Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Overactive Bladder and Urinary Incontinence Symptoms in Older Men: Ancillary Findings From a Randomized Trial

Alayne D. Markland, Camille P. Vaughan, Alison J. Huang, Eunjung Kim, Vadim Y. Bubes, Vin Tangpricha, Julie R. Buring, I-Min Lee, Nancy R. Cook, JoAnn E. Manson, Francine Grodstein

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in preventing or treating overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in men. The results showed that overall, vitamin D supplementation did not improve overactive bladder or urinary incontinence compared to placebo. However, there were inconsistent findings when vitamin D supplements were used in men with lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Family Planning and Fertility Counseling Perspectives of Gender Diverse Adults and Youth Pursuing or Receiving Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy

Eric Walton, Sina Abhari, Vin Tangpricha, Cameron Futral, Akanksha Mehta

Summary: This study investigated family planning and fertility counseling perspectives of reproductive-age gender diverse adults and youth pursuing gender affirming hormone therapy. The results showed that individuals interested in or uncertain about future parenthood were more likely to consider cryopreservation and report inadequate family planning counseling. Therefore, current counseling practices may be insufficient and referral to a fertility specialist should be considered.

Summary: This study introduces the latest developments in transgender healthcare and the role of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and its Standards of Care (SOC). SOC-8 is a new set of guidelines for transgender healthcare, aiming to provide healthcare professionals with clinical guidance to assist transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals in achieving comfort and overall health. The guidelines are based on the best available science and expert consensus, and recommendations were developed through systematic literature reviews and expert opinions.

Assessing and Addressing the Risk of Venous Thromboembolism Across the Spectrum of Gender Affirming Care: A Review

Renata Arrington-Sanders, Nathan T. Connell, Devin Coon, Nadia Dowshen, Anna L. Goldman, Zil Goldstein, Frances Grimstad, Noelle Marie Javier, Ellie Kim, Martina Murphy, Tonia Poteat, Asa Radix, Aviva Schwartz, Colt St Amand, Carl G. Streed Jr, Vin Tangpricha, Mabel Toribio, Robert H. Goldstein

Summary: Gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) improves mental health outcomes in transgender persons, but the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) should be considered, especially during long-term therapy and perioperative period. Hormone formulation, dosing, route, and duration of therapy can impact thromboembolic risk, and individualized risk assessment is necessary to avoid stopping GAHT due to concerns about VTE risk.

Prevalence of self-inflicted injuries among transgender and gender diverse adolescents and young adults compared to their peers: an examination of interaction with mental health morbidity

Sanjana Pampati, W. Dana Flanders, Qi Zhang, Brian K. Ahmedani, Shalender Bhasin, Darios Getahun, Timothy L. Lash, Courtney McCracken, David E. Sandberg, Michael J. Silverberg, Vin Tangpricha, Suma Vupputuri, Michael Goodman

Summary: Comparison between self-inflicted injuries among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth and their cisgender peers reveals that TGD individuals are more likely to engage in self-harm and have multiple mental health diagnoses. Universal suicide prevention efforts are necessary for all youth, including those without mental health issues, with intensified efforts for TGD youth and those with mental health diagnoses.

Incidence and Factors Associated With Acne in Transgender Adolescents on Testosterone: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Lena Chu, Sarah Gold, Carlyn Harris, Leslie Lawley, Pranav Gupta, Vin Tangpricha, Michael Goodman, Howa Yeung

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of acne among transgender adolescents receiving testosterone. It found that 54% of the patients who did not have baseline acne developed acne within 1 year of testosterone initiation. Patients who used progestin prior to or during follow-up were more likely to develop acne. Therefore, transgender adolescents starting testosterone, particularly those taking progestin, should be monitored for acne development and treated proactively.

Adherence to Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy in Transgender Adolescents and Adults: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Summary: This study investigated the proportion and reasons for discontinuation of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. The results showed that only a small percentage of participants discontinued GAHT, and the main reason was achieving desired treatment effects. This suggests that GAHT discontinuation is low when therapy follows the guidelines of the Endocrine Society.

Satisfaction with current hormone therapy and goals of additional gender-affirming care in transgender adults

Meron Siira, Darios Getahun, Michael J. Silverberg, Vin Tangpricha, Michael Goodman, Howa Yeung

Summary: This study examined patient satisfaction with current gender-affirming hormone therapy and their goals for additional hormone therapy. The majority of participants were satisfied with their current therapy, but transfeminine individuals and older participants were less likely to report satisfaction. Transfeminine individuals were more likely to plan for additional treatment to achieve goals such as breast size growth and feminine body fat distribution, while transmasculine individuals aimed for reducing dysphoria and masculine body fat distribution.

Validation of an administrative algorithm for transgender and gender diverse persons against self-report data in electronic health records

Summary: The study aims to validate an algorithm for identifying transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients within electronic health record (EHR) data and evaluate its accuracy. The algorithm was validated in an EHR data set with self-reported gender identity using TGD-related diagnosis and procedure codes, and hormone therapy prescription data. The results showed that the algorithm had good sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value in identifying TGD patients in administrative data. Further categorization based on prescription data also had high accuracy.

Changes in bone turnover after high-dose vitamin D supplementation during acute pulmonary exacerbation in cystic fibrosis

Malinda Wu, Anirudh Bhimavarapu, Jessica A. Alvarez, William R. Hunt, Vin Tangpricha

Summary: People with cystic fibrosis have increased risk for low bone mineral density and CF-related bone disease due to chronic inflammation and infection. This study suggests that vitamin D supplementation during acute pulmonary exacerbation may help reduce the risk for CF-related bone disease by decreasing markers of bone turnover.

Summary: The prevalence of psoriasis among transgender individuals is similar to that in the general population, but further longitudinal research is needed to explore the potential association between psoriasis and gender-affirming hormone therapy.
