Summary: The study investigated HIV drug resistance among ART-naive and ART-experienced individuals in Africa, revealing a high burden of HIV drug resistance among those on failing ART regimens, potentially limiting the efficacy of standard first- and second-line regimens. Management strategies emphasizing adherence counseling while delaying ART switch may promote drug resistance and should be reconsidered.

Summary: This study investigated the aetiology, presentation, and treatment outcomes of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in adults at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. The study found that Mycobacterium tuberculosis was the most common cause of CAP in this population, followed by gram-negative organisms. The study also reported a high 30-day mortality rate.

Summary: Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis is considered a top AIDS-defining illness in South America, with limited reported experience in children. This study in Ecuador found that clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in children living with HIV and PDH are similar to those in adults, with low CD4 cell count being a significant risk factor.

Summary: This case study presents a 35-year-old male patient with both HIV infection and concomitant SLE, highlighting the challenges in choosing treatment strategies for these two conditions that involve conflicting immunological responses. Rheumatologists in Japan should consider the possibility of HIV infection when diagnosing autoimmune diseases, especially given the relatively low prevalence of HIV in the country.

Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) is the major cause of illness, hospitalization, and death in individuals living with HIV (PLWH). The decrease in CD4+ T-lymphocyte count during HIV infection increases the risk of active TB and atypical clinical and radiologic presentation. This case emphasizes the importance of screening for HIV in patients with newly diagnosed TB.

Summary: This study investigated 181 HIV-infected female cross-border travelers entering Yunnan province, and found that CRF01_AE was the dominant subtype, with significant differences in subtype distribution compared to intravenous drug users and unknown groups. Genetic distances of subtype B, C, and CRF01_AE strains were close to reference sequences from Yunnan province and Southeast Asian countries.

Summary: Both myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and long COVID (LC) share similar immunological alterations, chronic viral infection, autoimmunity, inflammation, viral reactivation, hypocortisolism, and microclot formation. They also have similar symptoms including fatigue, exercise intolerance, sleep disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and neurological and gastrointestinal complaints. Furthermore, both diseases show Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation, suggesting a potential link between them.

Summary: China has made progress in combating HIV/AIDS, including measures such as legislation and widespread nucleic acid testing to prevent infections and providing free ART treatment. In the future, efforts should focus on controlling the spread through sexual transmission, closing the gap in identifying HIV cases, and ensuring the long-term effectiveness and safety of ART.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability and validity of a Salty Food Frequency Questionnaire and a Discretionary Salt Questionnaire developed for the French-Canadian population, demonstrating that these tools are reliable and showed some facets of validity. Results showed that the FFQ-Na had correlations with 24 h urine sodium excretion and 3-day food records, while the DSQ did not show significant correlations with the reference measures.

Summary: This study aims to describe a mobile phone app intervention to promote healthy salt intake among adults. The study consists of three modules, including intervention planning, app development, and randomized controlled study evaluation. The results of this study are expected to help control salt intake when cooking at home, stimulate self-care, and serve as an alternative or supportive method in the relationship between health care professionals and patients.

Summary: Self-report instruments are commonly used to measure medication adherence but are influenced by factors like social desirability and memory bias. To address this, the Global Assessment of Medication Adherence Instrument (GEMA) was developed. This study evaluated the properties of GEMA in patients with chronic diseases and found that GEMA had good acceptability, evidence of specificity, and low sensitivity in identifying non-adherents among those with unstable international normalized ratio (INR).
