Summary: This study evaluated the risk factors influencing the incidence of venous thromboembolism in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, finding that aging, steroid therapy, surgery, and ulcerative colitis are associated with higher risks, while female gender did not increase the incidence of venous thromboembolism in these patients.

Summary: In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (pIBD) can also be accompanied by venous thromboembolism (VTE). This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the available data on the prevention and management of VTE in pIBD. The review found that testing for thrombophilia conditions was rarely available and though most patients made a full recovery, a small percentage died secondary to their VTE. The feasibility of conducting randomized clinical trials on this topic is low, but there has been an increase in interest and literature over the past decade, suggesting the need for a consensus statement from experts in the field.

Summary: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease, and early diagnosis along with prompt treatment is crucial for better prognosis. Anemia, low albumin, and elevated d-dimer are independent predictors of CVST in IBD patients.

Summary: The study investigated the mortality and risk factors of TE in IBD patients in Japan. The incidence of TE among 31,940 IBD patients was 1.89%, with 10.7% developing severe TE and 1.0% TE-associated mortality. Ischemic heart disease was the only risk factor for severe ATE and ATE-associated death, while age, VTE location, and disease severity were independent risk factors for severe VTE and VTE-associated death.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at high risk of malnutrition. This study evaluated the association between an electronic medical record-derived modified malnutrition risk score and IBD-related hospitalization, surgery, and venous thromboembolism. The results showed a significant association between malnutrition risk and these adverse outcomes.

Summary: The risk of major bleeding is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease during anticoagulation, with exposure to anticoagulation and ulcerative colitis as independent risk factors for major bleeding events. This risk may be outweighed by the high VTE recurrence rate in patients with IBD.

Summary: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colon cancer (CC) who develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) have unique procoagulant properties that differ from those with IBD or CC alone, as indicated by predictors of VTE in a study using Nationwide Inpatient Sample data from 2005-2014.

Summary: This study looked at pediatric IBD patients with VTE and found that the presence of central venous catheter and steroid use were independent risk factors. The median age at VTE occurrence was 17 years, with almost half of the cases being admitted due to VTE. Additionally, anticoagulation treatment did not result in major bleeding events in patients.

Summary: This study found that venous thromboembolism (VTE) complications are common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) similar to cancer patients. The polygenic score (PGS) provides more informative risk information for personalized thromboprophylaxis compared to monogenic mutations (F5/F2).

Summary: There is increasing evidence of higher prevalence of sarcopenia in IBD patients due to increased muscle atrophy. This systematic review aimed to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia in IBD patients, investigate its impact on patients, and assess the effectiveness of nutritional interventions. The review included 35 studies and found that over one third of adult IBD patients have myopenia or pre-sarcopenia, and nearly a fifth have sarcopenia. Myopenic IBD is associated with increased risk of therapy failure, postoperative complications, low bone mineral density (BMD), and potential risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Personalized nutrition plans may improve muscle mass in IBD patients.

Summary: Studies have shown an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with IBD, potentially due to inflammation-induced endothelial dysfunction and development of CVD, as well as gut microbiota dysbiosis. Dietary patterns have also been identified to influence the relationship between IBD and CVD.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the cardiovascular risk in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, finding no overall excess of vascular events in the IBD group, but an increased risk of myocardial infarction with more active disease. This suggests the potential for anti-inflammatory therapies to reduce cardiovascular risk in IBD patients.

Summary: This study suggests that UC patients who undergo intermittent follow-up colonoscopies have colorectal cancer detected at earlier stages and experience improvement in all-cause mortality, compared to those who do not have follow-up colonoscopies. Summary: This population-based study compared the risk of hospitalization with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in children with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The findings showed that children with IBD had a significantly higher incidence of CDI during hospitalization compared to children without IBD. Screening for CDI should be conducted for symptomatic children with IBD who are hospitalized.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of antegrade enema initiation on healthcare utilization. The results showed no significant differences in the rate of hospitalizations, outpatient visits, or same-day surgical procedures between the intervention group and the control group. However, the intervention group had an increased rate of emergency department visits, primarily due to device-related complications.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the experiences and perspectives of patients living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in accessing healthcare. The findings revealed that IBD patients face numerous challenges including issues related to timely access to specialty care. Summary: Patients with lower educational attainment are underrepresented in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research. A study conducted in Montreal, Canada, aimed to understand the healthcare perspectives of these patients. The findings highlighted the importance of access to IBD specialists, good care, and supportive staff. The study also identified the challenges of living with IBD, such as physical and emotional symptoms, reduced social engagement, and difficulties with medications. These insights can contribute to the development of equitable healthcare delivery models.
