Summary: This paper provides insights on identifying the shear strength parameters of masonry panels with irregular texture by using non-linear finite element analyses and calibrating constitutive parameters based on past experimental tests. A new methodology for interpreting Sheppard test results is proposed, which introduces shear strengths at first-cracking and at collapse, overcoming some drawbacks of the classical interpretation.

Summary: The importance of empirical versus theoretical laws in geosciences is controversial. This study defends the development of new empirical laws by showing that they can accurately reflect phenomena if certain criteria are followed. The study provides examples to demonstrate the accuracy of new empirical laws compared to widely accepted historical relationships.

Summary: Understanding the in-situ mechanical properties of masonry is necessary for modifications or additions to existing structures. The commonly used in-plane shove test for estimating shear strength of masonry bond has some limitations. In this paper, a new alternative in-situ test called the pull test is proposed, which measures shear strength by extracting a single brick orthogonally. The experiments show that the pull test can be used as an alternative to the shove test under certain conditions, and it has demonstrated repeatability and requires minimal instrumentation. The pull test is particularly relevant for designing anchorages under out-of-plane loading.

Summary: In this article, a method called ProposalVLAD is proposed for effective and end-to-end action proposal generation. The method utilizes Proposal-Intra Exploring Network (PVPI-Net) to localize temporal segments of human activities in videos. It dynamically generates global features of the entire video and combines them with proposal local features to generate reliable proposal confidence scores. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop a novel screening approach for colorectal cancer using serum metabolomic profiles, and to evaluate the metabolic alterations associated with the disease. The results showed that the metabolomic signature can be used as a non-invasive screening tool for colorectal cancer, and identified differences primarily associated with cell glucose metabolism.

Summary: A beam-end test is proposed to investigate the anchorage strength of reinforcing bars in different concrete types and casting positions. The proposed test aims to simulate real design conditions and evaluate the adequacy of existing provisions in the fib Model Code for nonconventional concrete. Experimental results from various tests verify the validity of the proposed bond test and provide insights into the top cast effect and anchorage performance in different types of concrete.

Summary: The paper discusses the strength characteristics of a grouted connection for shear transfer, comparing high-performance cementitious grout with polymer concrete. Through experiments and finite element models, it was found that there are differences in shear and tensile capacity between the two types of grout, with Sikadur-42 showing the best performance in terms of ductility and load capacity.

Summary: L-arginine is crucial for nitric oxide synthesis and supplementation with its precursor L-citrulline, found in watermelon, can improve vascular function. However, there are differing findings on the effect of watermelon supplementation, possibly due to varying L-citrulline doses. Food technology can be applied to concentrate L-citrulline content and reduce volume for convenient ingestion. Watermelon-derived L-citrulline appears to be an effective supplementation for improving vascular health.

Summary: The global market for nutritional supplements is rapidly growing, and there is considerable research interest in the effects of Arg, Cit, and CitMal supplements on cardiovascular health and exercise performance. Previous studies have shown that Cit supplements have a positive impact on nitric oxide synthesis and athletic performance, while the effects of Arg supplements are inconclusive. Further research is needed to determine the impact of CitMal supplements on muscle endurance performance. Future studies should also explore the effects of these supplements on different populations and dosage, timing, and long-term effects.

Summary: The incidence of obesity and metabolic diseases is increasing globally, causing detrimental effects on human health. Dietary fats, especially triglycerides, are a major source of energy for the body and are absorbed by the intestine through a complex series of steps. Long-term high-fat diets can disrupt intestinal function, leading to obesity and metabolic disorders. Therefore, regulating the absorption of dietary triglycerides shows promise as a therapeutic strategy. This review discusses various aspects of the processes involved in the digestion, absorption, and utilization of dietary triglycerides in intestinal epithelial cells, as well as potential targets that could influence fat-induced obesity and metabolic diseases. The limitations and drawbacks of modulating targets involved in dietary lipid absorption are also mentioned to provide a better understanding of their effectiveness as drugs in obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Summary: This article proposes a Self-guided Proposal Generation approach (SPG) for weakly supervised object detection (WSOD) in remote sensing images. The proposed approach significantly improves the performance of WSOD by generating informative object proposals using confidence propagation and mining techniques. Evaluation on challenging datasets shows that SPG achieves state-of-the-art results compared to existing methods.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the association between vedolizumab (VDZ) trough concentration and clinical and biochemical remission in the maintenance phase. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between VDZ concentration and clinical remission in all patient groups. However, patients in biochemical remission had higher VDZ trough concentrations. Therefore, there is an association between VDZ concentration and biochemical remission, but not with clinical remission.
