Summary: The presence of microscopic CD at the resected specimen margins was not associated with the risk of disease recurrence in CD patients undergoing ileocecectomy. Other factors such as surgical approach, specific procedures required, and presence of perianal disease were identified to correlate with early recurrence. These results support a conservative approach to the extent of resection in CD patients undergoing ileocecectomy.

Summary: This study investigated predictors for disease recurrence in long-term follow-up of Crohn's disease patients after surgery. The results indicate that age at diagnosis, penetrating disease behavior, intra-abdominal abscess, and concomitant fistula and abscess are risk factors for CD recurrence after surgery.

Summary: The majority of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) develop chronic inflammation and experience relapses that can lead to irreversible damage. Surgery is often required for complicated cases, with a high risk of repeated operations. Intestinal ultrasound (IUS) is a non-invasive and cost-effective method that can assess various aspects of CD, such as bowel characteristics, fistulas, and abscesses. IUS can also predict the response to treatment, disease progression, and the risk of surgery and post-surgical recurrence, making it a valuable tool for IBD physicians.

Summary: Immediate postoperative intra-abdominal septic complications (IASC) increase the risk of endoscopic and surgical recurrence in patients with Crohn's disease. Preoperative optimization to prevent IASC, along with postoperative biological prophylaxis, may help reduce the risk of endoscopic and surgical recurrence.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the pathophysiology and risk factors for postoperative recurrence (POR) in patients with Crohn's disease. The role of the microbiome, mesentery, immune system, and genetic background in POR is discussed, along with the identification of risk factors and the development of preventive strategies based on individual patient profiles.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that over one third of patients who underwent total proctocolectomy for Crohn's disease were estimated to have small bowel Crohn's recurrence at 5 years after surgery. Patients with a history of small bowel surgery for Crohn's and diagnosis at any early age may have a higher risk of recurrence.

Summary: The study aims to identify a model of clinical and genetic risk factors predicting the risk of surgical recurrence after the first abdominal surgery in Crohn's Disease patients through hypothesis-free genome-wide search. Results showed that patients with a history of immunomodulatory use and early era of CD first surgery have a higher risk of surgical recurrence. The novel genetic locus rs2060886 in TCF4 was associated with surgical recurrence risk at genome-wide significance level.

Summary: The oncological impact of positive surgical margins (PSM) after robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is still under debate. This study compared PSM and Negative Surgical Margins (NSM) in terms of recurrence-free survival (RFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS), and overall survival (OS) after RAPN. The results showed that PSM did not have any significant impact on RFS, MFS, or OS. The predictors of PSM were a lower RENAL score, longer warm ischemia time (WIT), and Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (chrRCC).

Summary: The study identified several biological pathways in surgical ileal mucosa specimens associated with an increased risk of disease recurrence. Integration of the JAK/STAT and mitochondrial dysfunction pathways in the clinical model improved the prediction of post-operative recurrence.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) within 5 years after the first parathyroidectomy. The results showed that dialysis start time to first operation time < 3 years, postoperative PTH > 106.5 pg/mL, and postoperative phosphorus > 5.9 mg/dL were significant risk factors for recurrent SHPT.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of molecularly targeted therapy after surgical treatment of spinal metastasis. Participants were divided into two groups, one receiving targeted therapy after surgery (TT group) and the other not receiving targeted therapy (non-TT group). The results showed that the TT group had significantly longer median survival, less local recurrence, and better preservation of neurological function and ability to walk compared to the non-TT group. In conclusion, molecularly targeted drugs improve survival but do not alter local control of metastatic tumors in patients with spinal metastasis.

Children exposed to passive smoking are also at a higher risk of becoming active smokers later in life.

Summary: Histological evaluation of surgical margins is crucial for accurate prognostication and adjuvant treatment recommendation after excision of soft tissue sarcoma in dogs. Guidelines are lacking on how to manage clean but close margins, and the impact of CbCM on local recurrence of canine STS is significant. Excised STS with infiltrated margins have the greatest risk of LR, while CbCM may be considered as a separate prognostic category.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different cooling methods on neurologic outcome and survival in patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest (CA). The results showed that intravascular cooling (IC) was significantly associated with better neurologic outcome and survival compared to surface cooling without temperature feedback (SCnoF). There were no significant differences in neurologic outcome and survival between IC and surface cooling with temperature feedback (SCF), and between SCF and SCnoF.
