Summary: A dual-functional coating based on synthetic terpolymers was developed to combat implant-associated infection caused by bacterial biofilm formation. The coating exhibited strong bactericidal efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and effectively inhibited biofilm formation. In addition, the coating showed reduced protein and platelet absorption and minimal cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the coating eradicated pathogenic biofilm, preventing tissue damage and inflammation.

Summary: The study demonstrates the application of a 20 MHz frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) in a solid substrate to achieve self-cleaning surface and redirect the deposition of precipitates onto another substrate. The use of hydrophobic coating on the glass surface results in selective deposition of polymer, indicating the success of the experiment in achieving self-cleaning surface.

Summary: The research focuses on depositing two layers of silica particles with different sizes and one layer of perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane on ceramic surfaces to achieve a self-cleaning characteristic. The coated surfaces exhibit improved resistance against stains and the experimental results are statistically analyzed and numerically optimized.

Summary: The study introduced a unique liquid-like coating with high repellency and durability for food containers, without the need for detergents. It effectively prevents the adhesion of various liquid foods and inhibits biofilm formation, displaying high biocompatibility and mechanical resistance. This versatile coating offers potential benefits for human and environmental health by reducing residue contamination and detergent use.

Summary: Nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC) was modified with an aqueous alkaline solution of 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTMAC) to confer it with antimicrobial properties. The modified NFBC showed similar fiber morphologies and crystal structures to pristine NFBC, indicating that EPTMAC selectively reacted with the surface hydroxyl groups of NFBC. The modified nanofibers demonstrated antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, likely due to the positive charge on the surface of the modified NFBC.

Summary: The rapid accumulation of dead bacteria or protein on a bactericidal surface can reduce its effectiveness and alter its biocidal activity. Therefore, developing a self-cleaning surface is crucial. In this project, a sugar-responsive self-cleaning coating has been developed, which can kill attached microbials and release dead cells and foulants.

Summary: A self-cleaning Fe/TiO2 surface coating was prepared on a ceramic substrate using the cold spray method based on sol-gel and hydrothermal processes. The effect of spraying operation conditions on the coated layer thickness was investigated using a numerical method. The results showed that the pressure, traverse speed, and standoff distance influenced the thickness of the coating. The proposed optimum condition exhibited good performance in photocatalytic and antibacterial tests.

Summary: Coating is a protective layer made from polymer resins that cover and protect the substrate surface. Inorganic additives are commonly used in coating applications to enhance properties, but they contain toxic heavy metals. Research is now focusing on using plant extracts as natural additives due to their non-toxic and environmentally friendly properties.

Summary: Amplified hygiene and precautionary measures are necessary to control COVID-19, but may lead to increased use and discharge of disinfectants, particularly quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). This review discusses the classification and mechanism of disinfectants, with a focus on QACs, and highlights the occurrence, fate, toxicity, and antimicrobial resistance associated with QACs. Evidence shows a significant rise in the mass load of QACs at wastewater treatment plants and higher concentrations in residential dust during the pandemic, posing potential risks to human health and the environment.
