Summary: Data on marine litter, especially in third-world countries like South Africa, is limited. A study in Port Elizabeth found that most litter was of local origin, with plastic being the dominant type, particularly food packaging. Although accumulation rates were lower compared to other African cities, local interventions are still needed to reduce litter in Port Elizabeth.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the association between preoperative HbA1c and postoperative infections after intracranial surgery. The results showed that patients with a preoperative HbA1c ≥7.5% had an increased risk of infection in the first week after surgery. This finding has significant implications for clinical decision-making.

Summary: The study proposed a CADx for diagnosing and classifying GI tract diseases, using a novel framework that preprocesses in LAB color space and then fuses LBP or deep learning features. The research revealed that the subspace discriminant classifier achieved an accuracy of 95.02% on the KVASIR dataset, surpassing existing state-of-the-art approaches.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between sleep quality and lack of glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients. The results showed a high prevalence of poor sleep quality and lack of glycemic control in the study population. Poor sleep quality was found to significantly double the risk of lack of glycemic control, even in the presence of other risk factors such as napping, diabetes duration, insulin use, and high diastolic blood pressure.

Summary: A low-cost and low-resource molecular toolkit was developed to detect gastrointestinal nematode infections in goats from rural Malawi. The study found that goats in Malawi were commonly infected with multiple species of gastrointestinal nematodes, and the molecular toolkit was able to predict the species and intensity of the infections.

Summary: The study found that macroscopic and histopathologic findings in the ileum can be used to predict steroid-resistant gastrointestinal aGVHD. These findings suggest that both macroscopic and histopathologic findings in the ileum may be useful predictors of steroid-refractory gastrointestinal aGVHD.

Summary: This study examined the association between glucose metabolism disorders in early adults and physiological and environmental factors, including body size and lifestyle habits. The results showed that poor sleep quality in junior high school was associated with higher HbA1c levels in early adults with higher BMI values. However, no relationship was found between early-adult BMI and HbA1c level.

Summary: Recent discoveries of three human protoparvoviruses, BuV, TuV, and CuV, in diarrheal stool samples have shed light on their association with gastrointestinal symptoms. The prevalence of CuV DNA was found to vary among different patient cohorts, with higher rates in older GE patients in Finland and in children from Latvia and Malawi. Detection of CuV DNA in GE patients without known causal pathogens suggests a potential role in gastrointestinal infections. Additionally, the first observation of CuV DNA in nasopharyngeal aspirates from children with respiratory tract infections highlights the potential broad spectrum of infections caused by protoparvoviruses.

Summary: In patients with vasculitis involving the gastrointestinal tract, more than one third experienced poor outcomes. Factors associated with the poor outcome included PAN subtype, performance status, use of morphine, abdominal guarding, ileus, melena, increased leukocytes, low hemoglobin, and increased CRP. A risk prediction model showed good performance in predicting admission to ICU, emergency surgical procedure, or death.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity, as well as the level of physical activity among vulnerable children from low-income communities in South Africa. The results showed that a significant percentage of children were underweight, overweight, or obese, and only 64% engaged in the recommended amount of physical activity per day. Girls had a higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to boys. It was also found that underweight to normal-weight children were more likely to engage in physical activity than overweight to obese children.

Summary: Compared to the general population, individuals with depression have a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases. It is unclear how cardiorespiratory fitness affects this relationship. This study evaluated differences in cardiovascular risk factors between patients with depression and healthy controls, differences in cardiorespiratory fitness between the two groups, and the association between higher fitness levels and lower cardiovascular risk in both groups.

Summary: This study examined the differences in sustained attention and inhibitory control between patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls, as well as differences between patients with mild, moderate, and severe depression. The results showed that patients with MDD had slower reaction times in both attention and inhibitory control tasks, and younger participants had shorter reaction times. These findings suggest deficits in information processing and higher-order cognitive processes in MDD patients, which may impact in-patient treatment and contribute to the recurrent nature of depression.

Summary: The KaziKidz intervention had short-term effects on physical activity and health in high-risk children, but evidence of its long-term effectiveness, especially among vulnerable populations, is lacking. The study found that after a two-year follow-up, at-risk children showed a decline in physical activity, an increase in BMI, mean arterial pressure, HbA1c, and TC to HDL ratio.

Summary: Appropriate availability of macro- and micronutrients has an important impact on cognitive performance, mood and mental health. This study found that consumption of specific macronutrients is associated with the development of future depressive symptoms in adolescent elite athletes. Further research is needed to validate these findings and explore whether nutrition education and dietary modification can prevent depressive symptoms among adolescent elite athletes.

Summary: The retinal microcirculation is associated with cerebrovascular function, physical fitness, and cognitive function. A study examined the role of physical fitness on executive function development in children and its mediation by microvascular health. The results showed that higher performance on physical fitness tests at baseline was associated with lower reaction times on the Flanker task at follow-up. Furthermore, physical fitness was indirectly related to executive function development through retinal venular diameters. However, the direct impact of physical fitness on reaction time was greater than the indirect impact through retinal venular diameters.

Summary: In this study, a path analysis was conducted to examine the associations among dimensions of emerging adulthood, levels of physical activity, self-control, and procrastination. The results showed that regular physical activity predicted both self-control and irrational procrastination indirectly, while instability and responsibility had direct effects on procrastination. These findings highlight the importance of physical activity in protecting mental health.

Summary: This study investigated the misdiagnosis of leprosy in Brazil, specifically in the State of Mato Grosso. Data from telephone interviews of leprosy patients released from treatment due to misdiagnosis were analyzed. Results showed that most patients were dissatisfied with their treatment and sought reevaluation, with alternative diagnoses including musculoskeletal diseases, skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases, and even being re-diagnosed with leprosy. The study highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between primary care and reference services in complex diagnostic cases.
