Summary: Research on Melissa officinalis L. has shown that its essential oil has anticonvulsant effects on epilepsy, possibly through mechanisms such as sodium channel blockade. Additionally, it has been found to improve seizure severity, anxiety, depression, and cognitive deficits associated with epilepsy.

Summary: The study examined the activity of Melissa officinalis essential oil in models simulating anxiety-related somatic symptoms and found that it could alleviate anxiety symptoms without inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity. The results suggest that the effects of the essential oil may be related to the modification of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels or muscarinic receptors in the ileum and cardiac tissues.

Summary: Water deficit severely affects plant growth and agriculture. This study found that exogenous NO can alleviate the negative effects of limited water and improve plant growth. NO supplementation increases antioxidant enzyme activity and phenolic compound accumulation, reducing lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness and stability of black cumin, lemon balm, and Aloe vera essences in cosmetic creams. The essences were selected for their beneficial biological activities and were subjected to stability tests at different temperatures. The experiments revealed that the physical and chemical properties of the creams were affected by temperature. Additionally, the study found that the pH value of the herbal cream samples was suitable for skincare. The essence obtained from Aloe vera was also tested and optimized for its effects on the samples.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of subcritical water extraction (SWE) for the recovery of rosmarinic acid (RA) from lemon balm, as a green alternative to conventional hydro-alcoholic extraction. The results showed that SWE was an efficient technology for the extraction of RA and other antioxidants with reduced extraction time and without the use of toxic organic solvents. Furthermore, by modifying SWE conditions, extracts with different purity and content of RA could be obtained.

Summary: In this study, the main genes related to msmarinic acid and terpenoid biosynthesis pathways in Melissa officinalis were detected through transcriptome analysis. A novel Hydroxyphenylpyruvate reductase gene involved in RA biosynthesis was isolated and characterized. A total of 10,062 unigenes out of 37,055 were assigned to 399 KEGG pathways.

Summary: The study found that the yields and qualities of lemon balm produced by the three hydroponic systems (perlite and aeroponic) were similar to those under traditional cultivation conditions. However, soilless cultivation systems increased nitrate content, decreased chlorine mineral content, and led to lower total phenolic acid content and radical scavenging capacity.

Summary: This study evaluated the anxiolytic activity of lemon balm essential oil on anxiety. The results show that lemon balm essential oil has anti-anxiety potential in different experimental settings and can affect multiple neurotransmitter systems. This provides a basis for future mechanistic studies.

Summary: The study found that lemon balm significantly improved anxiety and depression symptoms, particularly in acute cases. However, due to significant heterogeneity between studies and a limited number of trials, further high-quality research is needed to confirm the clinical efficacy of lemon balm.

Summary: Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound with proven health benefits, but its effectiveness is limited when taken orally due to degradation in the digestive tract. This study investigated the stability of RA under intestinal microbiota fermentation. Pure compound and lemon balm extract were used as sources of RA, and commercially available probiotics were used as sources of microorganisms. RA's content decreased significantly in some probiotics, ranging from approximately 20% to total degradation when using the pure compound. The bacterial strain Lactobacillus helveticus was found to be responsible for extensive degradation. RA is more stable in pure samples than in complex extract matrix.

Summary: Lemon balm is commonly consumed as herbal tea, and this study investigated the use of both adult and microgreen lemon balm for tea preparation. Adult lemon balm tea had higher levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity, while microgreen tea had higher mineral content. The mineral content was not significantly affected by the brewing conditions. This study supports using dried microgreens for herbal tea.

Summary: This study compared the performance of artificial neural networks and multiple linear regression models in estimating the phenolic profile of lemon balm enriched sunflower oil. The results showed that the treated oil had increased oxidative stability and phenolic profile, along with enhanced antioxidant activity. Based on the comparison of error rates, root-mean-square errors, and R-2 values, artificial neural networks demonstrated better predictive ability.

Summary: This study evaluated the transfer factor of stable elements from soil to Melissa officinalis and estimated the daily intakes for potentially toxic elements. The results showed that some elements accumulated in the plant exceeded recommended intake levels, but were still lower than the limits established by WHO/FAO.
