Summary: Using firm-level data of companies listed on China's A-share market from 2006 to 2017, this research applies a difference-in-differences (DID) empirical method to test whether the state policy in China used for identifying firms as being high-tech enhances their innovative capabilities. The main findings suggest that the state technology identification policy does improve the total number of patent applications and the number of patent invention applications. Government subsidy plays an important role as a channel through which this policy affects a firm's innovation capabilities. The policy has a more prominent and positive influence on the innovation capabilities of firms located in regions with a higher rate of taxation and relatively more developed products and factor markets.

Summary: This paper aims to explain the causal relationship between accelerated depreciation policy (ADP) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance. Using China's ADP as a quasi natural experiment, the study finds that ADP increases CSR performance by easing financing constraints and improving firm performance. Moreover, the policy effects are more pronounced on firms facing stronger market competition and firms with better corporate governance. These results emphasize the significance of improving marketization to make tax policies effective.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of China's Income Tax Revenue Sharing Reform in 2002 on corporate financial performance. The study finds that after the reform, enterprises taxed by the State Administration of Taxation have a lower effective tax rate compared to those taxed by the Local Administration of Taxation. A 1% reduction in the effective tax rate leads to a 1.7% increase in Return on Asset. The impact is weaker for locally owned state-owned enterprises, large firms, firms with low SA index, and those in less competitive industries.

Summary: The tax incentive for specific productivity-enhancing equipment introduced in 2014 for Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises mitigates financial constraints in upgrading capital. The study finds that while the tax incentive did not increase the average capital investment rate of eligible firms, the firms using the incentive had higher capital investment rates and labor productivity compared to their counterparts. Additionally, financially constrained firms using the incentive showed a greater increase in their capital investment rate. These findings highlight the role of the tax incentive in alleviating financial constraints in capital upgrading.

Summary: This study analyzes the effects of financial subsidies and tax incentives on technological innovation in the integrated circuit industry using data from Chinese companies. The study finds that financial subsidies hinder technological innovation, while tax incentives have a weak promotion effect. Furthermore, industry heterogeneity and regional differences are important factors that affect the effectiveness of policy tools. The research provides empirical evidence and policy reference for optimizing fiscal policies related to the integrated circuit industry in China.

Summary: There is a global concern over the environmental impact of increasing internal combustion engine vehicles, leading to a push for alternative propulsion systems like electric motors. In South Africa, there are challenges in adopting electric vehicles due to unfavorable environment, with residents in Gauteng province identifying high prices as a major barrier. Government policies addressing pricing issues and interventions like purchasing subsidies and charging infrastructure improvements are seen as key in promoting electric vehicle adoption.

Summary: This study examines the assumptions and realities of municipalities relying on tax increment financing (TIF) for funding large-scale projects. By analyzing a case study of a TIF project in Manhattan, the researchers found that fluctuations in property values and the actions of governing bodies can impact the effectiveness of TIF. They propose a framework for analyzing TIF and suggest policy changes to mitigate potential risks and value destruction.

Summary: Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) offer a promising low-emission transport solution to replace fossil-fuel dependent Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs). However, their market diffusion is limited by various barriers. This study statistically analyzes the relationship between 21 socio-demographic, technical, and economic factors and BEV and PHEV market shares in 94 French departments from 2015 to 2019, finding different covariates related to BEV and PHEV sales, and providing policy recommendations for the transition to electric mobility in France.

Summary: This article empirically analyzes the direct and indirect effects of human capital on energy consumption in Algeria and tests the presence of the energy-environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. The results show that human capital indirectly affects energy demand through income and physical capital stock channels, but the direct effect is stronger. The study also finds a monotonic increasing relationship between energy use and real GDP per capita, indicating no evidence of the E-EKC hypothesis. Additionally, physical capital stock per capita, urban population ratio, and real GDP per capita are positively linked to energy use per capita. Thus, investing in education and improving the quality of human capital is a good strategy for Algeria to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment without negatively impacting economic growth.
