Summary: A simple yet powerful method to obtain structural color is the assembly of colloidal spheres, which can be functionalized to exhibit various properties. This study developed a strategy to prepare SiO2 colloid particles embedded with carbon dots, which can be assembled into photonic glasses to display structural color and fluorescence. By incorporating carbon black, the saturation of structural color and fluorescence intensity can be further manipulated. This study provides inspiration for color- and fluorescence-related applications such as sensing, in vivo imaging, LEDs, and anticounterfeiting.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of photoluminescence (PL) in carbon nano dots (CDs) and the enhanced PL performance achieved through nitrogen doping. Fluorophore certification and surface group ascertainment provide a deeper understanding of PL. Nitrogen doping successfully leads to a significant red-shift in emission and enhancement of fluorescence quantum yield. Cellular imaging experiments demonstrate that the nitrogen-doped CDs effectively penetrate cell membranes and stain the cytoplasm and nucleus during cell cultivation.

Summary: Oral infectious diseases and tooth staining are major challenges in dental healthcare. Researchers have developed copper-doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) that can inhibit bacterial adhesion and eradicate biofilms in the oral environment without causing harm to surrounding tissues. Cu-CDs also show excellent antibacterial ability against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, Cu-CDs have a better performance in tooth whitening compared to other alternatives, with minimal damage to enamel and dentin. The biocompatible Cu-CDs have great potential for eliminating oral pathogenic biofilms and promoting oral health.
