Summary: A recent study reveals that hornets in tropical forests of China are attracted to fruits of Aquilaria sinensis by volatile compounds that resemble those produced by herbivore-damaged leaves. The hornets disperse the short-lived seeds quickly to optimal new habitats.

Summary: Antarctica is crucial for Earth's climate, oceanic circulation, and global ecosystem, but extreme conditions and isolation hinder comprehensive understanding. This research demonstrates the feasibility of using UAVs as efficient tools for environmental and wildlife research in Antarctica, presenting a method to study various processes in the region.

Summary: The popularity of online shopping is increasing, but the presence of fake product reviews has the potential to influence consumer behavior. Previous studies have developed automated techniques to detect fake reviews, but their success varies and the reasons for differences are unclear. In this study, the impact of data-origin and product ownership on fake review detection is investigated. The findings suggest that review veracity is somewhat detectable, but reviews with confounding factors are easier to classify. These findings highlight the importance of considering multiple factors in fake review detection.

Summary: Asking unexpected questions, asking the interviewee to sketch the room, and asking the interviewee to make a timeline are techniques that have been shown to help detect deceit. However, the efficacy of these techniques may vary across cultural backgrounds. Two experiments were conducted with migrants to the UK, and while there were no effects of veracity, cultural differences in the outcome variables were observed, highlighting the importance of considering different countries and cultures in lie detection research.

Summary: Investigating the cooperativity of interlocutors is crucial for studying the pragmatics of dialogue. However, models that assume only cooperative agents fail to explain the dynamics of strategic conversations. Thus, this study examines the agents' ability to identify non-cooperative interlocutors while completing a concurrent visual-dialogue task and analyzes different communication strategies for achieving this objective.

Summary: The General Theory of Deception (GTD) is a comprehensive framework that aims to unify and complete the various theories proposed in deception literature, providing a full description of the process of producing deceptive messages and enhancing prevention and detection. The authors identified and named 99 elementary deception modes through tracking different ways people elaborate deceptive messages. The core of GTD is the five forces model, explaining when and why deceptive messages occur. Additionally, the deception decision algorithm (DDA) describes the process of generating and comparing deceptive messages.

Summary: Professional fact-checkers and fact-checking organizations play an important role in providing a critical public service. However, there are concerns about the accuracy and objectivity of these fact-checkers. This study examined the agreement between two independent fact-checkers, The Washington Post and PolitiFact, on false and misleading statements made by former President Donald J. Trump.

Summary: Transgender individuals face high levels of prejudice in interpersonal relationships, particularly when they do not voluntarily disclose their identity. This study examines the impact of intentional and unintentional identity disclosure on negative attitudes, perceived deception, and distrust towards transgender individuals. The results show that transgender targets elicit greater levels of prejudice and are viewed as more deceptive, especially if their identity is not intentionally revealed. These findings have implications for reducing prejudice towards binary transgender individuals who choose not to disclose their identity.

Summary: Lying is crucial for social communication but detecting lies remains challenging. We investigated the cognitive abilities of effective liars and found that only fluid intelligence is associated with reliable lying. This relationship is only evident for oral statements, suggesting the importance of intelligence in spontaneous lying.

Summary: This paper proposes an adaptive fuzzy output feedback control scheme for addressing a class of unknown nonlinear systems with sensor attacks. Fuzzy logic systems are utilized to approximate the uncertain nonlinearities, and the backstepping technique is employed to construct controllers. By using a Nussbaum function to handle the unknown output feedback coefficient in the first step of backstepping design, an adaptive controller is developed to accommodate sensor attacks. Compared to current control schemes, the proposed adaptive controller can be applied to nonlinear systems with both uncertainty and unmeasurable states. Two examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Summary: Sympathy sockpuppets are false online identities used to extract care work from others. This more subtle form of online deception, compared to scams and trolling, is not well understood and its impacts on individuals and communities have not been fully articulated. Research suggests that online community managers and members need to be aware of and take measures to address this form of deception.
