Messenger RNA Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Vaccination With BNT162b2 Increased Risk of Bell's Palsy: A Nested Case-Control and Self-Controlled Case Series Study

Eric Yuk Fai Wan, Celine Sze Ling Chui, Vanessa Wai Sei Ng, Yuan Wang, Vincent Ka Chun Yan, Ivan Chun Hang Lam, Min Fan, Francisco Tsz Tsun Lai, Esther Wai Yin Chan, Xue Li, Carlos King Ho Wong, Raccoon Ka Cheong Chung, Benjamin John Cowling, Wing Chi Fong, Alexander Yuk Lun Lau, Vincent Chung Tong Mok, Frank Ling Fung Chan, Cheuk Kwong Lee, Lot Sze Tao Chan, Dawin Lo, Kui Kai Lau, Ivan Fan Ngai Hung, Chak Sing Lau, Gabriel Matthew Leung, Ian Chi Kei Wong

Summary: Based on electronic health records in Hong Kong, the risk of Bell's palsy increased following BNT162b2 vaccination, particularly within 14 days after the second dose. However, the absolute risk remains very low, so the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination still outweigh the small risk of Bell's palsy.

SURPASS-ET: phase III study of ropeginterferon alfa-2b versus anagrelide as second-line therapy in essential thrombocythemia

Srdan Verstovsek, Norio Komatsu, Harinder Gill, Jie Jin, Sung-Eun Lee, Hsin-An Hou, Toshiaki Sato, Albert Qin, Raymond Urbanski, Weichung Shih, Oleh Zagrijtschuk, Craig Zimmerman, Ruben A. Mesa

Summary: Patients diagnosed with high-risk essential thrombocythemia (ET) have limited treatment options. Hydroxyurea is the recommended treatment, but many patients experience resistance or intolerance. This article introduces interferon as a potential second-line therapy and mentions an ongoing clinical trial (SURPASS-ET) that will evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new type of interferon (ropeginterferon alfa-2b) compared to anagrelide.

The Development and Clinical Applications of Oral Arsenic Trioxide for Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia and Other Diseases

Lynn Chin, Cyrus R. Kumana, Yok-Lam Kwong, Harinder Gill

Summary: Appreciation of the properties of arsenic trioxide (ATO) has revolutionized the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) and holds promise for numerous other diseases. ATO's ability to counteract the effects of the oncoprotein PML::RARA, found in APL patients, has made it a curative treatment when combined with all-trans retinoic acid. Additionally, ATO's multiple mechanisms of action have opened up possibilities for its use in various autoimmune or inflammatory disorders, solid organ tumors, lymphomas, and other subtypes of AML. The development of oral ATO has improved treatment convenience and accessibility.

Health-related quality of life in Hong Kong physicians up to 20 years post-graduation: A cross-sectional survey

Amy Pui Pui Ng, Weng Yee Chin, Eric Yuk Fai Wan, Julie Chen, Chak Sing Lau

Summary: This study compared the health-related quality of life of Hong Kong physicians to the general population and explored the factors associated with mental and physical health-related quality of life. Results showed that doctors had worse mental health compared to the general population. Regular exercise was positively associated with physical health, while having children and higher personal burnout scores were negatively associated with it. Poorer mental health was correlated with worse burnout, depression, and patient-related burnout.

Effectiveness of molnupiravir vs nirmatrelvir-ritonavir in non- hospitalised and hospitalised patients with COVID-19: a target trial emulation study

Eric Yuk Fai Wan, Vincent Ka Chun Yan, Zoey Cho Ting Wong, Celine Sze Ling Chui, Francisco Tsz Tsun Lai, Xue Li, Carlos King Ho Wong, Ivan Fan Ngai Hung, Chak Sing Lau, Ian Chi Kei Wong, Esther Wai Yin Chan

Summary: The study found that Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir was more effective than Molnupiravir in reducing the risk of all-cause mortality in both non-hospitalised and hospitalised patients with COVID-19. Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir users had lower risks of all-cause mortality and hospital admission compared to Molnupiravir users, while there was no difference in the risk of intensive care unit admission or ventilatory support between the two drugs.

Interleukin-33 Ameliorates Murine Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Is Associated with Induction of M2 Macrophage Polarisation and Regulatory T Cells

Mo Yin Mok, Ka Sin Law, Wing Yin Kong, Cai Yun Luo, Endale T. Asfaw, Kwok Wah Chan, Fang Ping Huang, Chak Sing Lau, Godfrey Chi Fung Chan

Summary: This study found that exogenous IL-33 can ameliorate disease activity in lupus-prone mice by inducing M2 polarization, Th2 response, and expansion of regulatory T cells. This is likely achieved through upregulation of ST2 expression, orchestrating autoregulation of these cells.
