Summary: This study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of anti-parietal cell antibodies (anti-PCA), anti-intrinsic factor antibodies (anti-IFA), pepsinogen ratio (PGI/II), and gastrin-17 (G-17) in corpus-restricted atrophic gastritis (CRAG) detected by ELISA. The study found that the combination of PGI/II and anti-PCA was the best non-invasive biomarker combination for detecting CRAG.

Summary: Pernicious anemia (PA) is a type of anemia that affects blood, stomach, and immune system, and is associated with autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells. This study found significantly elevated levels of IL-19 in the serum of PA patients, as well as higher production of IL-19 in the stomach of these patients. These findings provide new insights into the pathogenesis of PA.

Summary: Pernicious anemia is a neglected and underdiagnosed disorder that is linked to but different from autoimmune gastritis. It is associated with cobalamin deficiency and can lead to various dysfunctions and clinical presentations. Delayed recognition or diagnosis of pernicious anemia may result in potentially life-threatening complications. This review aimed to explore the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentations, micronutrient deficiencies, diagnostic approach, long-term complications, clinical management, and endoscopic surveillance of pernicious anemia.

Summary: Despite the global decrease in gastric cancer incidence, there has been an increase in recent years among young patients, particularly females. The cause of this new type of gastric cancer is still unknown, but autoimmunity may play a role. A study was conducted to analyze the prevalence of several autoantibodies in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) compared to control patients. The results showed that ANA positivity was significantly higher in autoimmune gastritis patients (AIG) compared to non-autoimmune gastritis patients (NAIG) and control patients, while APCA and AIFA positivity were confirmed in AIG. Overall, the study did not support an overrepresentation of common autoantibodies in CAG patients.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) and coeliac disease (CD) association and compare the clinical, biochemical, and histological features of adults affected by both diseases. The results showed that the association between AAG and CD is rare, with a prevalence of 2% in AAG patients with CD. Adults with both AAG and CD were younger and had a higher prevalence of normocytic anaemia compared to those with AAG only.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression profile of selected miRNAs in patients with autoimmune atrophic gastritis, non-autoimmune multifocal atrophic gastritis, and healthy control subjects. The results showed that miR-21 was overexpressed in patients with gastric precancerous conditions, while miR-142 and miR-223 were underexpressed compared to healthy controls. Controlling miRNA expression could have significant implications for treating chronic autoimmune diseases and cancer progression.

Summary: The study assessed the levels of intrinsic factor autoantibodies (IFA) in patients with corpus atrophic gastritis (CAG) using a luciferase immunoprecipitation system (LIPS). Results showed that IFA levels were higher in CAG patients compared to controls, with a higher prevalence in females, especially in those under 65 years old.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the incidence rate of gastric cancer, low-grade dysplasia, and type-1 gastric neuroendocrine tumor development in adults with autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis (AMAG). Thirteen studies were included and the meta-analysis showed a relative risk of 11.05 for gastric cancer development in AMAG patients. The study emphasizes the potential for malignant transformation of precancerous lesions and the importance of careful esophagogastroduodenoscopy screening.

Summary: The study found that patients with CAG were more likely to be female, have microcytic anemia, and show no mucosal lesions during endoscopy compared to patients with AAG. Decreased hemoglobin levels and low MCV were better predictors for CAG compared to serum iron levels in histological examinations.

Summary: This study investigated whether autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) and chronic hypergastrinemia are associated with increased calcitonin (Ct) levels. The results showed that high gastrin levels in patients with AAG do not explain hypercalcitonemia, regardless of the presence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT). Therefore, further diagnostic evaluation is necessary to rule out medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) in patients with high Ct levels and AAG.

The results showed that for tumors with a diameter <5 mm, noninterventional endoscopic surveillance after initial incomplete resection is feasible. The recurrence rate did not significantly differ among the different endoscopic techniques used.

Summary: This study evaluated the antineoplastic effect of multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitor pazopanib in primary human anaplastic thyroid cancer cells in vitro. The results showed that pazopanib inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and increased apoptosis. Moreover, pazopanib significantly decreased the expression of VEGF in the cells.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the differences in dietary habits between patients with diverticular disease (DD) and controls without diverticula. The results showed that patients with DD had lower daily calories and lipids intake compared to the controls. Protein consumption was lower in previous diverticulitis (PD) patients compared to those with asymptomatic diverticulosis (D). Fiber and dietary vitamins intake were also lower in DD patients compared to the controls. These findings suggest that DD patients have distinct dietary habits compared to the control subjects.

Summary: In adults, celiac disease (CD) diagnosis is based on specific serology and duodenal histology. This study aimed to compare the clinical, histological, and biochemical differences between adult CD patients with high tTG IgA titer (HT) and low titer (LT) at diagnosis and follow-up. HT patients had more severe histological damage and persistent antibodies positivity at follow-up compared to LT patients, although they recovered similarly after a Gluten-free diet.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, enters cells through the ACE2 receptor found in various tissues, including endocrine organs like the ovaries, testes, pancreas, and thyroid. SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with thyroid disorders and can also induce autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Further research is needed to better understand this relationship.

Summary: This narrative review aimed to report the SCAD diagnostic criteria adopted in different studies, highlighting the current challenges and main pitfalls in its diagnosis. The analysis of fourteen studies showed that SCAD diagnosis is often based on not fully adequate macroscopic colonic description and scant biopsy protocol sampling. An accurate clinical and endoscopic evaluation, with an adequate sampling biopsy protocol, with attention to differential diagnosis, seemed to be crucial for a prompt SCAD diagnosis.

Summary: This study aimed to assess gender differences in gastric bacterial microbiota between subjects with healthy stomachs and those with autoimmune atrophic gastritis. Results showed that women with healthy stomachs had a higher gastric bacterial abundance and less microbial diversity compared to men. Autoimmune atrophic gastritis seems to reset gender differences in gastric bacterial abundance and reduce biodiversity in males.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of [F-18]FDG PET/CT in low-grade gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasia. The retrospective study included 55 patients with grade 1 GEP-NETs. The results showed that approximately half of the patients had positive findings on [F-18]FDG PET/CT, which had a negative impact on clinical outcomes. These findings support the potential use of [F-18]FDG PET/CT in selected cases to detect patients at higher risk for an unfavorable disease course.
