Summary: Endophthalmitis following intraocular surgery is rare with current antiseptic techniques, but challenges such as increased multidrug-resistant bacterial endophthalmitis and low rate of endophthalmitis caused by typical bacteria still exist. Recent findings show that povidone-iodine is widely available and repetitively applying diluted povidone-iodine can effectively sterilize the ocular surface.

Summary: Intravitreal administration of povidone-iodine demonstrated efficacy in treating Candida albicans endophthalmitis by reducing inflammation and fungal growth. However, the combination with voriconazole did not show a synergistic effect. The findings suggest that povidone-iodine may be a useful treatment option for this condition.

Summary: The study showed that using 0.66% povidone-iodine eye drops before cataract surgery effectively reduced the conjunctival bacterial load and facilitated the smooth progress of the operation. Analysis of 120 patients revealed that all subjects showed a reduction or no regrowth of bacterial load. The study indicates that povidone-iodine eye drops can be an effective perioperative prophylactic treatment.

Summary: In this study, a new two-dimensional iodine nanomaterial called iodinene was proposed for the treatment of infectious diseases in vivo. Iodinene demonstrated enhanced antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by in situ production of active HIO and I2 molecules via allotropic transformation. The in vivo results further confirmed the desirable antibacterial efficacy of iodinene in treating bacterial wound infection and pneumonia.

Summary: In this study, a simple method is reported to prepare two-dimensional iodine nanosheets (2D iodine NSs) with good stability and high biocompatibility using an aqueous solvent-assisted ultrasonic route. Due to the large specific surface area of the 2D morphology, iodine NSs effectively interact with bacterial membranes, leading to the destruction of bacterial integrity and further damage to intracellular DNA. Consequently, the iodine NSs exhibit significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus both in vitro and in vivo.

Summary: Patch testing with PVP-I 2% aq. showed the lowest number of doubtful skin reactions while detecting the single allergic patient, suggesting it as the optimal preparation for iodine patch tests. Overestimation of iodine allergy was indicated, and positive patch test responses to iodine should be confirmed with ROATs before diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the incidence of febrile infectious complications after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy in men receiving ciprofloxacin prophylaxis alone versus ciprofloxacin with povidone-iodine transrectal injection. The results showed a lower rate of febrile infectious complications in patients who received both ciprofloxacin and povidone-iodine prophylaxis compared to those who only received ciprofloxacin.

Summary: The study estimated the number of colonies forming units (CFU) in penile mucosa and semen and compared the effect of two antiseptic solutions used to reduce bacterial counts in those areas. The results showed that flushing the preputial cavity with 0.05% chlorhexidine digluconate or 1% povidone-iodine solution reduced the CFU counts in penile mucosa and semen.

Summary: The study revealed that patients wearing surgical face masks for more than 4 hours had higher bacterial contamination in the periocular area, but the contamination was significantly reduced by using povidone-iodine. These findings suggest that the contamination of masks should be taken into consideration in the asepsis protocol for intravitreal injections.

The presence of hemorrhage and change in central subfield thickness were significantly associated with the change in visual acuity at month 6, with central subfield thickness being a more important predictor.

Summary: This study compared the baseline characteristics, treatment burden, and outcomes of macular edema in HRVO and CRVO patients. The study found a higher proportion of Black participants in HRVO group compared to CRVO group, and no significant differences in the frequency of macular edema treatments between the two groups. Although CRVO eyes had worse visual acuity and more macular edema compared to HRVO eyes at baseline, the magnitude of VALS improvement, central retinal thickness response to anti-VEGF therapy, and treatment burden were similar between the groups.

The results show that while there is significant improvement in visual acuity and central subfield thickness during the initial treatment period, the improvement lessens when treatment is at the discretion of the investigator. However, most patients continue to receive treatment in the 5-year period.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between early discontinuation of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment and baseline factors and outcomes. The study found that compared to the continuous treatment group, patients who discontinued treatment early were younger and had a higher proportion of black individuals. They also had a higher proportion of complete resolution of macular edema and a lower central thickness over follow-up, but their visual acuity was not better than the continuously treated and intermittently treated groups. The results support the need for continued monitoring and individualized treatment for patients with macular edema from central or hemiretinal vein occlusion.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the association between visit adherence and visual acuity in patients with retinal vein occlusions. Visit adherence was measured by the number of missed visits, average and longest visit interval, and average and longest missed days. The study found that the number of missed visits was associated with a decrease in visual acuity, but the length of visit interval was not associated with changes in visual acuity.

Summary: There is a nonlinear association between central subfield thickness (CST) on spectral-domain OCT and concurrent visual acuity letter score (VALS) in eyes treated initially with afli-bercept or bevacizumab for macular edema associated with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) or hemiretinal vein occlusion (HRVO). The best expected VALS is observed when post-treatment CST is close to the estimated inflection points.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the safety and effects of combined intravitreal injection of dexamethasone and bevacizumab in patients with refractory diabetic macular edema (DME). The results indicated that the combined therapy led to increased intraocular pressure and the need for anti-glaucomatous eye drops, as well as reduced central sub-foveal thickness. However, there was no significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity.

Summary: This study found a strong correlation between the severity of macular infarction measured by hyper-reflectivity of the middle and inner retinal layers and long-term visual outcomes in participants with central retinal vein occlusion. Despite significant improvement in macular edema after treatment, participants with more severe macular infarction showed worse visual outcomes, suggesting that macular infarction may play a role in visual acuity even after anti-VEGF treatment.

The IgA-staining deposits in the drusen are likely related to systemic deposition of IgA. The nature of cystic spaces in the drusen is still unknown. Summary: The study investigated the phenotype, variability, and penetrance of IMPG2-related maculopathy. The results showed that mono-allelic IMPG2 variants could result in haploinsufficiency manifesting as a maculopathy with variable penetrance and expressivity. The maculopathy is usually limited to the fovea and is associated with moderate visual impairment.
