Changes of nest mass in relation to nesting stages in the Great Tit Parus major

Iga Harnist, Anna Dubiec, Tomasz D. Mazgajski

Summary: The nest mass of Great Tits increases over the nesting cycle, with the increase correlated with brood size. The fresh nest mass is correlated with dry nest mass, and the variation in nest mass is associated with clutch or brood size.

Summary: The lack of standards and networking programmes significantly hinders the integration and synthesis of data in various scientific fields. Long-term studies of individually marked animals play a crucial role in understanding evolutionary and ecological processes in the wild. The SPI-Birds Network and Database have been established to address data integration issues and enable a new scale of ecological and evolutionary research based on long-term studies of birds.

Phylogeography of a widespread Palaearctic forest bird species: The White-backed Woodpecker (Aves, Picidae)

Jean-Marc Pons, David Campion, Giorgio Chiozzi, Antonia Ettwein, Jean-Louis Grange, Lukasz Kajtoch, Tomasz D. Mazgajski, Marko Rakovic, Hans Winkler, Jerome Fuchs

Summary: A study on the White-backed Woodpecker using multilocus molecular data and species distribution modelling revealed genetic differentiation among subspecies and discussed the colonization history of the Japanese archipelago. The results suggest a historical split between the leucotos and lilfordi lineages and a possible eastward population expansion from a glacial refugium in Central Europe.

Climatic conditions and prevalence of melanistic snakes-contrasting effects of warm springs and mild winters

Stanislaw Bury, Aleksandra Kolanek, Przemyslaw Chylarecki, Bartlomiej Najbar, Katarzyna Kurek, Tomasz D. Mazgajski

Summary: Climate change poses a significant challenge to wildlife, impacting the prevalence of different phenotypes in populations. This study found that the prevalence of black individuals in a grass snake population was negatively correlated with spring temperature and winter harshness. These findings suggest that warmer springs can diminish the advantage of black individuals due to increased predation rates, while colder springs favor their performance. Additionally, smaller melanistic individuals face a higher risk of winter mortality, especially during longer winters.
