Finite Rings of Odd Order with Few Nilpotent and Idempotent Elements

We investigate finite rings with identity which have few elements of certain types, with particular attention to elements which are either idempotent or nilpotent. We show that in a ring R of odd order, the proportion of each of these types of elements does not exceed vertical bar R vertical bar+1/2.
