Carbocatalytic Cascade Synthesis of Polysubstituted Quinolines from Aldehydes and 2-Vinyl Anilines

Mikko K. Makela, Evgeny Bulatov, Kiia Malinen, Juulia Talvitie, Martin Nieger, Michele Melchionna, Anna Lenarda, Tao Hu, Tom Wirtanen, Juho Helaja

Summary: Oxidized active carbon catalyzes the formation of polysubstituted quinolines through a cascade manner involving condensation, electrocyclization, and dehydrogenation, allowing access to a wide range of quinolines. The metal-free catalytic procedure provides a heterogeneous protocol for the synthesis of various polysubstituted quinolines, with mechanistic studies indicating the importance of acid and quinoidic groups in oAC for the catalytic reaction.

Noncovalent Axial I...Pt....I Interactions in Platinum(II) Complexes Strengthen in the Excited State

Evgeny Bulatov, Toni Eskelinen, Alexander Yu. Ivanov, Peter M. Tolstoy, Elina Kalenius, Pipsa Hirva, Matti Haukka

Summary: Coordination compounds of platinum(II) can engage in various noncovalent axial interactions involving the metal center, with simultaneous axial interactions with two nucleophilic ligands being almost unprecedented. Structural and computational studies show that these interactions are weak, dispersive, and anti-cooperative in the ground state, but substantially strengthen and become partially covalent and cooperative in the lowest excited state. The strengthening of I...Pt...I contacts in the excited state is also predicted for the only previously reported complex with analogous axial interactions.

The impact of the molecular structure on aggregation and solid state luminescence of 2,3-diarylfumaronitriles

Summary: This work investigates the substituent effect in 2,3-diarylfumaronitriles on optical properties and intermolecular interactions in the solid state. The study reveals that non-covalent bonds, such as N C···N C, C-H···Cl, and C-H···N C interactions, influence the solid-state luminescent properties of molecules, affecting electronic communication between molecules.

Phenanthrenequinone-Sensitized Photocatalytic Synthesis of Polysubstituted Quinolines from 2-Vinylarylimines

Juulia Talvitie, Iida Alanko, Evgeny Bulatov, Juho Koivula, Topias Pollanen, Juho Helaja

Summary: By using visible-light-excited 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ*) as a photocatalyst, polysubstituted quinolines were successfully synthesized via the electrocyclization of 2-vinylarylimines. Experimental results showed that quantitative yields of 2,4-disubstituted quinolines could be obtained in a short period of time under blue LEDs excitation with the presence of MgCO3.

Binding of ion pairs and neutral guests by aryl-extended meso -p-hydroxyphenyl calix[4]pyrrole: The interplay between three binding sites

Malgorzata Pamula, Evgeny Bulatov, Kaisa Helttunen

Summary: In this study, an aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole with four meso-p-hydroxyphenyl substituents was used as a host molecule for chloride, acetate, and benzoate anions. Experimental results showed that chloride ions form hydrogen bonds with the upper rim hydroxyl groups, and the aromatic cations are bound to the shallow cavity of the host. Additionally, a dimeric capsule was formed by the inclusion of adiponitrile guest in the endo-cavity binding site. NMR titrations revealed that the host preferentially binds anionic guests in solution, with benzoate anion exhibiting the highest binding constant in acetonitrile. Density functional theory calculations indicated the preference of the exo-cavity complex with chloride anions over the endo-cavity complex, while the energies of the endo- and exo-cavity benzoate complexes were similar.

Hydration of Propargyl Esters Catalyzed by Gold(I) Complexes with Phosphoramidite Calix[4]pyrrole Cavitands as Ligands

Andres F. Sierra, Evgeny Bulatov, Gemma Aragay, Pablo Ballester

Summary: We report the synthesis and characterization of two diastereomeric phosphoramidite calix[4]pyrrole cavitands and their corresponding gold(I) complexes. The catalytic activity of these complexes in the hydration reaction of propargyl esters was studied. The presence of polar hydrogen bond acceptor groups in the substrate was found to decrease the hydration rate constants, possibly due to coordination competition with the Au(I) metal center of the catalysts.

Synthesis, Photo- and Electroluminescence of New Polyfluorene Copolymers Containing Dicyanostilbene and 9,10-Dicyanophenanthrene in the Main Chain

Anton A. Yakimanskiy, Ksenia I. Kaskevich, Elena V. Zhukova, Ivan A. Berezin, Larisa S. Litvinova, Tatiana G. Chulkova, Dmitriy A. Lypenko, Artem V. Dmitriev, Sergey I. Pozin, Natalia V. Nekrasova, Felix N. Tomilin, Daria A. Ivanova, Alexander V. Yakimansky

Summary: Using palladium-catalyzed Suzuki polycondensation, new light-emitting fluorene copolymers containing dicyano derivatives were synthesized and characterized. The synthesized polymers showed significant energy transfer, as confirmed by theoretical calculations. OLEDs based on these polymers exhibited yellow-green luminescence for copolymers with dicyanostilbene and greenish-blue emission for polymers with 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene. The device with 2.5 mol% of 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene showed a maximum brightness of 9230 cd/m2 and a maximum current efficiency of 3.33 cd/A.
