Summary: This study investigated the relationship between hepatic fat loss and malnutrition in chronic liver disease using magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed that decreased body fat mass and triglycerides, as well as increased nutritional assessment score, were associated with hepatic fat loss. Furthermore, hepatic fat loss and Child-Pugh score were identified as independent prognostic factors for patients with cirrhosis. These findings emphasize the importance of preserving liver fat content in nutritional therapy for cirrhotic patients.

Summary: Chronic viral hepatitis is a major cause of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite being caused by different viruses, hepatitis B, C, and D have striking similarities in pathological impact. The advancements in omics and bioinformatics have revealed the important role of signaling networks in viral pathogenesis.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the aMAP score in diagnosing fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The results showed that the aMAP score had higher accuracy in diagnosing cirrhosis and advanced fibrosis compared to other markers. The combination of aMAP and LSM further improved the accuracy in detecting cirrhosis and advanced fibrosis. The aMAP-LSM model had satisfactory performance in diagnosing fibrosis stage for treated CHB patients, especially those with a significant decrease in LSM after treatment.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related death, with chronic viral hepatitis being a significant contributing factor. The pathophysiology of viral-related HCC involves liver inflammation, oxidative stress, and deregulation of cell signaling pathways. Regular ultrasound surveillance is recommended for patients with cirrhosis and high-risk individuals with chronic HBV infection. Antiviral therapy reduces the risks of HCC development and recurrence. Various scoring systems have been developed to predict the risk of HCC development in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Summary: This study found that patients infected with HDV had reduced but more activated innate immune cell populations in the liver, and an activated, memory-like, tissue-resident HDV-specific CD8(+) T-cell cluster was identified. Antigen-nonspecific activation of liver-resident CD8(+) T cells may contribute to inflammation and disease progression in HDV infection.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between HBsAg levels and hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B. The results showed that lower HBsAg levels were associated with higher rates of fibrosis and cirrhosis in HBeAg-positive patients, but not in HBeAg-negative patients. Additionally, genotype-specific HBsAg cutoffs could be used to rule out the presence of cirrhosis. These findings are important for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients.

Summary: Staging liver fibrosis has always been a challenge in viral hepatitis and other liver diseases. Non-invasive tests have been developed to overcome the limitations of liver biopsy. This review discusses the use of serological and physical markers for liver fibrosis staging in chronic hepatitis B and C. Furthermore, it addresses the issue of evaluating liver fibrosis after HCV cure.

Summary: The clinical implications of hepatitis B virus occult infection (OBI) are still uncertain, particularly in the development of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). OBI may contribute to worsening liver disease and promote HCC development through specific mechanisms. However, data on OBI prevalence and clinical impact in non-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver disease are limited.

Summary: Primary liver cancers, specifically Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. While HCC mostly develops within the hepatic parenchyma, a portion may arise in a non-cirrhotic milieu known as non-cirrhotic-HCC (NCHCC). NCHCC is often diagnosed late due to lack of surveillance and is linked to factors like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes, and viral infections such as chronic Hepatitis B. Early identification and monitoring strategies are crucial for improving outcomes in NCHCC patients.

Summary: Patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) are more susceptible to viral infections and have a reduced response to vaccination. The study found that liver injury leads to microbial translocation and increased levels of type I interferon (IFN-I), which induces excessive IL-10 production during viral infection, leading to dysfunctional T-cell immunity. Blocking IFN-I and IL-10 signaling can restore antiviral immunity in patients with liver injury.

Summary: According to the study, there was no significant difference in DGE impact after PD between patients with LC and LF and those without liver pathologies. However, patients with LC and LF may have higher ASA score, receive more intraoperative erythrocyte transfusions, stay longer in the ICU, and have more intraabdominal abscess formation.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the association between changes in liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and histological outcomes in chronic hepatitis B patients receiving entecavir-based therapy. LSM decrease of ≥30% was associated with regression of fibrosis, significant histological response, and alanine aminotransferase normalization, with a new on-treatment LSM cutoff value established for indicating significant histological response.

Summary: This study found that dynamic liver scintigraphy with [Tc-99m]Tc-mebrofenin has potential value in staging and grading chronic liver damage. The main valuable parameters are the ratio between 30 min and the peak of the dynamic curve, and liver clearance corrected for body surface area and liver area.
