Burden of Parkinson's disease in Sicily: a health administrative database study

Calogero Edoardo Cicero, Salvatore Scondotto, Alessandra Vincenza Allotta, Giovanni De Luca, Giuseppe Murolo, Alessandra Nicoletti, Mario Zappia

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of Parkinson's disease in the Sicily region using administrative health data. With a prevalence of 488/100,000 inhabitants, higher rates were observed in men and in the 85-89 age class. The findings suggest that using administrative databases is a feasible strategy to assess the burden of PD.

Executive functioning and serum lipid fractions in Parkinson's disease-a possible sex-effect: the PACOS study

Antonina Luca, Roberto Monastero, Calogero Edoardo Cicero, Roberta Baschi, Giulia Donzuso, Giovanni Mostile, Vincenzo Restivo, Lucia Di Giorgi, Maria Caccamo, Mario Zappia, Alessandra Nicoletti

Summary: The study found that female Parkinson's disease patients had significantly higher levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol than males. Among female patients, there was a positive association between hypertriglyceridemia and FAB score below cutoff, while among male patients, there were negative associations between hypercholesterolemia/high LDL levels and FAB score below cutoff. This suggests a sex-specific different role of lipids in executive functioning.

Turning and Sitting in Early Parkinsonism: Differences Between Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Associated with Parkinsonism and Parkinson's Disease

Giovanni Mostile, Federico Contrafatto, Roberta Terranova, Claudio Terravecchia, Antonina Luca, Martina Sinito, Giulia Donzuso, Calogero E. Cicero, Giorgia Sciacca, Alessandra Nicoletti, Mario Zappia

Summary: This study evaluated the differences in mobility between patients with iNPH-P and PD. The results showed that iNPH-P patients had longer duration and lower speed during turning tasks compared to PD patients. In addition, iNPH-P patients had lower vertical variation in acceleration during the sit-to-stand phase and showed smaller stride length and a longer gait cycle duration during walking. The average angular speed on turning before sitting was identified as the discriminating parameter between the two groups.

Sex and gender differences in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A narrative review

Alessandra Nicoletti, Roberta Baschi, Calogero Edoardo Cicero, Salvatore Iacono, Vincenzina Lo Re, Antonina Luca, Giuseppe Schiro, Roberto Monastero

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are common and exhibit high variability in the general population. The role of sex and gender in the diagnosis and prognosis of NDs has been poorly explored, but increasing evidence suggests their importance. This narrative review summarizes the current knowledge on sex and gender differences in the epidemiology, clinical features, biomarkers, and treatment of AD, PD, and ALS. Understanding the role of sex and gender in these diseases is crucial for developing precision medicine strategies.

Long-Duration Response to Levodopa, Motor Learning, and Neuroplasticity in Early Parkinson's Disease

Giorgia Sciacca, Giovanni Mostile, Ivano Disilvestro, Giulia Donzuso, Alessandra Nicoletti, Mario Zappia

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of long-duration response (LDR) on neuroplasticity parameters in Parkinson's disease patients. The results showed that patients with sustained LDR exhibited significant improvements in neuroplasticity parameters after motor learning, while those without LDR did not show any changes. The conclusion is that in early Parkinson's disease patients, sustained LDR may synergistically facilitate adaptive changes in neuroplasticity in basal ganglia and cortical networks with motor learning.
