In this study we compared the efficiency of two Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) species, the indigenous T. euproctidis Girault and the cosmopolitan T. achaeae Nagaraja & Nagarkatti, for the biological control of the tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Three release doses (25, 50 and 75 parasitoids/m(2)) for each species were tested in a two-year experiment (growing seasons: 2011/2012 and 2012/2013), in protected tomato cultivations in Egypt. The results show that both Trichogramma species were significantly efficient, especially at higher doses, in keepingdown T. absoluta mines during both experimentation years. Although no significant differences were found between the efficiency of the two species, the inclusion into Egyptian integrated and biological T. absoluta management programmes of the autochthonous species, T. euproctidis, might be preferred for its adaptation to Egyptian environmental conditions and for its expected lower non-target effect on the local fauna.

Ultra-minimally invasive surgery in gynecological patients: a review of the literature

Marco La Verde, Gaetano Riemma, Alessandro Tropea, Antonio Biondi, Stefano Cianci

Summary: Ultra-minimally invasive surgery (UMIS), including minilaparoscopic and percutaneous endoscopic surgery, has been widely used in gynecological surgeries. This literature review analyzed methodologically valid studies and found that UMIS approaches are feasible and safe for complex gynecological procedures.

Microbial mutualism suppression by Trichoderma and Bacillus species for controlling the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus

Antonio Gugliuzzo, Dalia Aiello, Antonio Biondi, Giorgio Giurdanella, Gaetano Siscaro, Lucia Zappala, Alessandro Vitale, Giovanna Tropea Garzia, Giancarlo Polizzi

Summary: Xylosandrus compactus is an invasive ambrosia beetle causing severe damage to host plants. The cryptic habits and wide host range of this beetle have facilitated its rapid spreading worldwide. Effective control strategies for this beetle are still lacking, and this study examined the potential of commercially available microbial agents as alternative management tools. The results showed that the tested microbials can suppress the growth of the beetle mutualist and affect the development of its progeny.

Nanostructured lipid carriers of essential oils as potential tools for the sustainable control of insect pests

S. Tortorici, C. Cimino, M. Ricupero, T. Musumeci, A. Biondi, G. Siscaro, C. Carbone, L. Zappala

Summary: Plant essential oils (EOs) have the potential to reduce the environmental impact of conventional management systems. However, their practical application is hindered by various challenges. In this study, Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLCs) were used to overcome these challenges and deliver EOs to insect pests. The results showed that the NLCs successfully delivered the EOs and effectively controlled certain pest species.

Lethal and sublethal effects of synthetic and bioinsecticides toward the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus

Antonio Gugliuzzo, Gaetano Giuliano, Roberto Rizzo, Giovanna Tropea Garzia, Antonio Biondi

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of several insecticides in controlling X. compactus, a highly invasive species causing damage to various host plants. The results showed that some of the tested insecticides had significant lethal and sublethal effects on the beetles. This research provides important baseline data for the development of integrated pest management strategies against this pest.

The geographic scope of host use by the ladybeetle parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae

Michele Ricupero, Francisca Zepeda-Paulo, Nuri Cabrera, Antonio Biondi, Chanchung Dai, Lucia Zappala, George E. Heimpel, Jacques Brodeur, Nicolas Desneux, Blas Lavandero

Summary: This study examined the variation in parasitism of D. coccinellae on H. axyridis populations in different regions and hosts, and inferred its putative origin. The results showed that parasitism rates of D. coccinellae on invasive H. axyridis and native hosts were remarkably similar, not supporting the enemy release hypothesis. However, parasitism rates of H. axyridis were much lower in its native range, indicating a potential contribution to the control of invasive populations. Genetic relationships analysis revealed widespread haplotypes of D. coccinellae with no host-associated genetic structure.

Role of plant essential oil nanoemulsions on host colonization by the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus

Antonio Gugliuzzo, Valeria Francardi, Sauro Simoni, Pio Federico Roversi, Marta Ferrati, Eleonora Spinozzi, Diego Romano Perinelli, Giulia Bonacucina, Filippo Maggi, Simona Tortorici, Giovanna Tropea Garzia, Antonio Biondi, Roberto Rizzo

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of five plant essential oil nanoemulsions on the behavior and reproduction of the invasive ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus compactus. The results showed that nanoemulsions based on Rosmarinus officinalis cv. verbenone and Carlina acaulis had significant repellent effects on the beetle, while the effect of R. officinalis oil decreased at lower concentrations. However, the EO treatments had no effect on the number of offspring produced by the beetles. Overall, the findings suggest that R. officinalis and C. acaulis essential oils can be used as repellents for X. compactus in sustainable integrated pest management strategies.

Volatiles of fungal cultivars act as cues for host-selection in the fungus-farming ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus germanus

Antonio Gugliuzzo, Juergen Kreuzwieser, Christopher M. Ranger, Giovanna Tropea Garzia, Antonio Biondi, Peter H. W. Biedermann

Summary: Many wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles and ambrosia beetles, use aggregation pheromones during colonization of host trees. This study focused on the exotic ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus germanus and discovered that it is attracted to its primary nutritional mutualist Ambrosiella grosmanniae and other fungal isolates. It was also found that X. germanus preferentially selects branch sections that are pre-colonized by conspecifics or pre-inoculated with A. grosmanniae. Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) were identified as potential aggregation pheromones for X. germanus. This research provides the first evidence of fungal volatiles as attractive cues during host selection by X. germanus.

Summary: The toxicity of essential oils from lime, petitgrain, and bergamot, as well as their major compounds, against T. absoluta was evaluated. The results showed that the essential oils were toxic to T. absoluta, and low concentrations caused deleterious effects on its reproductive and population parameters.

Toxicity of Cinnamomum spp. essential oil to Tuta absoluta and to predatory mirid

Karolina Gomes de Figueiredo, Gabriel Tadeu de Paiva Silva, Luis Clepf Passos, Dejane Santos Alves, Antonio Biondi, Geraldo Andrade Carvalho

Summary: This study evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of Cinnamomum essential oils on Tuta absoluta and found that the essential oils significantly decreased the duration of the pest's life cycle stages and fecundity, as well as showed high toxicity to the larvae. However, the essential oils also caused significant mortality to the predatory insect Macrolophus basicornis, indicating potential incompatibilities with other integrated pest management tools.
