Summary: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study data shows that the prevalence, incidence, and burden of schizophrenia have been increasing since 1990. In countries with high socio-demographic index, both prevalence and burden have increased, while in countries with low socio-demographic index, the incidence has decreased but the burden remains stable. These findings highlight the need for improved detection and treatment of schizophrenia in low socio-demographic index countries and the increasing prevalence of the disorder.

Summary: Iceland has a low incidence of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), suggesting a low need for KRT. The country also provides a well-characterized population for studying the influence of genetics, environment, and lifestyle on CKD. Risk factors such as obesity and sleep apnea are associated with increased CKD incidence, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis.

Summary: This study analyzed the prevalence, incidence, and disability burden of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) worldwide using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. The overall age-standardized estimates of ASD remained stable globally from 1990 to 2019, but the prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) increased in high socio-demographic index (SDI) countries. In contrast, the age-standardized incidence decreased in some low SDI countries, indicating a need for improved awareness. The male/female ratio decreased over time, possibly due to increased attention to ASD in females.

Summary: Globally, silicosis accounts for 90% of all pneumoconiosis cases and is a serious public health issue. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the disease burden of silicosis from 1990 to 2019 using the most updated data from GBD 2019, including incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), as well as age-standardized rates (ASRs). Projections for the next 10 years were also made.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence, incidence, and burden of gout in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from 2005 to 2014, finding that gout prevalence was highest among men, older patients, and non-Hispanic black patients. The burden of gout in the VHA is considerable and increased during the study period, with stable rates of urate-lowering therapy but an increase in opioid therapy among gout patients.

Summary: In the United States, there has been a consistent gradual decline in Kaposi sarcoma (KS) incidence among people with HIV (PWH) during the current cART era. This decrease is uniform across key demographic and HIV transmission groups, though rates remain elevated relative to the general population.

Summary: The study estimated the prevalence, incidence, and economic burden of schizophrenia among Medicaid beneficiaries, finding variation by state but stability over time. Adults with schizophrenia incurred significantly higher healthcare costs and resource utilization compared to controls, with a similar burden seen among young adults.

Summary: Data on ADHD incidence, prevalence, and burden from the Global Burden of Disease study from 1990 to 2019 were presented. The study found that the global age-standardized incidence and prevalence of ADHD were 0.061% and 1.13% respectively in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, there was a decrease in global age-standardized prevalence and incidence. Males had approximately 2.5 times higher incidence, prevalence, and burden compared to females.

Summary: The study found that low birthweight was inversely correlated with albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) and directly correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), leading to increased incidence and progression of kidney disease. Low birthweight also amplified the effects of other risk factors such as higher body mass indexes and a history of poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) on kidney disease.

Summary: This study aimed to update estimates of the incidence correction factor to improve programme planning and inform the approach to burden estimation for severe wasting. Results show that incidence correction factors vary between sites and the currently recommended incidence correction factor of 1.6 may often underestimate the burden of severe wasting.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a global public health issue, with African countries disproportionately affected. The CKD-Africa Collaboration has gathered data from 39 studies in 12 African countries, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Challenges in building the network were faced, managed, and showed the benefits of collaboration for Africa. Lessons learned can be applied to public health research in LMICs.
