Phylogenetic analysis of one child's ZIKV-specific NS5 gene fragment sequencing revealed that the isolated strain belonged to the Asian genotype and clustered closely with sequences previously isolated in the northeast and northern regions of Brazil.

Summary: Genomic and epidemiological surveillance are crucial for identifying viruses that can potentially cross species barriers. A new Alphavirus, named PIRAV, was discovered in Trichoprosopon and Wyeomia mosquitoes in rural South Brazil. In vitro assays showed that PIRAV can replicate and cause cytopathic effects in vertebrate cell lines, with genomic signature analysis revealing compatibility with multiple hosts. Phylogenetic analyses placed PIRAV at the base of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis complex, indicating the emergence of a new arbovirus in South America.

Summary: This study reconstructed the transmission history of yellow fever virus (YFV) in Brazil using phylogenetic and epidemiological models. The results showed the circulation of three distinct lineages and provided evidence of a known spatial corridor for virus transmission. The study highlights the importance of combining genomics with eco-epidemiology for infectious disease surveillance and control.
