Summary: This study reports the 2-year outcomes of a multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing robotic and laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. The results suggest that robotic repair may offer similar or improved outcomes compared to laparoscopy at the 2-year follow-up.

Summary: The study found a high incidence of trocar-site incisional hernia (TSIH) after laparoscopic surgery, with most hernias occurring in the umbilical Hasson trocar. However, only a small percentage of patients underwent hernia repair surgery, indicating a need for increased awareness and efforts to prevent TSIH in the umbilical trocar site.

Summary: This study compared the differences in surgical site infection and incisional hernia rates between midline incision and left iliac fossa or suprapubic transverse incision in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. The results showed that midline incision was associated with higher rates of incisional hernia and surgical site infection.

Summary: Port-site hernia is an underestimated yet preventable complication. By carefully considering predisposing factors, surgical technique attention, and the use of a fascial closure device, port-site hernia can be prevented.

Summary: This study describes the national trends in surgical technique and rates of reoperation for recurrence for patients undergoing ventral hernia repair (VHR) in the United States. The results show that the surgical treatment of ventral and incisional hernias has evolved over the past two decades, with more patients undergoing minimally invasive repair, receiving mesh, and undergoing myofascial release. The rates of reoperation for hernia recurrence have slightly improved during this period.

Summary: A study of 322 obese patients undergoing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair found that class III obesity was associated with a longer hospital stay, but showed no significant differences in postoperative complications and long-term outcomes compared to class I and II obesity.

Summary: A study of 77 laparoscopic colorectal surgeries found a glove perforation rate of 1.1%, with no significant correlation between the duration of surgery and glove perforation. There was also no significant connection found between glove perforation and postoperative surgical site infections.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term recurrence rate and compared the IPOM and IPOM plus techniques for laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR). The results showed that the IPOM plus technique had a higher cut-off point for ring size and a lower recurrence risk. These findings have implications for expanding the indication for LVHR and selecting the appropriate surgical technique.

Summary: Comparing laparoscopic enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal retromuscular repair (eTEP-RM) with laparoscopic IPOM for primary ventral and incisional hernia patients, it was found that eTEP-RM is safer and more effective. Patients undergoing eTEP-RM required less additional analgesic treatment and had shorter hospital stays.

Summary: This study found that infectious complications, particularly surgical site infection (SSI), have an impact on long-term oncological results after laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer. Patients with SSI had a significantly lower postoperative relapse-free survival rate compared to those without SSI, and the differences in survival were significant after both colectomy and rectal resection. The occurrence of SSI was identified as an independent co-factor for relapse-free survival.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant growth in the surgical management of abdominal wall hernias, with advances in minimally invasive techniques leading to improved success rates and reduced complications. The objectives of hernia repair remain the same, with a focus on symptom relief and preventing recurrence. Minimally invasive approaches offer advantages such as decreased wound complications and faster recovery, but there is currently no superior procedure for ventral hernia repair. Patient characteristics, hernia type, defect size, surgeon experience, and technical aspects play important roles in decision-making for optimal approach. Other factors such as socioeconomics, perioperative nutrition and conditioning, anatomic characteristics, closure techniques, and implications for surrounding organs also contribute to the optimization of abdominal wall surgery. Aligning patient and surgeon goals and expectations before surgery can improve patient satisfaction. Attention to these details will enhance patient outcomes and ongoing research will continue to optimize treatment strategies and outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to repair midline wide ventral hernias and provide better aesthetic outcome through the comprehensive technique of anterior component separation and lipoabdominoplasty. A total of 15 overweight and obese women were included in the study and followed up for 3-6 months after surgery. The results showed that this comprehensive approach is effective for reconstructing large midline ventral defects and achieving a good aesthetic appearance in appropriately selected obese patients.
