Introduction: The increase in the number of cases of microcephaly in Brazil and its association with the Zika virus (ZIKV) is a global public health problem. The International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) model is a powerful tool and extremely relevant in managing disability. Objective: Describe the functioning profile of children with microcephaly associated with ZIKV in two states of northeastern Brazil. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sociodemographic characteristics, head circumference, and other clinical data were collected from medical charts, physical examinations, measuring instruments, and interviews with the children and their parents. The Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brief Common ICF Core Set for cerebral palsy (CP) was used. Each ICF category was assigned a qualifier, which ranged from 0 to 4 (no problem, mild problem, moderate problem, severe problem, complete problem). For environmental factors, 0 represents no barrier and 4 represents complete barrier; +0, no facilitator and +4, complete facilitator. Results: A total of 34 children with microcephaly caused by ZIKV were recruited (18 girls and 16 boys) at four rehabilitation facilities in Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba states, Brazil. The average age of the participants was 21 months, monthly income was approximate to USD 300.00, and head circumference z-scores ranged between 0.92 and -5.51. The functioning profile revealed complete disability in most of the body function categories (b). The activity and participation areas (d) were highly impacted, particularly in mobility-related categories. With respect to environmental factors (e), most of the sample reported a complete facilitator for the immediate family, friends, and health services, systems, and policies, as well as a complete barrier to societal attitudes. Conclusion: This is the first study that describes the functioning profile of children with microcephaly associated with ZIKV, using a tool based on the ICF in Brazil. Our findings reinforce the need to maximize health care and access to information, based on the ICF, for multiprofessional teams, administrators, family members, and children.

Modified Titanium Dioxide as a Potential Visible-Light-Activated Photosensitizer for Bladder Cancer Treatment

Thaiane Robeldo, Lucas S. Ribeiro, Lida Manrique, Andressa Mayumi Kubo, Elson Longo, Emerson Rodrigues Camargo, Ricardo Carneiro Borra

Summary: Low oxygen concentration in the tumor microenvironment is a major obstacle for photodynamic therapy of malignant tumors. Titanium dioxide (Ti(OH)(4)) shows potential as a photosensitizer for bladder cancer treatment due to its ability to produce high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) regardless of oxygen concentrations. In this study, exposure of Ti(OH)(4) to visible light stimulated ROS production and dose-dependently induced necrosis in tumor cells. Ti(OH)(4) also inhibited cell proliferation and migration in low concentrations. Mechanistically, Ti(OH)(4) may initiate type II cell death through autophagic dysfunction mechanisms associated with high ROS production.

Factors Associated with Number of Prenatal Visits in Northeastern Brazil: A Cross-Sectional Study

Gracimary A. Teixeira, Norrara S. O. Holanda, Ingrid G. Azevedo, Julia R. Moura, Jovanka B. L. de Carvalho, Silvana A. Pereira

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the factors associated with the number of prenatal visits among women delivering in a public maternity hospital in northeastern Brazil. The study found that women with less than four prenatal visits were more likely to give birth to low birth weight and preterm infants compared to those with more than four prenatal visits.

Introducing Structural Diversity: Fe2(MoO4)3 Immobilized in Chitosan Films as an Efficient Catalyst for the Selective Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfones

Laura O. Libero, Lara K. Ribeiro, Luis I. Granone, Maria S. Churio, Josiane C. Souza, Valmor R. Mastelaro, Juan Andres, Elson Longo, Lucia H. Mascaro, Marcelo Assis

Summary: This study reports on the immobilization of Fe-2(MoO4)(3) in chitosan films and its effect on the oxidation reaction of sulfide derivatives. The catalyst showed good yields and excellent selectivity, even tolerating oxidatively sensitive functional groups. The key success of the selective oxidation was attributed to the presence of hydroxyl radical, center dot OH, and the Fe3+/Fe2+ Fenton-like process. Additionally, the synergistic effect between Fe-2(MoO4)(3) and chitosan was demonstrated in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones. This work provides a design strategy for efficient catalysts that can be applied to other semiconductors and oxidation processes.

Jesus H. Warnes, Fagner M. de Paula, Natanael C. Costa, Olimpio P. de Sa Neto

Summary: In this research, the quantum coherence theory has been applied to the Jaynes-Cummings model for three types of quenched disorder distribution: uniform, Gaussian, and Cauchy-Lorentz. Under certain conditions, a beat-damping behavior on the dynamics of the 11-norm of coherence has been observed. This phenomenon is more evident for the uniform disorder distribution.

Manganese Defective Clustering: Influence on the Spectroscopic Features of Ceria-Based Nanomaterials

D. C. Amaral, L. S. R. Rocha, L. I. Granone, M. M. Lage, M. S. Churio, M. D. Sanchez, E. Longo, H. M. S. Nascimento, M. Assis, F. Moura, M. A. Ponce

Summary: The influence of manganese modification on the spectroscopic features of manganese-doped CeO2 systems synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal route and their correlation with the presence of O defective structures were verified. Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance studies confirmed the presence of defective clusters formed by dipoles and/or quadrupoles. The number of paramagnetic species was found to be inversely proportional to the doping concentration, resulting in an increase in the Mn2+ signal, likely due to the reduction of Mn3+ species after the interaction with CO. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data showed significant changes in the Ce3+ and Mn2+ configurations with the introduction of manganese modification, suggesting the formation of nonparamagnetic Ce4+ species and the persistence of paramagnetic Mn2+ species.
