Summary: This study analyzed the data on Influenza-associated hospitalizations, costs, and risk factors in Germany during a ten-year period. The findings showed that Influenza poses a substantial economic burden in Germany, with the highest costs among elderly individuals and patients with underlying risk factors. Furthermore, middle-aged adults also experience a considerable disease burden.

Summary: This study examined the temporal trend in mortality and predictors for mortality among hospital admissions for HRS in the United States. The findings showed a significant improvement in hospital mortality among patients admitted for HRS despite an increase in resource utilization. Multiple predictors for hospital mortality were identified.

Summary: The study investigated gastrointestinal hospitalizations in the United States during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a decrease in hospitalizations with GI diagnoses and procedures in 2020 compared to 2019. However, there was an increase in mortality rate and specific diagnoses including alcoholic liver disease and acute liver failure. These findings are important for future research and resource allocation in GI diseases.

Summary: In this study, we examined the prevalence, resource utilization, and comorbidities of hospitalized patients with Turner syndrome (TS) in the United States. We found that TS patients had higher inpatient morbidity and mortality rates, increased healthcare expenditures, and longer hospital stays compared to non-TS patients. TS patients also had a higher risk of cardiovascular complications, autoimmune diseases, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Summary: As China's aging population continues to grow, the prevalence of mental illness among seniors is increasing steadily. This study aims to reveal the changing trends and characteristics of economic burden among seniors with long-term hospitalization for mental illness and to analyze the influencing factors. The study found that seniors' patients with mental illness treated in specialized hospitals have higher hospitalization costs, and long-term hospitalization increases total hospitalization costs. Age has an impact on hospitalization costs for patients with organic mental disorders. Patients with affective disorders and neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform disorders covered by urban employee medical insurance also have higher hospitalization costs. Patients with severe psychiatric disorders with a 31-day readmission plan, as well as senior patients with somatoform disorders comorbid with other illnesses, incur higher hospitalization costs.

Summary: Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by the accumulation of lipid-rich proteinaceous material in the alveoli. A secondary analysis on the Hospital Cost and Utilization Project's Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) was conducted to better understand the demographics, complication rates, mortality, and healthcare costs of PAP patients hospitalized in the United States from 2012 to 2014. Results showed a male predominance, a mean age in the 40s, an inpatient mortality rate of 5%, and an average admission cost of $29,932.20.

Summary: Migraine care is common among veterans in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with a higher prevalence in women. Men with migraine are more likely to have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnosis, while women with migraine are more likely to report military sexual trauma. Primary care is the most common setting for headache care, but a significant number of veterans seek care in the emergency department. Overweight/obesity, nonheadache pain disorders, and mental health disorders are common comorbidities among veterans with diagnosed migraine.

Summary: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hyperphagia and various medical complications. This study analyzed the hospitalizations of PWS patients in the United States using a national database. The results showed that respiratory conditions, infectious conditions, and digestive conditions were common primary discharge diagnoses for PWS patients. Hospitalizations involving PWS were more likely to have complications such as respiratory failure, septicemia, and intestinal obstruction compared to non-PWS hospitalizations. Obesity was also frequently diagnosed in PWS hospitalizations. These findings highlight the need for improved diagnosis and treatment of PWS complications.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the disparities in the utilization of mental health services among rural and urban populations in China and assess the reimbursement rates for health insurance. The study found that rural residents had lower utilization of mental health services and that health insurance influenced preferences for mental health treatments. Therefore, uniform measures are needed to develop health insurance policies for rural areas.

Summary: PROMIS is a valid measure compared to SRS-22r in terms of convergent validity, and has greater measure of effect in terms of responsiveness, but failed in reliability and internal consistency. Surgeons should consider the lack of reliability and internal consistency (despite validity and responsiveness) of the PROMIS to SRS-22r before replacing the traditional questionnaire with the computer-adaptive testing.

Summary: This retrospective case-control study assessed the risk factors for perioperative myocardial infarction (MI) in elective spine surgery patients and developed a predictive model for MI occurrence. The study found that MI patients had a higher rate of fusion surgeries, surgical site infections, and revisions, as well as longer operative times and higher mortality rates. The predictive model for MI can help in risk stratification of patients and optimize preoperative patient counseling and perioperative care.

Summary: This study compared the clinical utility of two common classification systems for adult spinal deformity in surgical planning, finding that considering both the Roussouly and SRS-Schwab systems may improve patient outcomes. Patients who both matched Roussouly type and improved in Schwab modifiers had superior patient-reported outcomes at 2 years, suggesting that concurrent consideration of both systems may offer utility in establishing optimal realignment goals.

Summary: The impact of not achieving ideal realignment in the global alignment and proportion score in adult spinal deformity correction on clinical outcomes is under-studied. This study found that GAP proportionality does not significantly alter complication rates in ASD patients who meet age-adjusted realignment goals. However, severe global disproportion is associated with higher rates of reoperation, implant failure, rod fracture, and junctional failure in patients with sub-optimal age-adjusted alignment.

Summary: Adjacent segment disease refers to degenerative changes occurring in the vertebral segments adjacent to a previously fused spine, leading to new clinical symptoms such as radiculopathy, myelopathy, or instability. The etiology is multifactorial, involving the natural history of the disease, increased biomechanical stress, clinical factors, intraoperative factors, and malalignment. Nonoperative treatment is preferred, but surgical intervention may be necessary, with decompression and fusion being the mainstay. Further randomized controlled trials are needed to determine the optimal treatment approach, especially with the advancement of minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the shape of thoracic kyphosis (TK) before and after fusion in ASD patients treated with long fusion. The findings showed that 30% of patients developed iatrogenic hyperkyphosis postoperatively, and patients with baseline hypokyphosis were more likely to be corrected to normal TK.
