative hospital length of stay. However, some important morbidity items that impact on length of stay may be missed by POMS, highlighting the need for a neurosurgery-specific tool.

Summary: This retrospective study explores the preoperative and perioperative risk factors associated with postoperative respiratory failure (PRF) in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC). The study found that liberal intraoperative crystalloid volume resuscitation was a potential independent, modifiable intraoperative risk factor for PRF that may contribute to decreased long-term overall survival (OS).

Summary: Statins, commonly prescribed for high-risk patients with cerebrovascular or cardiovascular diseases, may cause neuromuscular side effects and potentially lead to neuromuscular damage. Clinical follow-up of patients can help identify early side effects and improve treatment approaches.

Summary: This study analyzed the type and origin of intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) and evaluated their relation to postoperative complications. The results showed that bleeding was the most common subcategory caused by surgery, while hypotension and organ injury were commonly caused by anesthesia. The study suggests that analyzing the type and origin of iAEs can provide targeted information for surgical and postoperative care.

Summary: This study examined the association between FIB-4, a liver fibrosis marker, and postoperative mortality in a general surgical population. The results showed that FIB-4 >= 2.67 was significantly associated with intraoperative mortality, mortality during hospitalization, and mortality within 30 days of surgery. These findings suggest that FIB-4 could serve as a useful tool for preoperative evaluation and risk stratification in surgical patients.

Summary: Cognitive bias is recognized as a significant source of medical errors, with up to 75% of internal medicine errors believed to be cognitive in origin. This study found that cognitive biases were present in the management of cases with complications, leading to an increase in management errors and lower standard of care assessments. Understanding the types of cognitive biases and their association with management errors may be useful in improving quality care.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the definition of intraoperative tachycardia during noncardiac surgery that is associated with the best predictive ability for adverse postoperative outcomes. The study found that the definitions of intraoperative tachycardia with HR >= 100 bpm for at least 30 min and HR >= 120 bpm for at least 5 min were significantly associated with adverse postoperative outcomes.

Summary: The study estimated the postoperative mortality rate following tonsillectomy in US children, finding an overall death rate of 7 per 100,000 operations and a death rate of 117 per 100,000 operations among children with complex chronic conditions. These findings may inform decision-making for pediatric tonsillectomy.

Summary: This multi-center retrospective study aimed to assess the relationship between ketorolac use and postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) and the effect of ketorolac use on overall complication rate. The results showed a significant association between ketorolac use and clinically relevant POPF, but no significant difference in overall morbidity or mortality.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with morbidity after simultaneous resection of colorectal liver metastases (CLM) and primary colorectal cancers (CRC). The results showed that prolonged operative time is independently associated with severe complications. Awareness of cumulative operative time may inform intraoperative decision-making by surgical teams.

Summary: Interventions to reduce self-harm and suicide attempts in psychiatric wards can be categorized into therapeutic interventions and organizational interventions. Dialectical behaviour therapy is the most commonly implemented and effective therapeutic intervention, while some ward-based interventions also show promising results in reducing self-harm.

Summary: Measuring staff perspectives on patient safety culture is important for identifying areas of concern in healthcare. This study conducted psychometric evaluation of HSOPSC in Bosnia and Herzegovina and found that the adapted HSOPSC-BiH showed better model fit compared to the original survey, with excellent internal consistency and construct validity. The HSOPSC-BiH is recommended for assessing PSC in BiH and formulating strategies to improve patient safety.

Summary: This research introduces the SHAPER-Implement program, which aims to study the impact of arts interventions on postnatal depression and Parkinson's disease, and explore how they can be integrated into clinical pathways for long-term sustainability. The study will use a randomized trial design to assess the implementation and cost-effectiveness of the interventions, and collect implementation data and feedback from stakeholders. The findings will be disseminated through scientific journals and conferences.

Summary: Patient safety problems in community-based mental health care have received less research attention compared to physical health care. This study aimed to investigate the conceptual and empirical challenges in understanding patient safety in community-based mental health care. The review found challenges in defining safety, evaluating safety in long-term care journeys, and establishing what constitutes a 'preventable' safety problem in this context.

Summary: During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health services quickly adapted and implemented or increased the use of telemental health services worldwide. However, limited access to digital devices, poor digital skills, and individual preferences and needs of patients may have resulted in differences in the implementation and accessibility of telemental health services during the pandemic. A blended approach that combines in-person and virtual modalities, taking into consideration the needs, preferences, and digital skills of patients, may better support the future development of mental health services.
