Background:Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents a growing medical and epidemiological problem. In respect to patients, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) emerged as informative means to evaluate the impact of disease burden on health. The Short Health Scale (SHS), a disease-specific HRQOL instrument with only 4 questions (symptoms, functioning, worry, and general well-being), was demonstrated as valid, reliable, and responsive in adults. Aim of this study was to assess its psychometric properties in children with IBD.Methods:In a multicentric prospective study, HRQOL was assessed in 104 children with IBD by generic (PedsQL) and disease-specific questionnaires (IMPACT-III (HR) and SHS), which were cross-culturally adapted for Croatian. Forty-one patients completed the questionnaires at the second visit 6 to 12 months later. Of them, 27 patients changed from remission to active disease or vice versa and were included in responsiveness to change analysis. Results:Patients in remission had significantly better scores for symptoms (P = 0.022) and functioning (P = 0.003) than those with active disease. Each of the 4 SHS questions was strongly correlated with the corresponding dimensions of PedsQL and IMPACT-III (HR) questionnaires (r(s) = 0.50-0.72, P < 0.001). Reliability was confirmed with Cronbach's = 0.74. Patients who changed from remission to active disease or vice versa showed significant change in following SHS scores: symptoms (P = 0.032), functioning (P = 0.008), and worry (P = 0.021).Conclusions:SHS appears to be valid, reliable, and responsive tool to measure HRQOL in children with IBD. Simplicity of use, compactness, and the possibility of immediate interpretation make SHS well suited for both clinical practice and research studies.

Striatal Dopaminergic Deficit and Sleep in Idiopathic Rapid Eye Movement Behaviour Disorder: An Explorative Study

Danielle Wasserman, Dorothea Bindman, Alexander D. Nesbitt, Diana Cash, Milan Milosevic, Paul T. Francis, K. Ray Chaudhuri, Guy D. Leschziner, Luigi Ferini-Strambi, Clive Ballard, Amy Eccles, Ivana Rosenzweig

Summary: The study found that patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) exhibited an increased number of periodic limb movements during sleep compared to healthy controls. It also revealed significant associations between striatal dopamine transporter uptake and sleep architecture, indicating that dopamine deficiency in the caudate nucleus may affect sleep quality.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the rate of transient acute hydrocephalus in patients with aSAH treated endovascularly and evaluate its predictive factors. A new risk score, DOTAHAS score, was constructed to differentiate patients with TAH from those needing surgical interventions. The study identified older age, poor initial clinical condition, aSAH from posterior circulation, and extent of hemorrhage as independent risk factors for acute hydrocephalus. Patients with higher DOTAHAS scores had a significantly higher risk for external ventricular drainage placement. Further evaluation of the score is needed.

Bone morphogenetic protein 1.3 inhibition decreases scar formation and supports cardiomyocyte survival after myocardial infarction

Summary: This study demonstrates that the inhibition of the specific isoform of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 1 (BMP1.3) by a monoclonal antibody can reduce cardiac fibrosis and provide cardioprotection through inhibiting the Transforming Growth Factor beta pathway and inducing BMP5. It suggests the therapeutic potential of anti-BMP1.3 antibodies in preventing cardiomyocyte apoptosis, reducing collagen deposition, and preserving cardiac function after ischemia.

Summary: This research evaluated the usefulness of serum calprotectin (sCal) as a biomarker for urinary tract infection (UTI). The results showed that sCal levels were significantly higher in children with bacterial UTI compared to those with viral respiratory infection, indicating the potential of sCal as a biomarker for distinguishing between these two conditions in febrile children.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency and factors affecting the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and dietary supplements among pediatric cancer patients in Croatia. Results showed that half of the participants used CAM, and more than two-thirds used dietary supplements. Herbal medicine, vitamins, and minerals were among the most commonly used items. It is important to raise awareness about the use of CAM and dietary supplements in pediatric oncology patients to predict and mitigate side effects.

ANALYSIS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN NON-ERGONOMIC POSITION OF UPPER BODY SEGMENTS AND MUSCULOSKELETAL HEALTH IN BUS DRIVERS

Martina Mavrin Jelicic, Milan Milosevic, Nikola Prlenda

Summary: The aim of this study is to determine whether physical activity levels may play a role in mediating the relationship between non-ergonomic body position and musculoskeletal health in professional bus drivers. The study found that the majority of participants reported musculoskeletal pain, with a significant proportion being at high risk for musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, physical activity level was found to mediate the relationship between non-ergonomic body position and musculoskeletal health.
