Summary: Forest loss due to anthropogenic activities is a major cause of species decline. Studying the population status of species is essential to assess the impact of human activities, monitor population dynamics, and design effective conservation strategies. In this study, the population status of the threatened moor macaques in Indonesia was assessed, revealing regional declines in encounter rates and a negative impact of human activities on the species.

Summary: Effective management of protected areas is crucial for biodiversity conservation, and the status of indicator species can be used to evaluate its effectiveness. Monitoring changes in the status of indicator species over time is essential for designing and improving management plans. The eastern hoolock gibbon is considered an indicator species for habitat quality due to its preference for pristine habitats. In this study, we assessed the changes in the status of the eastern hoolock gibbon in Mahamyaing Wildlife Sanctuary over 16 years (2005-2021) by estimating density changes and population viability. The results revealed a significant decline in gibbon density and population viability, highlighting the detrimental effects of selective logging and human disturbance in the sanctuary. Adequate protection and targeted conservation efforts are needed to address these threats.

Summary: Protected areas play an important role in conserving biodiversity, but effective management is crucial. This study investigates the status and conservation management of the Vulnerable eastern hoolock gibbon in the Indawgyi Biosphere Reserve in Myanmar. The research finds that the gibbon density in the reserve is relatively low compared to similar sites in the region. The density is negatively influenced by slope and elevation, and positively influenced by distance from villages. The current management interventions are insufficient, highlighting the need to reduce human disturbance as a conservation priority.

Summary: Since 2001, the Indonesian government has implemented restoration programs to improve the water quality of the Citarum River, but these programs have faced conflicts over the definition of "water quality" and approaches to responsibility and involvement. This paper critically examines these controversies and highlights the importance of recognizing informal restoration practices to tackle river pollution.

Summary: The remnant forests on the small island of Sangihe north of Sulawesi are of great importance for conserving critically endangered bird species. The study identifies specific habitat features and areas where habitat is slightly unsuitable for these species. The findings highlight the importance of the Sahendaruman crater area for the conservation of these species and suggest measures for enhancing the habitat.

Summary: In this study, we propose an estimator for the lensing potential using galaxy number counts, which includes a linear and a quadratic term. Our results demonstrate that this estimator has a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio compared to the corresponding estimator from intensity mapping. The improved signal-to-noise ratio is attributed to the additional lensing term in the number count angular power spectrum, which appears at linear order. We estimate the signal-to-noise ratio for future photometric surveys and find that it can reach an order of magnitude of 30, particularly at high redshifts (z greater than or similar to 1.5). Therefore, we argue that number counts in photometric surveys are an excellent tool for measuring tomographic lensing spectra.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of emerging technologies in biodiversity sampling, particularly in bat point counts, to improve sampling efficiency and accuracy. Bat point counts proved to be similarly effective but more time-efficient than traditional methods in sampling bat species in oil palm plantations.

Summary: Mangrove forests are experiencing significant degradation, prompting global recognition of the need for restoration activities. However, current evaluation methods focus on survival and area restored, neglecting diversity and structure as indicators of functional forests. This study assesses mangrove species richness in different restoration stands and compares various ecological indicators to evaluate restoration outcomes.

Summary: Green Peafowl have experienced significant decline in much of their historical range in Thailand mainly due to habitat loss and degradation caused by agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development. However, a strong population remains in the northern stronghold, with high densities in protected areas surrounded by agricultural landscapes. The species prefer dry dipterocarp forest habitats but are negatively affected by human settlements. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting contiguous forest patches and involving local communities to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.

Summary: This study evaluated the forest landscape restoration (FLR) status in the Yi River watershed based on remote sensing images during 2015-2020, exploring the importance of landscape connectivity for local flora and fauna. The results showed different distance threshold values for analyzing forest landscape connectivity (FLC) in hills and low mountains. The impact of reforested patches on improving FLC varied between hills and low mountains.

Summary: This study aimed to update the 2010 survey results, investigate the population size and density of Javan gibbons in the Dieng Mountains, and examine their relationship with habitat characteristics. The results showed a likely increase in the gibbon population, with high group densities in different habitat types and an estimated overall population size of 1092. This suggests some success in conservation efforts over the past decade, but further effort is needed to ensure the long-term future of this threatened species.
