PURPOSE: To investigate whether the enhanced depth imaging technique (EDI) may improve the visualization of the lamina cribrosa using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). DESIGN: Prospective observational case series. METHODS: Images of the optic nerve were obtained in 10 normal subjects, 7 glaucoma suspects, and 18 glaucoma patients by positioning an SD-OCT in the usual fashion, as well as close enough to the eye to obtain an inverted representation of the fundus (EDT). In addition to these single line scans, approximately 65 sections were obtained within a 10 x 15-degree rectangle covering the optic nerve head using EDT. The depth of signal was measured as the distance from the optic cup surface and the point where the signal ended in both single line scan images. RESULTS: Compared to the image obtained with the SD-OCT used in the usual fashion, images obtained with EDI provided larger depth of signal (728.04 +/- 124.20 vs 368.79 +/- 75.15 mu m, P < .001) below the optic cup surface and better image contrast from the deep optic nerve; this facilitated the discrimination of the lamina cribrosa. In the en face image, the lamina cribrosa was visualized as a highly reflective plate containing multiple pores that corresponded with the color fundus photographs. CONCLUSION: Using EDT SD-OCT, the full-thickness lamina cribrosa was clearly visualized in all eyes examined. This technique should facilitate the investigation on the lamina cribrosa in glaucoma, and may provide additional insight into the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Summary: This study aimed to investigate the influence of peripapillary retinoschisis (PRS) on visual field (VF) test results in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). The results showed that PRS had no short-term effect on VF sensitivity, and VF testing can still be used for evaluating glaucomatous damage.

Differences in Resumption of Orthopedic Surgery According to Characteristics of Surgery during COVID-19 Pandemic: National Registry Data

Hyung Jun Park, Moon Jong Chang, Tae Woo Kim, Chong Bum Chang, Seung-Baik Kang

Summary: The study aimed to determine the recovery of orthopedic surgery volumes over time during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of COVID-19 on orthopedic surgery volumes weakened as the pandemic continued. While the total volumes of orthopedic surgery decreased by 8.5%-10.1% in the first wave, they recovered to a 2.2%-2.8% decrease from the expected volumes during the second and third waves. The resumption of surgery differed based on the surgical characteristics, with open reduction and internal fixation and cruciate ligament reconstruction decreasing, while total knee arthroplasty showed recovery. Hemiarthroplasty of the hip did not see a decrease throughout the year.

Intereye Comparison of the Characteristics of the Peripapillary Choroid in Patients with Unilateral Normal-Tension Glaucoma

Jeong-Ah Kim, Dong Hwan Son, Eun Ji Lee, Hyunjoong Kim, Tae-Woo Kim

Summary: The characteristics of the peripapillary choroid (PPC) were compared between the eyes of patients with unilateral treatment-naive normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Eyes with NTG showed higher intraocular pressure, thinner PPC, larger area and maximum radial width of beta-zone parapapillary atrophy (PPA), and more frequent microvasculature dropout (MvD) compared to contralateral healthy eyes. Factors such as higher IOP, thinner PPC, larger maximum radial width of beta-zone PPA, and the presence of MvD were independently associated with the risk of NTG.

Summary: This study examines the rates and trends of faculty promotions within the field of ophthalmology, with a focus on the rates of promotion among underrepresented in medicine (URiM) faculty. The results show that Black faculty had lower promotion rates and were more likely to leave academic medicine, highlighting the need for strategies and policies to address equity in promotion rates and retention of URiM faculty in academic ophthalmology.

Drusen and Other Retinal Findings in People With IgA Glomerulonephritis

Ursula Greferath, Erica Fletcher, Judy Savige, Heather G. Mack

Summary: Retinal drusen are uncommon in IgA nephropathy, but they resemble drusen found in age-related macular degeneration. The IgA-staining deposits in the drusen are likely related to systemic deposition of IgA. The nature of cystic spaces in the drusen is still unknown. Further research on the retinas of people with glomerulonephritis is recommended.

Association Between Vision Difficulty and Sociodemographic Factors in Children: A Population-Based Analysis

Andrew Mihalache, Ryan S. Huang, Nikhil S. Patil, Marko M. Popovic, Ashwin Mallipatna, Peter J. Kertes, Rajeev H. Muni, Radha P. Kohly

Summary: This study examines sociodemographic predictors of poor vision in children and adolescents in the US. The findings suggest that factors such as affordability of medical care, public health insurance, age, and parental education level are associated with vision difficulty. Addressing these disparities through public health policies is crucial for achieving equity in vision health.

IMPG2-Related Maculopathy

Johannes Birtel, Richard Caswell, Samantha R. De Silva, Philipp Herrmann, Salwah Rehman, Andrew J. Lotery, Omar A. Mahroo, Michel Michaelides, Andrew R. Webster, Robert E. Maclaren, Peter Charbel Issa

Summary: The study investigated the phenotype, variability, and penetrance of IMPG2-related maculopathy. The results showed that mono-allelic IMPG2 variants could result in haploinsufficiency manifesting as a maculopathy with variable penetrance and expressivity. Family members of patients with IMPG2-related retinitis pigmentosa may also present with vitelliform lesions. The maculopathy is usually limited to the fovea and is associated with moderate visual impairment.

Summary: The study aimed to validate or refute the hypothesis that infants with birthweight over 750 g and gestational age over 27 weeks, who did not have retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) at 37 weeks, would not develop treatable ROP. The findings of the study supported the termination of examination at 37 weeks in infants meeting these criteria, as the value of continued screening was minimal.

Impact of Gender and Underrepresented in Medicine Status on Research Productivity Among Ophthalmology Residency Applicants

Emily Sun, Jing Tian, Loaah Eltemsah, Divya Srikumaran, Grace Sun, Jessica Chow, Fasika Woreta

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the research productivity of ophthalmology residency applicants and identify differences in productivity based on gender and race. The findings reveal that women have similar or higher research outputs compared to men, while self-identified underrepresented in medicine (URiM) students have lower research outputs in ophthalmology. Therefore, greater mentorship and support for URiM students are needed to promote the recruitment of diverse trainees in ophthalmology programs.
