Silicon is an essential nutrient for humans, additionally is beneficial for terrestrial plants In plants Si enhances tolerance to different types of stress, in humans, it improves the metabolism and increases the strength of skeletal and connective tissues as well as of the immune system Most of the Si intake of humans come from edible plants creating a double benefit first, because the absorption of Si increases the antioxidants and other phytochemicals in plants, thereby increasing its functional value, and second because the higher concentration of Si in plants increases intake in human consumers Therefore, it is desirable to raise the availability of Si in the human diet through the agronomic management of Si accumulator species, such as corn, wheat, rice, soybeans, and beans But also in such species as tomatoes, carrots, and other vegetables, whose per capita consumption has increased However, there are few systematized recommendations for the application and management of Si fertilizers based on the physicochemical factors that determine their availability, absorption, transport, and deposition in cells and tissues This study presents updated information about edaphic and plant factors, which determine the absorption, transport, and deposition rates in edible organs The information was integrated into an estimated dynamic model that approximates the processes previously mentioned in a model that represents a tomato crop in soil and soilless conditions In the model, on the other hand, was integrated the available information about key environmental factors related to Si absorption and mobilization, such as the temperature, pH, and soil organic matter The output data of the model were compared against information collected in the literature, finding an adequate adjustment The use of the model for educational or technical purposes, including the possibility of extending it to other horticultural crops, can increase the understanding of the agronomic management of Si in plants.

ZnO nanoparticles as potential fertilizer and biostimulant for lettuce

Carlos Alberto Garza-Alonso, Antonio Juarez-Maldonado, Susana Gonzalez-Morales, Marcelino Cabrera-De la Fuente, Gregorio Cadenas-Pliego, America Berenice Morales-Diaz, Libia Iris Trejo-Tellez, Gonzalo Tortella, Adalberto Benavides-Mendoza

Summary: This study evaluated the applications of drench (D) and foliar (F) ZnO nanoparticles (NZnO) compared to ionic Zn2+ (ZnSO4) in lettuce. Results showed that NZnO promoted increases in biomass (14-52%), chlorophylls (32-69%), and antioxidant compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C compared to Zn2+. A better response was found in the plants with foliar applications of NZnO equivalent to 50-75% of the total Zn2+ applied conventionally. These findings demonstrate the potential of NZnO in improving fertilizer efficiency and the quality of lettuce.

Production of Kojic Acid by Aspergillus niger M4 with Different Concentrations of Yeast Extract as a Nitrogen Source

Tomasa Quiterio-Gutierrez, Susana Gonzalez-Morales, Jose Antonio Gonzalez-Fuentes, Adalberto Benavides-Mendoza, Fabian Fernandez-Luqueno, Julia Medrano-Macias, Armando Robledo-Olivo

Summary: The objective of this research was to optimize a culture medium to induce the production of kojic acid by the Aspergillus niger M4 strain in a liquid fermentation process. The culture medium conditions influenced the formation and speed of biomass and the synthesis and yield of kojic acid. The optimum production points were from 72 h and 96 h with 0.552 g/L and 0.510 g/L of kojic acid using 2.5 g/L of yeast extract and with a pH of 5.5.

Seed Priming Based on Iodine and Selenium Influences the Nutraceutical Compounds in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Crop

Fernando Mejia-Ramirez, Adalberto Benavides-Mendoza, Susana Gonzalez-Morales, Antonio Juarez-Maldonado, Francisco Marcelo Lara-Viveros, America Berenice Morales-Diaz, Alvaro Morelos-Moreno

Summary: The use of trace elements in agriculture is gaining importance worldwide as a complement to crop fertilization programs. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of seed priming with KIO3 and Na2SeO3 on the nutraceutical quality of tomatoes. Results showed an increase in antioxidant compounds and phenol and chlorophyll-a contents in leaves with KIO3 treatment. Na2SeO3 treatment increased GSH content and GPX activity in tomato fruits and leaves, but negatively affected the antioxidant capacity of hydrophilic compounds. Seed imbibition with KIO3 and Na2SeO3 presents interesting aspects that enhance the nutraceutical quality of tomatoes.

Data-Driven Adaptive Modelling and Control for a Class of Discrete-Time Robotic Systems Based on a Generalized Jacobian Matrix Initialization

America Berenice Morales-Diaz, Josue Gomez-Casas, Chidentree Treesatayapun, Carlos Rodrigo Muniz-Valdez, Jesus Salvador Galindo-Valdes, Jesus Fernando Martinez-Villafane

Summary: In recent years, there has been advancement in data technology, specifically in robotic systems, where data-driven modelling and control computations have been applied by considering only the input and output signals' relationship. This paper proposes a methodology to initialize a data-driven model using the pseudo-Jacobian matrix algorithm for estimating the model of a mobile manipulator robot. Additionally, a control law based on a novel neuro-fuzzy network is proposed to minimize control errors and avoid chattering phenomenon. Overall stability analysis ensures convergence of estimation and control errors, as well as tuning of control design parameters. Simulation results validate the performance of the data-driven model and control.

UV-A Radiation Stimulates Tolerance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici in Tomato Plants

Yolanda Gonzalez-Garcia, Diego Ivan Escobar-Hernandez, Adalberto Benavides-Mendoza, America Berenice Morales-Diaz, Emilio Olivares-Saenz, Antonio Juarez-Maldonado

Summary: UV-A radiation stimulates plants and can induce benefits through the production of bioactive compounds and secondary metabolites. This study evaluates the ability of UV-A radiation to enhance tolerance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol) in tomato plants. The results show that UV-A radiation decreases Fol severity and prevents its negative effect on tomato plants, while increasing secondary metabolites and photosynthetic pigments.

Influence of four concentrations of Steiner solution on nutrients insoil solution and productivity in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Felicito Ausencio Diaz-Vazquez, Marcelino Cabrera-De la Fuente, Adalberto Benavides-Mendoza, Valentin Robledo-Torres, Antonio Juarez-Maldonado, Alvaro Garcia-Leon, Alberto Sandoval-Rangel

Summary: The hypothesis of this trial is that the concentration of ions measured in the soil solution allows evaluating the efficiency of the nutritional management and its effect on the tomato crop. The experiment aimed to measure the effect of continuous application of four nutrient solution concentrations on the concentration of ions in the soil solution and the response of the tomato crop. The results showed that the concentration of the nutrient solution has a direct relationship with the availability of nutrients, and the concentration of 125% showed the best effect.
