Spice crops agroforestry systems in the East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania: growth analysis

A scarcity of cultivation land calls for more intensive and productive land use in the East Usambara Mountains in NE Tanzania. Spice crops could generate cash in higher parts of the mountains, but the present cultivation methods are depleting the valuable forest resources. The trial was established at the end of 2000 to find out how the two popular cash crops, cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton.) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), normally grown under the natural forest, will produce in intensive agroforestry system with two multipurpose farm trees, Grevillea robusta A.Cunn. and nitrogen fixing Gliricidia sepium Jacq. Results from 6 years showed that cardamom produced better with grevillea than in natural forest; 5.5 times more in the fourth year than the average in the area. The Land Equivalent Ratios for black pepper and cardamom showed that pepper intercropped with grevillea produced 3.9 times more than in monoculture whereas cardamom intercropped with grevillea and pepper produced 2.3 times more than in monoculture. Gliricidia improved the nitrogen and organic matter content of the soil over the levels found in natural forest. Soil acidity was, however, preventing the plants from using the available mineral nutrients more effectively.

Summary: The study analyzed the incorporation of canopy temperature minus air temperature in a simple ecophysiological model across three trials testing different water treatments. The results showed that under certain conditions, this model could predict potato yield more accurately.

Active in situ and passive airborne fluorescence measurements for water stress detection on a fescue field

Summary: This study used the Ledflex fluorometer to measure the effect of water stress on chlorophyll fluorescence in a fescue field under extreme temperature and light conditions. The results showed a significant decrease in fluorescence level under water stress, which was correlated with surface temperature difference. Airflex fluorometer data obtained from an ultralight plane also supported the findings.

Active and passive chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at canopy level on potato crops. Evidence of similitude of diurnal cycles of apparent fluorescence yields

Summary: We conducted active and passive measurements of diurnal cycles of chlorophyll fluorescence on potato crops for 26 days. The results showed that variations in chlorophyll fluorescence were directly influenced by changes in irradiance conditions. Under cloudy sky, chlorophyll fluorescence varied in parallel with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). On clear sky days, a M-shaped diurnal pattern with a minimum around noon was observed. We derived a proxy of fluorescence yield (FYSIF) from spectral transmittance and demonstrated its close relationship with Fs, outperforming other normalization methods.

Water Saving Using Thermal Imagery-Based Thresholds for Timing Irrigation in Potatoes under Drip and Furrow Irrigation Systems

Summary: Under the water crisis in agriculture, irrigation methods that save and conserve water are necessary. This study analyzed the effectiveness of two irrigation timing thresholds based on thermal imagery on potato yield and environmental impact. The results showed that irrigation thresholds determined by thermal imagery can reduce production costs and improve yield under furrow irrigation systems.

ESTIMATION OF RELATIVE CHLOROPHYLL CONCENTRATIONS IN POTATO (Solanum tuberosum L.) LEAFLET USING VEGETATION REFLECTANCE TECHNIQUES

Summary: This study introduces a nondestructive method to estimate chlorophyll concentrations in potato leaves based on vegetation reflectance. The results were validated with the SPAD chlorophyll meter, showing correlations greater than 90%. This study highlights the potential of vegetation reflectance techniques as indicators for estimating plant biochemical-physiological parameters.
