OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this article is to evaluate whether antiplatelet therapy increases the occurrence and severity of percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy (PTNB)-related hemoptysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Our institutional review board approved this retrospective study, with waiver of informed consent. From May 2007 to December 2009, 1251 patients undergoing 1346 PTNBs constituted our study population. Of these PTNBs, 163 were performed in patients who had suspended antiplatelet therapy for less than 10 days (mean discontinuation time, 2.56 +/- 2.35 days), and these patients were classified as antiplatelet agent users: 143 patients with single aspirin (mean discontinuation time, 2.55 +/- 2.35 days), 12 patients with single clopidogrel (mean discontinuation time, 2.33 +/- 2.10 days), and eight patients with dual-antiplatelet therapy (i.e., aspirin plus clopidogrel; mean discontinuation time, 3.12 +/- 2.90 days). The influence of antiplatelet therapy on the occurrence and severity of PTNB-related hemoptysis was retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS. Among 1346 PTNBs, there were 128 cases (9.5%) of hemoptysis, including 21 cases of severe hemoptysis (1.6%). Multivariate analysis revealed that dual-antiplatelet therapy (odds ratio [ OR], 10.09), female sex (OR, 1.88), smaller lesions (OR, 0.88), deeply located lesions (OR, 1.17), and the use of cutting needles (OR, 3.22) were independent risk factors for overall hemoptysis. For severe hemoptysis, dual-antiplatelet therapy (OR, 13.02), ground-glass nodules (OR, 8.86), and deeply located lesions (OR, 1.24) were proven to be independent risk factors. Single-antiplatelet therapy suspended for less than 10 days was not a significant risk factor for either overall or severe hemoptysis. CONCLUSION. Single-antiplatelet therapy suspended for less than 10 days is not an independent risk factor for the occurrence of PTNB-related hemoptysis, whereas dual-antiplatelet therapy increases its risk.

Summary: In this study, a nanocomposite catalyst of FeNi2S4 nanoparticles/CoFe nanowires supported on nickel foam was prepared and showed excellent electrocatalytic performance. The FeNi2S4/CoFe electrode exhibited small overpotentials for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions and improved charge transfer processes. Furthermore, it also showed promising potential for urea-assisted water electrolysis with lower energy consumption. These results highlight the applications of nanoparticle and nanowire composite catalysts in wastewater treatment and green energy production.

Remote Monitoring System for Condition Management of Patients in Free Flap Surgery

Kicheol Yoon, Sung-Min Cho, Kwang Gi Kim, Young Woo Cheon

Summary: This paper proposes a remote monitoring technology to observe a patient's condition in real time, addressing the inconvenience of daily observation required in free flap surgery. The camera system captures images of the surgical site every 2 seconds and transmits them to the attending physician or nurse via Wi-Fi. Results show that high-quality images are obtained without any storage errors during the shooting process.

Synthesis of gelatin aerogel-containing Al-metal organic framework for the removal of phenolic contaminants from aqueous solutions

Taeyeon Kim, Keunyoung Yun, Nahyun Kim, Byungjun Cha, Jonghun Han, Lewis Kamande Njaramba, S. SD. Elanchezhiyan, Chang Min Park

Summary: Considerable amounts of phenols and their derivatives are present in water bodies, posing a threat to the environment due to their resistance to decomposition and high toxicity. This study focuses on the development of a novel aluminum-based metal-organic framework aerogel composite (GMA-1.0) as an effective adsorbent for the removal of phenolic compounds from aqueous environments. The results show that GMA-1.0 exhibits excellent adsorption capacity, selectivity, and performance, making it a promising material for phenolic waste remediation.

Rational design of double perovskite La2Ni0.5Co0.5MnO6 decorated polyaniline array on MoO3 nanobelts with strong heterointerface boosting oxygen evolution reaction and urea oxidation

Velusamy Maheskumar, Karunamoorthy Saravanakumar, Jagan Govindan, Chang Min Park

Summary: The design and implementation of a novel heterostructure interface of La2Ni0.5Co0.5MnO6 nanoparticles and MoO3 nanobelt array-supported amorphous polyaniline (PANI; MoO3/P) have been developed for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea electrooxidation reaction (UOR). The optimized La2Ni0.5Co0.5MnO6@MoO3/P (LMP-30) showed excellent electrocatalytic performance with low overpotentials of 300 mV at 10 mA cm-2 (vs RHE) for OER and 0.48 V at 50 mA cm-2 (vs Hg/HgO) for UOR, as well as enhanced stability after 12-hour testing. This improved performance is attributed to the distinctive hierarchical nanostructure, offering synergistic effects on electrical characteristics and an electrochemically active surface area. Furthermore, the LNCM nanoparticles on the MoO3/P nanobelts provide more electrocatalytic active sites, efficient charge transport capacity, improved electrical properties, and strong electronic contacts.
