Summary: This study compared the treatment effects of mandibular advancement using different fixed functional appliances in Class II malocclusion patients. Both appliances caused anterior and caudal displacement of the epiglottis and hyoid bone, as well as an enlargement of the posterior airway space. The Herbst appliance showed slightly greater therapeutic effects, although not significantly.

Summary: In this prospective study comparing fixed lingual orthodontic appliance and aligner system, it was found that the aligner group initially showed subtle injuries on the lips and cheeks, while lingual patients experienced more discomfort in swallowing and opening the mouth, with more frequent impact on consonants. However, these speech disturbances recovered within three months after appliance insertion.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of aligners and fixed orthodontic appliances on neuromuscular activity and compare the differences between the two treatments. The results showed that fixed orthodontic appliances caused slight alterations in muscular activity after bracket removal, while no significant alterations were observed in the aligners treatment group.

Summary: A study comparing the experiences of orthodontic patients with removable and fixed appliances in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, shows that fixed orthodontic patients face significantly more difficulties in sleeping, tongue and cheek sores, and food impaction compared to those with removable appliances. The study also reveals a positive correlation between oral health impact, treatment duration, and pain intensity.

Summary: This study investigates the toxicity and cellular response to metal ions released by fixed orthodontic appliances on gastrointestinal tract cells. The eluates of archwires, brackets, ligatures, and bands were tested for their prooxidant effect, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity on four different cell lines. The results show that most eluates were toxic to CAL 27 cells and that CaCo-2 cells were the most resistant. The eluates induced free radical formation in AGS and Hep-G2 cells, and eluates containing Cr, Mn, and Al showed slight prooxidant effect and genotoxicity.

Summary: This study compared the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes in patients with hypodivergent and hyperdivergent growth patterns after orthodontic treatment using fixed functional appliances (FFA). The results showed that there were differences in treatment outcomes between the two groups, but significant differences were only found in overbite and interincisal angle. Almost all measurements suggested similar treatment-related changes for both groups, except for dentoalveolar parameters.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of orthodontic treatment with aligners and conventional fixed appliances on speech production. Changes in speech production were observed at the start of treatment in patients with aligners, but both groups reported significant speech difficulties immediately after appliance insertion. Over time, speech production improved in both groups.

Summary: The study compares a digital measurement technique with a traditional measurement technique to assess the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of measuring the wear of the bracket slot walls after orthodontic treatment. The results show that the digital measurement technique is a reproducible, repeatable, and accurate method.

Summary: Oral appliance treatment for obstructive sleep apnea patients with headaches showed significant improvement in headache characteristics, with a higher prevalence of morning headaches in headache responders. The study suggests that oral appliance treatment can be beneficial for OSA patients with headaches, especially those with mild to moderate OSA.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the behavior and size of orthodontic extraction spaces in Class I, II, and III malocclusions. The results showed that the percentage of closed quadrants at the end of treatment was 71.4% in the cross-sectional group and 65.1% in the longitudinal group. Reopening and late closure tendencies were higher in the short term compared to the long term. There was long-term stability in 87% of the closed quadrants at the end of treatment, and a significant reduction in extraction space size, particularly in the mandibular arch.

Summary: This study aims to explore the impact of orthodontic treatment on the oral microbiota, potentially leading to the occurrence of caries, periodontal diseases, and other infections that affect the oral and systemic health of orthodontic patients. Comparison with subjects without orthodontic appliances revealed significant differences in supra- and subgingival plaque among orthodontic patients throughout the treatment period, with certain fixed appliance components posing high risks of periodontal disease and tooth decay. Further investigation is needed on the prevalence of Candida spp. and the lack of studies on viruses and protozoas in the oral microbiota of orthodontic patients.

Summary: The study found that visual pedagogy through toothbrushing can effectively improve oral hygiene and gingival health among autistic children, especially for those with poor initial oral hygiene and gingival conditions. Other developmental and socio-economic backgrounds had insignificant associations on the improvement of these clinical parameters.

Summary: The study investigated parental compliance towards oral health education (OHE) among children with special healthcare needs (SHCN). Factors influencing parental compliance included parents' oral health literacy (OHL) skills, usefulness of OHE materials, and children's developmental conditions. Individualized OHE programs should be tailored to effectively support children at risk for noncompliant behaviors.
