Summary: The multidisciplinary smoking cessation clinics in Thailand have been proven effective in helping smokers quit smoking. The clinics had a higher success rate for smokers with cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study suggests that including multidisciplinary smoking cessation clinics in the universal health care benefits package would be beneficial.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of waterpipe tobacco (WTP) smoking on all-cause mortality. The results showed that smokers had a higher risk of mortality compared to non-smokers. Specifically, current WTP smokers and dual smokers using WTP and cigarettes had significantly elevated mortality risk. Smoking cessation for more than 10 years decreased the risk of all-cause mortality and cancer.

Summary: This study investigated the association between waterpipe smoking and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) mortality. It found that exclusive waterpipe smokers had a higher risk of NPC death compared to exclusive cigarette smokers. The intensity of waterpipe smoking, earlier age of smoking initiation, longer duration, and cumulative number of smoke lifetime were all positively associated with NPC risk. The findings suggest that waterpipe smoking is more harmful than cigarettes in developing NPC, and strict tobacco control measures are recommended.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a prognostic scoring tool to predict loss to follow-up (LTFU) among TB patients who smoke, in order to improve successful TB treatment outcomes. Using longitudinal data from the Malaysian Tuberculosis Information System (MyTB) database, a simple prognostic score (T-BACCO SCORE) was constructed. The model exhibited fair discrimination and good calibration, making it a reliable tool to predict the risk of LTFU among TB patients who smoke.

Summary: This study aims to determine the prevalence of postpartum anal sphincter defects using 3D endoanal ultrasonography (3D-EAUS) and evaluate their association with symptoms of pelvic floor pain and dyspareunia. The results showed that 20% of patients had anal sphincter defects at 3 months postpartum, and many of them were not clinically diagnosed with obstetric anal sphincter injury at the time of delivery. Patients with sonographic defects had higher fetal weight and a perineum <2 cm before the suture was a risk factor for defects. Patients with sonographic defects also had a higher frequency of dyspareunia and pelvic floor pain.

Summary: In a population-based cohort study in Sweden, the authors found differences in incidence and survival between early-onset and later-onset esophagogastric adenocarcinoma. Male predominance was higher in early-onset cases, except for noncardia gastric cancer. Early-onset patients had more advanced stages and signet ring cell morphology. Incidence trends were similar between early-onset and later-onset cases, with an increase in esophageal adenocarcinoma, stable cardia cancer, and a decrease in noncardia gastric cancer. Early-onset patients had better survival, especially in localized stages and women.

Summary: In late 2010, a Cryptosporidium hominis outbreak in ostersund, Sweden affected 27,000 inhabitants. A prospective cohort study was conducted to investigate the long-term effects of the infection. Follow-up questionnaires were sent after 5 and 10 years, with a response rate of 74% after 10 years. The study found that cryptosporidiosis was associated with a threefold risk of reporting symptoms 10 years post-infection, and consistent symptoms were associated with prolonged infection.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and its associated risk factors in a general population, analyzing data from three time periods: 1979-1980, 2007-2008, and 2015-2016. The results showed that the prevalence of GORD did not significantly change over the four decades. Overweight and smoking were consistently associated with GORD, but the importance of overweight as a risk factor became greater than smoking over time.

Summary: This study calculated years of life lost (YLL) due to the top 10 solid tumors causing the most deaths, using data from the Swedish National Cancer and Cause of Death Registers. The results showed that lung and colorectal cancer remained the leading causes of YLL, while pancreatic and breast cancer moved up in rank. Prostate cancer, on the other hand, moved down in rank. Women consistently lost more life years due to lung and pancreatic cancer, and the decline in colorectal cancer mortality was only reflected as a YLL decline in women. YLL is a simple and intuitive measure that expands our understanding of the cancer burden on society.
