PURPOSE: To investigate the occurrence of and risk factors for autoimmune thyroid disease in atrophic body gastritis patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional study on 401 consecutive outpatients with atrophic body gastritis. Diagnostic work-up of thyroid disease was completed in 319 atrophic body gastritis patients (225 women, median age 55.5 years [range 17-95 years]). Data on anagraphics, lifestyle, family history, and biochemical and histological items were obtained at baseline, and associations between atrophic body gastritis and autoimmune and nonautoimmune thyroid diseases were explored through descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Of the 319 atrophic body gastritis patients, 169 (53%) had an associated thyroid disorder, and 89 (52.7%) of these were unaware of it. The thyroid disease was autoimmune in 128 patients (75.7%) and nonautoimmune in 41 patients. Logistic regression showed that risk factors for having autoimmune thyroid disease in atrophic body gastritis patients were female sex (odds ratio [OR] 5.6, 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6-12.1), presence of parietal cell antibodies (OR 2.5, 95% CI, 1.1-5.5), and presence of metaplastic atrophy (OR 2.2, 95% CI, 1.0-5.0). CONCLUSIONS: Autoimmune thyroid disease and atrophic body gastritis occur in a closely linked fashion, suggesting that atrophic body gastritis patients should be investigated for an occult autoimmune thyroid disease, in particular women and those with positive parietal cell antibodies. Autoimmune atrophic gastritis and coeliac disease: A case-control study

Laura Conti, Gloria Galli, Chiara Ligato, Marilia Carabotti, Bruno Annibale, Edith Lahner

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of autoimmune atrophic gastritis (AAG) and coeliac disease (CD) association and compare the clinical, biochemical, and histological features of adults affected by both diseases. The results showed that the association between AAG and CD is rare, with a prevalence of 2% in AAG patients with CD. Adults with both AAG and CD were younger and had a higher prevalence of normocytic anaemia compared to those with AAG only.

Barbara Polese, Marilia Carabotti, Sara Rurgo, Camilla Ritieni, Giovanni Sarnelli, Giovanni Barbara, Fabio Pace, Rosario Cuomo, Bruno Annibale

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the differences in dietary habits between patients with diverticular disease (DD) and controls without diverticula. The results showed that patients with DD had lower daily calories and lipids intake compared to the controls. Protein consumption was lower in previous diverticulitis (PD) patients compared to those with asymptomatic diverticulosis (D). Fiber and dietary vitamins intake were also lower in DD patients compared to the controls. These findings suggest that DD patients have distinct dietary habits compared to the control subjects.

Comparison of Clinical, Biochemical and Histological Features between Adult Celiac Patients with High and Low Anti-Transglutaminase IgA Titer at Diagnosis and Follow-Up

Gloria Galli, Marilia Carabotti, Laura Conti, Silvia Scalamonti, Bruno Annibale, Edith Lahner

Summary: In adults, celiac disease (CD) diagnosis is based on specific serology and duodenal histology. This study aimed to compare the clinical, histological, and biochemical differences between adult CD patients with high tTG IgA titer (HT) and low titer (LT) at diagnosis and follow-up. HT patients had more severe histological damage and persistent antibodies positivity at follow-up compared to LT patients, although they recovered similarly after a Gluten-free diet.

Common Diagnostic Challenges and Pitfalls in Segmental Colitis Associated with Diverticulosis (SCAD)

Caterina Sbarigia, Camilla Ritieni, Bruno Annibale, Marilia Carabotti, Alessandro Armuzzi

Summary: This narrative review aimed to report the SCAD diagnostic criteria adopted in different studies, highlighting the current challenges and main pitfalls in its diagnosis. The analysis of fourteen studies showed that SCAD diagnosis is often based on not fully adequate macroscopic colonic description and scant biopsy protocol sampling. An accurate clinical and endoscopic evaluation, with an adequate sampling biopsy protocol, with attention to differential diagnosis, seemed to be crucial for a prompt SCAD diagnosis.

Ludovica Magi, Daniela Prosperi, Giuseppe Lamberti, Matteo Marasco, Valentina Ambrosini, Maria Rinzivillo, Davide Campana, Guido Gentiloni, Bruno Annibale, Alberto Signore, Francesco Panzuto

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of [F-18]FDG PET/CT in low-grade gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasia. The retrospective study included 55 patients with grade 1 GEP-NETs. The results showed that approximately half of the patients had positive findings on [F-18]FDG PET/CT, which had a negative impact on clinical outcomes. These findings support the potential use of [F-18]FDG PET/CT in selected cases to detect patients at higher risk for an unfavorable disease course.
