Association of erythropoietin resistance and fibroblast growth factor 23 in dialysis patients: Results from the Japanese Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study

Tomoko Usui, Junhui Zhao, Douglas S. Fuller, Norio Hanafusa, Takeshi Hasegawa, Hiroshi Fujino, Takanobu Nomura, Jarcy Zee, Eric Young, Bruce M. Robinson, Masaomi Nangaku

Summary: In this study of 1044 haemodialysis patients, higher levels of FGF23 were associated with younger age, higher levels of various serum markers, and increased risks of ESA-hypo. The relationship between FGF23 and anaemia, particularly the elevated risks of ESA-hypo at low FGF23 levels, requires further confirmation in larger clinical studies.

International Comparisons of Native Arteriovenous Fistula Patency and Time to Becoming Catheter-Free: Findings From the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS)

Ronald L. Pisoni, Lindsay Zepel, Junhui Zhao, Steven Burke, Charmaine E. Lok, Kenneth J. Woodside, Haimanot Wasse, Hideki Kawanishi, Douglas E. Schaubel, Jarcy Zee, Bruce M. Robinson

Summary: This study compared international differences in AVF patency and catheter dependence duration between the United States, Japan, and EUR/ANZ regions. Findings showed higher AVF patency in Japan, while longer catheter dependence duration was observed in the US and EUR/ANZ regions. The results emphasize the need to reevaluate practices for long-term access planning, especially in AVF maturation.

The risk of medically uncontrolled secondary hyperparathyroidism depends on parathyroid hormone levels at haemodialysis initiation

Nahid Tabibzadeh, Angelo Karaboyas, Bruce M. Robinson, Philipp A. Csomor, David M. Spiegel, Pieter Evenepoel, Stefan H. Jacobson, Pablo-Antonio Urena-Torres, Masafumi Fukagawa, Issa Al Salmi, Xinling Liang, Ronald L. Pisoni, Eric W. Young

Summary: The study found that patients with higher PTH levels before starting hemodialysis were more likely to be prescribed active vitamin D and calcimimetics during the first year of hemodialysis. Additionally, these patients had a higher risk of having PTH levels greater than 600pg/mL 9-12 months after starting hemodialysis.

A real-world longitudinal study of anemia management in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients: a multinational analysis of CKDopps

Marcelo Barreto Lopes, Charlotte Tu, Jarcy Zee, Murilo Guedes, Ronald L. Pisoni, Bruce M. Robinson, Bryce Foote, Katarina Hedman, Glen James, Antonio Alberto Lopes, Ziad Massy, Helmut Reichel, James Sloand, Sandra Waechter, Michelle M. Y. Wong, Roberto Pecoits-Filho

Summary: This study describes longitudinal patterns of anemia prescriptions for non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients under nephrologist care. Results show that anemia treatment is initiated in a limited number of patients, even those with guideline-based indications. Discontinuation of anemia treatment is also very common.

Xinju Zhao, Qingyu Niu, Liangying Gan, Fan Fan Hou, Xinling Liang, Zhaohui Ni, Yuqing Chen, Junhui Zhao, Brian Bieber, Bruce Robinson, Xiaonong Chen, Li Zuo

Summary: The number of hemodialysis patients in China is increasing rapidly, with most patients being older and primarily affected by chronic glomerulonephritis and diabetes. Some patients also have hepatitis B or C infections. The study provides insights into the demographic and clinical characteristics as well as treatment patterns of HD patients in China.

The combination of malnutrition-inflammation and functional status limitations is associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients

Eiichiro Kanda, Marcelo Barreto Lopes, Kazuhiko Tsuruya, Hideki Hirakata, Kunitoshi Iseki, Angelo Karaboyas, Brian Bieber, Stefan H. Jacobson, Indranil Dasgupta, Bruce M. Robinson

Summary: The study found that the combination of Malnutrition-Inflammation-Complex (MIC) and low functional status (FS) is strongly associated with mortality in hemodialysis patients. Identification of MIC and poor FS may help decrease adverse clinical outcomes in this setting.

Davies, David W. Johnson, Kriang Tungsanga

Summary: The PD Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study in Thailand revealed high prevalence of hypokalaemia, anaemia, poor nutritional status and culture-negative peritonitis among PD patients in the country. Patients from Bangkok metropolitan region showed better outcomes compared to provincial regions, emphasizing the impact of the center on key success factors in PD.
