Factors Affecting Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Grain Yield of Summer Maize on Smallholder Farms in the North China Plain

The summer maize yields and partial factor productivity of nitrogen (N) fertilizer (PFPN, grain yield per unit N fertilizer) on smallholder farms in China are low, and differ between farms due to complex, sub-optimal management practices. We collected data on management practices and yields from smallholder farms in three major summer maize-producing sites-Laoling, Quzhou and Xushui in the North China Plain (NCP) for two growing seasons, during 2015-2016. Boundary line analysis and a Proc Mixed Model were used to evaluate the contribution of individual factors and their interactions. Summer maize grain yields and PFPN ranged from 6.6 t ha(-1) to 14.2 t ha(-1) and 15.4 kg kg(-1) to 96.1 kg kg(-1), respectively, and averaged 10.5 t ha(-1) and 49.1 kg kg(-1), respectively. The mean total yield gap and PFPN gap were 3.6 t ha(-1) and 43.3 kg kg(-1) in Laoling, 2.2 t ha(-1) and 24.5 kg kg(-1) in Xushui, and 2.8 t ha(-1) and 41.1 kg kg(-1) in Quzhou. A positive correlation was observed between the yield gap and PFPN gap; the PFPN gap could be reduced by 6.0 kg kg(-1) (3.6-6.6 kg kg-I) by reducing the yield gap by 1 t ha(-1). The high yield and high PFPN (HH) fields had a higher plant density and lower N fertilization rate than the low yield and low PFPN (LL) fields. Our results show that multiple management factors caused the yield gap, but the relative contribution of plant density is slightly higher than that of other management practices, such as N input, the sowing date, and potassium fertilizer input. The low PFPN was mainly attributed to an over-application of N fertilizer. To enhance the sustainable production of summer maize, the production gaps should be tackled through programs that guide smallholder farmers on the adoption of optimal management practices.

Summary: Research in global change ecology often relies on global climatic grids, which may not accurately reflect temperature conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface. This study provides global maps of soil temperature at different depths, highlighting the significant differences between soil and air temperature. These maps are valuable for ecological applications, but further improvement in spatiotemporal resolution is needed.

Characteristics of airborne bacterial communities across different PM2.5 levels in Beijing during winter and spring

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of bacterial communities in different seasons and pollution levels in Beijing. In winter, bacterial communities were influenced by relative humidity, wind speed and O-3, while in spring, they were influenced by temperature, NO2, SO2 and CO. The chemical composition, particularly of secondary aerosol particles, had a significant impact on the bacterial community structure of PM2.5. These findings provide a foundation for further research on the environmental and PM2.5 chemical composition controls on the bacterial community and related health risks from air pollution.

Reactive N emissions from cropland and their mitigation in the North China Plain

Summary: Excessive application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer and inefficient N management in the North China Plain cause large reactive N (Nr) losses and pollution. This study tested three improved N management practices and found that appropriate N management can reduce Nr emissions, promote N use efficiency, and have economic benefits, especially through partial substitution of chemical N by organic N and using a urease inhibitor.

The application of machine learning to air pollution research: A bibliometric analysis

Summary: Machine learning is an advanced computer algorithm that simulates the human learning process to solve problems. A bibliometric analysis based on 2962 articles published from 1990 to 2021 revealed the wide application of machine learning in air pollution research. Institutions in China and United States contributed half of all publications, with most research conducted by individual groups. Machine learning has been applied in various aspects, including chemical characterization of pollutants, short-term forecasting, detection improvement, and optimizing emission control.

Crop-specific ammonia volatilization rates and key influencing factors in the upland of China- A data synthesis

Summary: An integrated data analysis of 1302 observations from 236 published articles between 1980 and 2021 was conducted to investigate the NH3 loss potential and its influencing factors in soil-upland crop systems in China. The average NH3 volatilization rates (AVR) for maize, wheat, openfield vegetables, and greenhouse vegetables were estimated as 7.8%, 5.3%, 8.4%, and 1.8%, respectively. The major influencing factors identified were fertilizer placement, meteorological conditions (especially temperature and rainfall), and soil properties (especially soil organic matter). Subsurface nitrogen application showed lower AVR compared to surface application. High nitrogen recovery efficiency and N agronomic efficiency were associated with low AVR. Thus, high nitrogen application rates, inefficient application methods, and the use of loss-prone nitrogen fertilizer types contribute to high AVR in major Chinese croplands.

Summary: Nitrogen is essential for crop growth, but excessive fertilizer use leads to excessive ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions. This study found that reducing fertilizer use and using nitrogen synergists can significantly reduce emissions and improve crop yields. Nitrogen synergists also help to reduce nitrogen loss and greenhouse gas emissions.
