Heat waves pose serious health threats to human mortality and morbidity in many countries, including Pakistan. There are various factors that contribute towards heat wave induced morbidity and several adaptation measures are at disposal to avoid adverse effects on human health. This research was designed to examine different adaptation measures taken by the respondents and to estimate the determinants of heat wave induced morbidity. The sampling design consisted of primary data collection from 251 respondents in urban and peri-urban areas of Faisalabad, being one of the big cities in Pakistan, using a pre-tested questionnaire. The most common adaptation strategies were identified and an index of adaptation strategies was generated. The determinants of the number of patients in a family suffering from heat waves were estimated using Poisson regression model. The research findings revealed approximately the same adaptation scores of both urban and peri-urban respondents indicating no differences in adaptation level of both groups. The most commonly used adaptation strategies during heat waves included using plenty of water, and juices, increasing the number of baths, using an umbrella, cloth/cap, wearing sunglasses, and using green sheets/chicks in the house. The most important and statistically significant determinants of heat wave induced morbidity were the adaptation to heat waves (captured by adaptation score), urban/peri-urban background, family size, the number of males, and high income. Thus, it was concluded that the adaptation practices have strong health implications in the face of health challenges posed by heat waves. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that the health policies aimed at reducing the health impacts of heat waves may focus on awareness campaigns on available adaptation strategies through different media sources, widening access to health facilities, and extending swimming facilities particularly in urban areas. These strategies are important policy interventions to reduce vulnerability of population to heat waves.

Summary: Despite Bangladesh's significant progress in agricultural production, household food and nutrition insecurity persist, especially in rural areas, affecting women of reproductive age. This study found that a majority of households in northwest rural Bangladesh are mildly and moderately food insecure, with low dietary diversity dominated by grains and dark green leafy vegetables. Additionally, determinants of household food insecurity were identified, including education level of household heads, household size, access to information sources, access to credit support, and perceived impacts of climate change on crop production. The study recommends appropriate interventions to improve food and nutrition security in the study areas.

Status and drivers of households' food security status in climate-sensitive coastal areas of Bangladesh: A comparison between the exposed and interior coasts

Md Sadique Rahman, Farhad Zulfiqar, Hayat Ullah, Sushil K. Himanshu, Avishek Datta

Summary: Farming in coastal areas faces unique challenges due to climate change, which threatens the livelihoods and food security of coastal people. This study compared the food security status and identified the factors influencing households' food security in different coastal regions of Bangladesh. The results showed that economic factors, such as higher farm and non-farm incomes, access to credit, and engagement in homestead gardening, played significant roles in enhancing food security in both interior and exposed coasts. Location-specific sustainable farming practices, non-farm employment opportunities, rice price stabilization, agricultural training, and capital availability are crucial for improving household-level food security in coastal areas.

Summary: Many agricultural cooperatives in Thailand face declining profits due to their failure to engage in agribusiness. This study found that operating capital, the presence of a trading business, and average payback positively influence profit. On the other hand, the number of cooperative members and staff members have a negative impact on profit. Furthermore, the number of members, the presence of a manager, the presence of a cooperative office, and the ability to raise funds significantly increase the likelihood of conducting trading and compilation businesses.

Land surface dynamics and meteorological forcings modulate land surface temperature characteristics

Oluwafemi E. Adeyeri, Akinleye H. Folorunsho, Kayode I. Ayegbusi, Vishal Bobde, Tolulope E. Adeliyi, Christopher E. Ndehedehe, Akintomide A. Akinsanola

Summary: This study examines the impact of land cover, vegetation health, climatic forcings, elevation heat loads, and terrain characteristics on land surface temperature distribution over West Africa. The random forest model performs the best in downscaling predictands. The southern regions consistently exhibit healthy vegetation, while areas with unhealthy vegetation coincide with hot land surface temperature clusters. Positive Normalized Difference Vegetation Index trends in the Sahel highlight rainfall recovery and subsequent greening. Southwest winds cause the upwelling of cold waters, resulting in low land surface temperatures in southern West Africa. Considering LVCET factors is crucial for prioritizing greening initiatives and urban planning.
