The area evaluated in this study was a continuous stretch comprising three vegetation formations: gallery forest, semideciduous seasonal forest and cerradao (woodland savanna). The aim of this study was to examine the tree community dynamics in a forest gradient-from gallery forest to cerradao-at Panga Ecological Station, in the city of Uberlandia, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study was based on data from a previous inventory of the continuous forest conducted in 211 permanent 10 x 10 m sample plots in eight parallel transect running perpendicular to Panga Creek. Trees with a diameter at breast height >= 4.77 cm were sampled in 1997, 2002 and 2007. With the exception of the cerradao, there was a net reduction in tree density over the studied period of ten years, because mortality rates were higher than the recruitment rates. The basal area increased during the period of the study, especially at cerradao. The mean mortality rate in the studied area was 2.64%. yr(-1) and 3.36%. yr(-1) for the 1997-2002 and 2002-2007 periods, respectively, whereas the mean recruitment rate was 1.76%. yr(-1) and 1.97%. yr(-1), respectively. In general, mortality rates and recruitment rates have increased during the two successive periods of measurement and showed an imbalance in favor of mortality for the semideciduous seasonal forest and the gallery forest. This fact, added to the low density and high basal area, suggest that there was a process of thinning in the tree community. However, at cerradao, there was an imbalance in favor of recruitment, with a consequent increase in density and basal area, indicating that the cerradao is in a construction phase, which was further favored by a decrease in the occurrence of fire and other anthropogenic disturbances. When the turnover rates are taken into consideration, the global dynamics of the study area over the ten years evaluated can be expressed as cerradao > semideciduous seasonal forest > gallery forest.

Summary: This study used nanoscale AFM-IR spectroscopy to investigate the structure of Aβ oligomers and fibrils. It found that the main effect of beta-carotene is not to inhibit fibril formation, but to alter the secondary structure of the fibrils and promote fibrils that lack the characteristic ordered beta structure.

Summary: Research has found that snakebite envenomations are a significant problem for indigenous populations in the Brazilian Amazon. However, little research has been conducted on how indigenous peoples access and utilize the health system for snakebite treatment. The study suggests that decentralizing antivenom to local health units and providing additional resources can improve patient care, while further research is needed on preparing healthcare professionals to work in intercultural contexts.

Summary: This study reviews current information regarding different ultrasound techniques in the evaluation of mammary tumors, highlighting that elastography is the most reliable technique to distinguish benign and malignant tumors. Furthermore, other sonographic techniques provide important information for clinical staging and therapeutic approach, and further studies are needed to evaluate their potential.

Prescribed fire application in a Brazilian mountain environment: Changes in soil organic matter quality in the short and medium term

Yan Vidal de Figueiredo Gomes Diniz, Ana Paula Pessim de Oliveira, Tiago Paula da Silva, Eduardo Carvalho da Silva Neto, Andres Calderin Garcia, Marcos Gervasio Pereira, Marcelo Souza Motta, Hugo de Souza Fagundes, Otavio Augusto Queiroz dos Santos, Lucia Helena Cunha dos Anjos

Summary: This study aimed to quantify and characterize the impact of prescribed fire (PF) on soil organic matter in Itatiaia National Park. The results showed that within 10 days after the fire, the release of labile organic carbon resulted in an increase in humic fractions in the soil. However, it took more than 240 days for the soil to restore the levels of carbon and nitrogen stocks.

Summary: Local populations select different plants to meet their demands, and morphologically similar species are more commonly used. This study investigates whether phylogenetically closer plant species are used more similarly and finds that they are. The lower redundancy for some species suggests greater use pressure.

Giftedness and YouTube® livestream in the pandemic period: a systematic review

Amanda Rodrigues de Souza, Ana Paula Santos de Oliveira, Rosemeire de Araujo Rangni

Summary: Livestreams became highly popular during the pandemic period, particularly in discussing topics related to giftedness, which attracted significant academic interest. This article presents a systematic review on livestreams about giftedness on YouTube during the pandemic period (2020-2022). The findings included 22 videos covering introductory themes on giftedness as well as other topics such as parenting, acceleration, mathematics, giftedness and autism, and over-excitability. Overall, even though introductory themes were more common, livestreams played a crucial role in providing information to teachers and professionals, even those already familiar with the subject.

Summary: The recognition and use of food resources in animal species may vary according to availability. Dung beetle species feed from a wide range of food resources, including feces, carrion, and rotten fruit. The study aimed to assess the attractiveness and preference of different food types for dung beetles in Campinarana. The results showed that the diet of dung beetles dwelling in Campinaranas is relatively strict, with species being attracted mostly to carrion or feces, regardless of the availability of other food types.
