The eastern Qiulitagh fold and thrust belt (EQFTB) is part of the active Kuqa fold and thrust belts of the northern Tarim Basin. Seismic reflection profiles have been integrated with surface geologic and drill data to examine the deformation and structure style of the EQFTB, particularly the deformational history of the Dina 2 gas field. Seismic interpretations suggest that Dongqiu 8 is overall a duplex structure developed beneath a passive roof thrust, which generated from a tipline in the Miocene Jidike Formation, and the sole thrust was initiated from the same Jidike Formation evaporite zone that extends westward beneath the Kuqatawu anticline. Dongqiu 5 is a pop-up structure at the western part of the EQFTB, also developed beneath the Jidike Formation evaporite. Very gentle basement dip and steep dipping topographic slope in the EQFTB suggest that the Jidike Formation salt provides effective decoupling. The strong deformation in the EQFTB appears to have developed further south, in an area where evaporite may be lacking. Since the Pliocene, the EQFTB has moved farther south over the evaporite and reached the Yaken area. Restoring a balanced cross-section suggests that the minimum shortening across the EQFTB is more than 7800 m. Assuming that this shortening occurred during the 5.3 Ma timespan, the shortening rate is approximately 1.47 mm/year.

Experimental Investigation on Supercritical Water Gasification of Organic-Rich Shale with Low Maturity for Syngas Production

Xinping Liang, Qiuyang Zhao, Yu Dong, Liejin Guo, Zhijun Jin, Quanyou Liu

Summary: The study found that temperature and time are the dominant factors affecting gas yield and selectivity, with increasing temperature promoting endothermic reactions and accelerating the water-gas shift reaction. Pressure increase has a less negative but negligible effect on gasification. In general, carbon gasification efficiency and hydrogen selectivity first increase and then stabilize when the reaction time is prolonged, and the water-shale mass ratio is increased and (or) the shale particle size is decreased.

Three-Dimensional Morphology and Connectivity of Organic Pores in Shale from the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations at the Southeast Sichuan Basin in China

Tao Jiang, Zhijun Jin, Zongquan Hu, Wei Du, Zhongbao Liu, Jianhua Zhao

Summary: The study investigated the types and characteristics of organic pores in shale formations, revealing that organic pores are mainly concentrated in highly matured shale with three main types: algae, graptolite, and pyrobitumen. The connectivity of organic pores is better in shale with high organic content, which plays a crucial role in shale gas migration.

Sedimentary Evolution Characteristics of Fine-Grained Lithofacies under the High-Resolution Isochronous Shelf System: Insights from the Wufeng-Longmaxi Shales in the Sichuan Basin

Guanping Wang, Zhijun Jin, Zongquan Hu, Guangxiang Liu, Tong Zhu, Wei Du, Hongliang Wang, Jing Wu

Summary: This study investigated the fine-grained deposition and evolution characteristics of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales, key targets for Chinese shale gas exploration. The research accurately identified favorable lithofacies for shale gas exploration and discussed the differential evolution of lithofacies in the sedimentary system tract. The study is significant for further exploration of marine shale and improvement of the theory of shelf fine-grained sedimentary systems.

Hydrothermal catalytic conversion and metastable equilibrium of organic compounds in the Jinding Zn/Pb ore deposit

Huiyuan Xu, Quanyou Liu, Dongya Zhu, Qingqiang Meng, Zhijun Jin, Qi Fu, Simon C. George

Summary: Laboratory experiments have established hydrothermal organic reactions in the presence of mineral catalysts, but little is known about hydrothermal catalytic conversion (HTCC) and the existence of complex molecules in continental hydrothermal systems. Evidence from natural subsurface samples shows a wide range of mineral catalysis of polycyclic aromatic compounds, with a stepwise interaction of organic compounds with metal bearing hydrothermal fluids. This study suggests that various phenyl/sulfur/oxygen-containing compounds are metastable equilibrium products of complex redox reactions under specific hydrothermal conditions.

Astronomical time scale of a Middle Eocene lacustrine sequence from the Dongpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China

Dong Guo, Zhijun Jin

Summary: Located in the SW part of the Bohai Bay Basin, the Dongpu Sag is rich in oil and gas, with the main source rock found in the third member (Es3) of the Middle Eocene Shahejie Formation. Due to the complex geology of the area, the stratigraphic subdivision and deposition timing of each member and sub-member in the Shahejie Formation is challenging and controversial. By establishing a high-resolution cyclostratigraphic framework, the study provides a more precise time interval to locate the effective source rocks in the sag and allows for fine-scale stratigraphic correlation within the region and beyond.

Xiaoping Liu, Zhijun Jin, Jin Lai, Xuechun Fan, Ming Guan, Honglin Shu, Gaocheng Wang, Mengcai Liu, Yufeng Luo

Summary: Fluorescence thin section and SEM were used to analyze pore spaces of oil shales, while NMR T-2 spectra and fractal analysis were applied to investigate pore size distribution and fractal dimensions. The results showed the complex pore assemblages in oil shales and the correlation between fractal dimensions and NMR parameters.

Proper Experimental Parameters in N2 Adsorption: The Effects of Data Points and Equilibrium Interval Time

Kouqi Liu, Zhijun Jin, Natalia Zakharova, Lianbo Zeng, Adedoyin Adeyilola, Mehdi Ostadhassan

Summary: The pore structures of shale samples can be accurately evaluated through adsorption experiments. Proper experimental parameters, such as the number of test points and equilibrium interval time, are crucial for obtaining reliable results. Ignoring these parameters may lead to inaccurate pore structure information. It is important to choose appropriate experimental parameters rather than using default values for meaningful pore structure analysis.

Laminar characteristics of lacustrine organic-rich shales and their significance for shale reservoir formation: A case study of the Paleogene shales in the Dongying Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Juye Shi, Zhijun Jin, Quanyou Liu, Tan Zhang, Tailiang Fan, Zhiqian Gao

Summary: Exploration of shale oil in China has shown that laminated shales are favorable lithofacies for effective shale oil production. A study on Paleogene organic-rich shales in the Dongying Sag, Bohai Bay Basin revealed two categories and six types of laminar structures, with those having high laminar continuity exhibiting better reservoir and oil-bearing properties compared to those with poor continuity. Shales with thick parallel and wavy laminar structures were found to have favorable petrophysical parameters for shale oil exploration in the area.

Developmental characteristics and formational stages of natural fractures in the Wufeng - Longmaxi Formation in the Sangzhi Block, Hunan Province, China: Insights from fracture cements and fluid inclusions studies

Gang Zhao, Zhijun Jin, Wenlong Ding, Guangxiang Liu, Jinbiao Yun, Ruyue Wang, Guanping Wang

Summary: The study on fractures in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in Hunan Province reveals that these fractures can be divided into different types based on their combination characteristics and roughness. The fractures mainly occurred in the late Yanshanian-Himalayan period and experienced repeated processes of splitting, healing, and re-splitting. The gas migration and enrichment in these fractures play a key role in the distribution and preservation of shale gas.
