Summary: Boronic acids are crucial for synthesizing bioactive molecules and exploring structure-activity relationships. With over ten thousand commercially available options, medicinal chemists face the challenge of selecting the most informative ones for new target molecule synthesis. This article identifies frequently used boronic acids and their properties through mining large databases, and proposes a diverse set of boronic acids for efficient library design. In addition, a web tool called the Boronic Acid Navigator is provided to assist chemists in making their own selections.

Summary: Restoration ecologists study the role of functional traits in community assembly and ecosystem functioning. However, practitioners often do not explicitly consider the use of traits in restoration. This article highlights four reasons preventing the use of traits in restoration and offers actions that can be taken to better incorporate functional traits in restoration practice.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate antimicrobial use on four racetracks in the eastern US during the peak racing season of 2017-2018. A total of 2,684 antimicrobial prescriptions were recorded, representing 6.8% of all drug treatments. The most commonly prescribed antimicrobials were enrofloxacin, gentamicin, ceftiofur, and penicillin.

Summary: A newly discovered letter written by Hermann J. Muller in August 1948 reveals his claim that papers by Frederick Hanson and Florence Heys, including those supporting the LNT dose response model, were fraudulent. Muller's silence on this issue, which he referred to as a major scientific scandal, suggests a conflict of interest between his obligation to the scientific community and his desire for continued funding and advocacy for the LNT model. This decision allowed the papers to be widely cited and negatively impact radiation science, LNT interpretation, and public health.

Summary: In ethics, intuitions are often used as standard means of justification, but the typical understanding of this practice, called descriptive evidentialism, is false. The author argues that regardless of how intuitions are interpreted, they are not to be treated as evidence of their propositional contents. However, ethicists do rely on intuitions for various purposes, such as clarification, persuasion, discovery, or support, but these claims should be distinguished from the prevalent dogma.

Summary: This study examines the link between firm export activity and female employment share in China and finds that exporters tend to have a larger share of female employees and a smaller gender earnings gap compared to non-exporters. The analysis suggests that this gender-friendlier behavior is driven by cost-competitive motivations rather than international laws or exploiting gender comparative advantages. Additionally, the study shows that the production profession, non-SOEs, and firms with lower management efficiency in China are more sensitive to market competition.

Summary: This study examines whether high grades accompanying with the growth of female teachers arise from student improvement or grade inflation. The results show that high grades do not result from student progress but from grade inflation. Female teachers practice grade inflation for different students, and the effect is more pronounced among female students, low-ability students, and students in senior grades. The adoption of high-grades practice by female teachers may be influenced by potential pressures under discrimination and uncertainty rather than for the sake of course or students.

Summary: The majority of dermatology publications had statistical significance, but very few included absolute risk and risk-benefit analyses. Additionally, 42% of studies authored by dermatology residents reported statistical significance but lacked absolute risk or risk-benefit analyses. Reviewers need to pay more attention to evidentiary requirements for clinical recommendations, and dermatology residents may benefit from additional statistics training.

Summary: The single nucleotide polymorphism rs9557195 within the GPR183 gene is associated with increased risk of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and may play a role in regulating gut inflammation. GPR183 may have a pro-inflammatory role in IBD, as demonstrated by increased surface expression on T cells with potential involvement in gut inflammation. Additionally, this SNP is also associated with higher psoriasis rates in IBD patients.

Summary: Treatment failures in spine surgery are often due to poor patient selection and inappropriate treatment. This study retrospectively analyzed outcome data from a group of patients operated in a Spine Centre and found a relationship between appropriateness of surgery and improvements in COMI score after surgery. Further prospective studies with a control group of non-operated patients are needed to confirm these findings.
