Summary: A cis-dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complex has been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The crystal structure of the complex was determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The synthesized complex exhibits catalytic potential for the oxidation of sulfides, yielding sulfoxides and sulfones in high yields and short reaction times.

Summary: Aryl Schiff base hydrazone can form stable complexes with transition metals, which have various applications in catalysis and biology. Mononuclear pincer complexes of high valent metal ions (MoO22+, UO22+, and VO2+) with aryl Schiff base hydrazone ligand (H2Lhz) were synthesized and characterized. The catalytic potential of these complexes was evaluated in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and the inhibitory activity against microbes and cancer cells was examined. The results showed that the complexes displayed high catalytic activity and inhibitory potential, indicating their importance in catalysis and biochemistry.

Summary: A series of five novel Mn-salen-based compounds (1a-1c, 2a, 2b) were synthesized through the reaction between precursor chloride complexes and potassium silver/gold dicyanide. The compounds were structurally and magnetically characterized. The findings revealed that the Mn(III) central atoms exhibited axial magnetic anisotropy, and weak magnetic exchange was observed in compounds with a special supramolecular topology involving O-H···O hydrogen-bonded dimers.

Summary: A dual-mode chemosensor based on phenanthroline dicarbohydrazide (L) was synthesized for selective and sensitive monitoring of Zr4+. The sensor showed selective distinct colorimetric response and a turn-on fluorescence when interacting with Zr4+ in DMSO:water (8:2, v/v) media. The sensor could form 1:2 stoichiometric complex with Zr4+ and work in a wide pH range of 3 to 8, with a LOD of 180 nM and 9 nM by UV-visible and spectrofluorometric analysis respectively.

Summary: In this study, the transformation of Ca-containing whewellite into hydroxyapatite nanorods derived from steel slag leaching solution was achieved. Fe(III)-bearing hydroxyapatite was then prepared through cation exchange and showed excellent photoreduction performance on Cr(VI) with the assistance of oxalic acid under visible light irradiation. This work provides a novel strategy for the high-efficient utilization of waste materials in wastewater purification applications.

Summary: Cr(VI) in soils and groundwater is primarily derived from the oxidation of geogenic Cr(III) minerals rather than direct emissions. The oxidation of Cr(III) is mainly facilitated by Mn oxides in anoxic soils and by O-2 in oxic soils. The presence of Mn oxides promotes the oxidative dissolution of chromite even under anoxic conditions. The form of Cr, the abundance of Mn oxides, and the presence of reducing agents control the content of Cr(VI) in soil.

Summary: By studying the absorptance spectra of nanometer-thin layers of various semiconductors, researchers have found that the optical absorptance exhibits similar characteristics to graphene, with marked plateaus at integer values of pi alpha. This quantization of absorptance is universal in semiconductor quantum wells, as long as excitonic effects are weak, and is not specific to graphene. The physical origin of this universality is explained using analytical models, which show that the absorptance is ruled by pi alpha independent of the material characteristics.

Summary: The reactions of [(thf)(2)TiCl4] with sodiated 2,2'-bis[2-hydroxy-3,5-di(tert-butyl)benzylideneamino]-1,1'-biphenyl (1 a) and 2,2'-bis[2-hydroxy-3,5-di(tert-butyl)benzylideneamino]-4,4'-dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl (1 b) yield the corresponding Ti complexes 2 a and 2 b. Similarly, 1 a reacts with [(thf)(2)ZrCl4] to the corresponding Zr derivative 3. For 2 a, a mixture of cis-beta and trans isomers were observed in solution whereas the Zr congener exclusively forms the cis-alpha form. Quantum chemical calculations verify that these isomers are the preferred molecular structures. The crystal structures of cis-beta isomeric 2 a and cis-alpha isomeric 3 have been determined. Metalation of 1 a with Ti(NMe2)(4) yields 2,2'-bis[(2-oxido-3,5-di(tert-butyl)phenyl)-dimethylaminomethylamino]-1,1'-biphenyl titanium(IV) (4) with a hexadentate ligand.

Summary: Microbial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) forms soluble Cr(III) with certain thermal stability and mobility. However, high temperature treatment may reduce the concentration of soluble Cr(III). Higher pH promotes the mobility of soluble Cr(III) but also increases environmental risks.
